It's a bit hard to say as it doesn't have any kind of settings stored or used. Hello, I'm just writing to confirm that I also have this issue. I followed the instructions to confirm that I am running the scope and it I can connect to the server. Still in the Video Lens the only category is My Videos. Okay. After I figured out, that the problem has something to do with the configuration files stored in my home folder (as the lens worked in the guest session!), I deleted the /home/user/.config/dconf/ folder. Obviously, this is not the best/neatest solution because this killed pretty much settings (theme, icon set, background image, unity launcher, keyboard shortcuts and so on), but the lens does work very well now. It seems that the erasure of the dconf(iguration) solved many minor problems on my system as well. Jaynis, please retry the command, without using sudo.
$ /usr/lib/unity-scope-video-remote/unity-scope-video-remote
If it answers:
Failed to own name net.launchpad.scope.RemoteVideos. Bailing out.
It will mean the scope is already running.
Then, visit the adress:
http://videosearch.ubuntu.com/v0/search?test
If you see a long line of results beginning with [{url:
http://videosearch.ubuntu.com/v0
It will mean you can connect to the server.
If any of these tests fail, I would recommend purging and re-installing both
packages with:
$ sudo apt-get purge unity-lens-video unity-scope-video-remote
$ sudo apt-get install unity-lens-video unity-scope-video-remote
Then, log out and log in.
By any chance, do any of you have tested Ubuntu TV a few months ago? It
could be an explanation: the old Ubuntu TV files conflict with the video
lens.

Oh I thought I have to sudo. Without sudo it says Failed to own name
net.launchpad.scope.RemoteVideos. Bailing out.

I havent tested Ubuntu TV or anything else on this system. Its a fresh
(3-day-old) Ubuntu 12.04 installation. However: I have a separate Home-
Partition. Every time I install a new system I keep this home partition
with all its config files, which has often led to problems.

Yep I think i got it. The video lens definitely works on an guest session on my system. So, it seems that anything on my home partition has messed up the video lens configuration. Same problem here. The video lens/scope only shows the My Videos section (or Meine Videos in german as I have the German language pack installed ;) ). upgraded yesterday and no sources other than my videos is listed. The server the lens was querying has suffered from some severe downtime recently, it could be related to it. From today, it's using the production server. Today I got back to my university and now the online sources for the video lens are present. The only thing I can think of is that I'm connected to a network where I get my own external IP address at the university. At home I'm behind a router and have something like 192.168.x.x and the router is the default gateway and DNS goes via the router.
