I can verify that Johan's workaround works. A little news about this bug: In the live-CD session, I manually removed "ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntustudio" package (via Synaptic) and Ubiquity did its job. So it seems that the Ubiquity Slideshow doesn't run and makes Ubiquity to crash. Hi everyone, It seems that Ubiquity still doesn't work on 32 bits AMD platforms... I try to install Ubuntustudio 12.10 and since the "killing" of the alternate CDs, I MUST use Ubiquity. And during the slideshow, after the first slide Ubiquity crashes just changing to the second slide, also when I manually change to the second slide. I also tried to start with the nomodeset option, with the vga=791 option and some others, with no better results. I followed the page "https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity"; and I did start Ubiquity by the command line with "ubiquity -d" and il finally fails with the "Illegal instruction" error. I have a similar problem on my PC (AMD Duron 1800, 1,5 GB RAM, BIOS from 2003). Maybe it's the same cause, maybe not, I don't know. Can you help me find out? (BTW: this CPU _does_ support PAE, as I checked!) The effect started after the last "Oneiric" / 11.10 kernel upgrade, just a few weeks before "Precise" / 12.04 came out, approx. around March 2012. Since I made this kernel upgrade certain things did stop working: 1) All auto-replace functionality in LibreOffice stopped at once, 2) The presentation of any (!) streaming video content is no longer possible, both in Firefox and Chromium. Instead the video only an empty rectangle appears, no Flash message. Despite this it is still possible to download youtube movies with the respective Add-On, but not to watch on screen. (I tried both Flash and Gnash, no change). 3) Wine doesn't start any more. 4) Google Earth doesn't start any more 5) Stellarium doesn't work Or, maybe, it is my graphics card that will not work with the new kernel: It's a Sapphire Radeon 9000 Pro from ATI. Can all these things have a common cause? Who can give me a hint how to find out? Hello , The crash occurs when a plein installation runs, right after reaching the slideshow. "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again." Yeah, the Permission denied error isn't relevant to that bug, what's is the Illegal Instruction error, though you can't see it as it doesn't show up in any of the logs (yeah, that's a bit annoying :)).
