The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you could test the latest Hardy Alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. Please note that you may have to make sure all your sound levels are unmuted and turned up as ALSA 1.0.16 mutes some by default. Also, we will keep this report open against the actively developed kernel but against 2.6.20 this will be closed. I am experiencing this problem after upgrading the kernel: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a Linux raven 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Wed May 23 01:46:23 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux My system is an HP compaq nx5000 laptop, using the Intel ICH4 chipset. It has a "mute" button, which is constantly lit with the new kernel, indicating that something is muted. I can't unmute this something, neither with the button nor with any ALSA mixer. Furthermore, the button is lit even if everything is unmuted according to the ALSA mixer. I reinstalled Feisty with the CD images 20070415 (RC Candidate). Now sound is working again, and network too. I have no idea why. I got the network/sound error after updating from 2.6.17-11 to 2.6.20-15 . It is on an Athlon 2400+ box on a MB called ECS K7S5A (V1.1). I booted back to the previous kernel and added a network manager applet to the panel changed Eth0 to lo and in some way it connected to the d-link router. Before it worked to connect for a long time and finally messaged connection working but no router address etc. were recieved. It tried the old kernel from the beta 5 cd and it don't work. With the installation form the beta 5 CD sound had worked for me out of the box.
