Hi Saivann, Thanks for your help. I have tried "Try ubuntu without making changes to your computer The first time I got to a graphical environment and a warning saying 'unable to start the gnome settings daemon', the a suggestion that log out and in again may help. I tried to open a terminal to mount my usb and the screen froze and I had to reboot. I restarted and got to the screen on the enclosed photos which again was frozen with areas of incorrectly drawn pixels. ? graphics problem. Thanks Nick
