For me this happened only with unity. Using Gnome, it didn't happen so far. I have nearly the same problem with a HP Elitebook 8560w, Nvidia driver, while undocking and docking (after reboot) to the docking station. Difference: Unity freezes, but I can switch to console with STRG+ALT+F1...F6 and reboot there.
