Public bug reported: I'm using Ubuntu Precise beta 1 with all current updates (amd64).
So far, I was able to switch from unity (3d) to metacity without logging off, with the following command-line : metacity --replace See discussion here : https://answers.launchpad.net/unity- 2d/+question/189486 Since the upgrade of compiz to version 0.9.7.2-0ubuntu1, it does not work any more : unity seems to be automatically relaunched.
