The bug is in mutter and muffin (which is a fork of mutter). I had the same issue with 12.04 and nvidea drivers. I even downloaded the Gnome Live image to report it as upstream bug. I think there was a bug in gnome-screensaver. Hi, I'm affected by this bug, but only when using cinnamon, not unity. Something was done in compiz to prevent this problem but this was not done in muffin/mutter.
