Leann: One squashed bug! In Synaptic, I marked the kernel 2.6.27.11 for "re-installation" and then clicked "Apply".
I then re-booted my computer and it booted into 2.6.27.11 just as it should without any incident. Thanks for the suggestion, it was right-on as a a solution to fix my computer.
