Thanks for the tips.
It was indeed cruft from my .emacs
I removed the two most likeley candidates and it now works. They were:
- A UTF-8 locale setting
- A font face setting to courier

I don't see this (running a fresh install of Feisty beta), and I agree it
sounds like a font problem.
I do get the Missing charsets warning, though - no practical consequences so
far.
Do you have old cruft in your .emacs or .xemacs/ perhaps? Or in
.Xdefaults or similar (xrdb -q)? Try removing and restarting?
Try with '-fn fixed' (or another font)?
