Actually I was running it from ubuntu's repositories. But as you mentioned, I tryied to get the package directaly from the source and compile it. Guess what, look at this change in 2.8.4: "Elimination of all persistent startup daemons. hpssd has been replaced with hp-systray that loads as a user startup item in the system tray in each user's desktop environment" So yes, it now runs fine. My suggestion: upgrade the package in hardy to this version, and things will probally work smoother than with 2.8.2 that is the current (I was updating every day the distro) one in 8.04.
