This also affects i386 bulds too. This also happens to me on Ubuntu 12.10 32bit. For no reason sometimes trackpoint does not work since boot. Trackpoint buttons do not work also. I also own a Thinkpad x121e (AMD E-450) and just for the records: This bug affects me too. It occured on my device with (X)Ubuntu 12.04 from the last Beta until now . Not using automatic login I can observe the UltraNav (trackpoint and buttons) as well as the touchpad not working immediatly in LightDM . But both input devices come to life after a few seconds. Logging in directly without waiting for these devices to show some reaction the touchpad is working in the desktop environment, but UltraNav stays dead. In opposite to what other users reported my device is not only affected at a few boots from many, but on absolutely every (re)boot. Having a look at dmesg (see attachment) I find my touchpad initialized about 4 seconds after startup: [4.070320] psmouse serio4: synaptics: Touchpad model: 1, fw: 8.0, id: 0x1e2b1, caps: 0xd001a3/0x940300/0x123c00 [4.070336] psmouse serio4: synaptics: serio: Synaptics pass-through port at isa0060/serio4/input0 [4.109971] input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as /devices/platform/i8042/serio4/input/input7 But the trackpoint and buttons about 6 seconds later: [ 10.115931] IBM TrackPoint firmware: 0x0e, buttons: 3/3 [ 10.339668] input: TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint as /devices/platform/i8042/serio4/serio5/input/input9 My x121e is has no default configuration with a common harddisk, but was upgraded with a SSD. And this is my favorite guess why this issue occurs everytime the system is booted here. For some reason the great read times of the disk device resp. the speeded up system boot seem to aggravate the effect of this bug. Well, may be quite helpful for reproduction/debugging to know this… Cannot provide much more information by now. I have no time to investigate the bug any further myself or test several newer kernels. My supposition is the Xserver wether detecting the input device or loading its module way to slow for such boot times. Anyways, I hope this at least helps a little bit. This apport-collect is from the newest precise kernel 3.2.0-29 not from quantal or the 3.6 kernel. After 30 boots in the 31. boot the trackpoint not work. Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.4kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags).
