[Bug 98680] Re: Hibernate causes data loss
Gutsy Tribe-1 + updates 2007-06-18: I have the same problem with my Thinkpad Z61m. After hibernating and waking up sometimes there appears GDM instead of my locked user session. Other times it works as expected. I do not have encrypted partitions. I attach my /var/log/messages: I hibernated on 2007-06-18 and woke it up 2007-06-19. The first wakeup threw me to GDM. ** Attachment added: "output of /var/log/messages while hibernating and waking up" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/8125727/messages-thinkpad-z61m -- Hibernate causes data loss https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/98680 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 98680] Re: Hibernate causes data loss
What do you think of my suggestions? Shouldn't the user get a warning if he tries to hibernate, when it is impossible to recover from hibernation? Could someone at least confirm that this *is* a problem? -- Hibernate causes data loss https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/98680 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 98680] Re: Hibernate causes data loss
Ok. So just to check that I understand this correctly. I need to put resume=/dev/mapper/cswap in my menu.lst. Then I need to change my /etc/crypttab, so that I use a static key file in stead of /dev/urandom. Is this correct? If so, I will try it at once and post the result of the test, so that we can get this bug closed in a hurry :) Question: Why to I need to manually write the resume=/dev/mapper/cswap to menu.lst? Why is this not done automatically during install (or when I enable hibernate or something like that?). Suggestion: May I suggest that the user gets some kind of warning, if she/he is attempting to hibernate and one of these conditions is true: 1: menu.lst does not have an entry with resume=/path/to/swap. 2: swap is encrypted with a random key, thus making it impossible to read the data on it during next boot. 3: other factors that may make it impossible to recover from hibernation. -- Hibernate causes data loss https://launchpad.net/bugs/98680 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 98680] Re: Hibernate causes data loss
Yes you would need to have "resume=/dev/XXX" if you wanted to resume from swap and have your session restored. However, since you are using /dev/urandom for swap your session would still not be restored. The "needs info" status of the bug, in this case, just means we are having a conversation about the bug rather than our actually needing info. -- Hibernate causes data loss https://launchpad.net/bugs/98680 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 98680] Re: Hibernate causes data loss
I have heard that maybe I need to boot with "resume=/dev/XXX", where XXX is my swap partition. Here is my /proc/cmdline: ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (Thu Mar 29 08:28 ) {P:0 H:4896} (~) cat /proc/cmdline root=/dev/mapper/root ro vga=791 -- Hibernate causes data loss https://launchpad.net/bugs/98680 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 98680] Re: Hibernate causes data loss
Brian: You changed the status to "Needs info". What information do you need? Do you think this can have anything to do with my encrypted file systems? Is could the problem be, that I use /dev/urandom as key file for swap? -- Hibernate causes data loss https://launchpad.net/bugs/98680 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Yes, hibernate saves what is in RAM to your swap partition. ** Changed in: Ubuntu Assignee: (unassigned) => Brian Murray Status: Unconfirmed => Needs Info -- Hibernate causes data loss https://launchpad.net/bugs/98680 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
