I tried this, and shutter apps failed miserably: See my Discussion
comment at
https://www.linuxuprising.com/2018/10/shutter-removed-from-ubuntu-1810-and.html

As I mentioned in this comment, shutter still works for me.

2021-07-05 Thread John Michael Williams
Hi.

I'm not sure what you mean by "same icon theme": I set up to display
"png-PNG" on both. In both cases, I open a file named
"/home/jwill/Documents/WikiSpecies/Animalia_Plantae_N", where N is 8 for
my online machine (bad) and was 7 for the offline (OK) display.

Interestingly, I can't seem to run shutter as root:
After "sudo su root", my nonroot password, and %shutter, I get
"No protocol specified
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0 at
/snap/shutter/27/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/perl5/5.22/Gtk2.pm line 126."

I tried various fixes, but I can't run shutter as root. I don't know
my "su root" password without "sudo" first. After "sudo su root", if
I run "su root" and then "shutter", I get:
"/root/snap/shutter/27/Desktop was removed, reassigning DESKTOP to homedir
No protocol specified
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0 at
/snap/shutter/27/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/perl5/5.22/Gtk2.pm line 126."

So, I can't run shutter as root, I think, and I have only
"jwill@jwill-Inspiron-3847" as a login that runs shutter.

When I run it as jwill, I get a long message, but it starts.
I am attaching the message (after killing shutter).

I agree that the online machine problem is not originating in
shutter -- it is caused somewhere else but consistently occurs
apparently only when shutter is used.

Is there some way of running shutter in a "sandbox" mode?

Using my ONLINE machine (which shows colorless shutter icons), I
uninstalled shutter and then ran "find / ..." both as me and
as root to find and delete every reference to shutter in the
system. I then installed shutter again -- same problem of
colorless shutter icons.

However, if I viewed my file list with the GNOME "Files" utility,
(GNOME v. 3.36.3-stable) or with Okular, the icons are colored.

So, I have a shutter problem of unknown origin. Do you have any idea
of how I might correct it?

I'm using the Ubuntu default. Attached is my "Settings/About" page.

Incidentally, I just installed Shutter on my OFFLINE machine, which
runs Ubuntu and Windows 7: I get the expected Shutter colored icons
(single violet color) and not the colorless icons (which I sent you)
of my ONLINE Ubuntu machine. Copy of the screenshot also enclosed.

So, my "colorless" problem has something to do with my icon software.
I will try to look into this in the next few days. I think I added
new icons to my online machine a while ago, and they may be causing
the "colorless" problem.

How can I assign an icon theme? I think I have a collection of

Hi.

Have you been able to duplicate the colorless display? If not,
just tell me what to do when you want to test something.

If it isn't too complicated, why not give the user a choice:
A) No colors (as at present) -- fastest
B) Same icons but with individual colors
C) Little preview images replacing colors in the icons.

Yes, assuming that what you call a "generic" icon is what I show in my
posted .png example.

Previously, these were multicolor icons; and, if possible, I'd like to
display them as such (if this is possible), because they were more
identifiable. Is the "generic" appearance my fault, or is it a
design change?
