Does it happen when starting VLC without any file to open? Does it happen when playing an audio-only media? It looks to me that your X server crashes. 1. It does not happen when playing an audio-only media file. 2. No does not happen when starting VLC without any file to open. 3. It's only happening with Video file. Then it seems like a x server crash issue.
