You can see some of the kernel messages by pressing ALT-F1 (before the crash of course) or, even better, disable usplash and increase the verbosity altogether by deleting QUITE SPLASH from the command line. I tried the Alternative install disk - then some of the crash information was on the screen. All seemed to be concerned with ACPI and a modeprobe.
