The same thing happens on a computer of my friend, with VIA card since 7.10. I'm sorry if I misslead you, I am not an developer, just a simple user so the explanation will be like me... :) When I upgraded from edgy to festy I expected that the grafic driver to upgrade too, but instead in the xconf was mentioned Device via and the GUI didn't start, maybe because of the wrong driver update. So to make it work I changed xconf with Device vesa and the repeated the process from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome to reinstall VIA driver. Hope this will help you. Thank you!
