I just installed kernel 3.2.0-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP as part of the normal update process. Good news. I now have sound on headphone front socket (and on rear speaker connection too). [BACK TO SQUARE 1] So, having got it all working, the new linux kernel headers arrived. 3.2.0-24-generic #37 upgrade to #38 and now it has all stopped working . Argh... (check with 'uname -r' and 'uname -v') FWIW: people used to the terminal alsa panel may have noticed my confusion with this 'm' command that I was advised to use. I have now worked out that 'm' is 'mute' - Why should setting and cancelling mute work at the CLI but not in the GUI with alsa-config? I have no idea. [SOLUTION / WORK-AROUND] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/385076 Message #6 I found that similar worked for me - At terminal, I ran 'alsamixer'. The Via VT1705 showed by default. At the interface I cursored over to make 'front' highlight in red then pressed 'm' as indicated in the other bug report. The sound control GUI in 'system-settings' , when run simultaneously for testing, interacted with alsamixer immediately. Cards confusingly showed as toggling on and off. Ended up doing this all a few times. NOT tweaking 'Master' in the terminal UI seemed to be the final trick. I was able to get sound working by entering alsamixer in a terminal, arrow right to Independ, then arrow up to toggle the setting from off to on. tried with a new headphones and it didn't work either, but then I tried the connector on the back of the computer and that one is working. Went to look on the bios to see if there is a setting for the front panel, and I can change it from the AC97 value that was there to HD audio. [Bug 985145] Re: no audio on ubuntu 12.04 on an intel hda vt1705
alsa-driver aparently is not a package, so apport-collect didn't work. Also the DKMS driver didin't work.
