Ok, I'm able to reproduce this error: you have 'updatedefaultentry=true' set
in /boot/grub/menu.lst, and you appears to also have 'default' set in
/boot/grub/default. This combination is unsupported (it's meaningless,
really); you should either set updatedefaultentry to false (the default
behavior), or you should use 'grub-set-default' to set a numeric default
boot option.
It is, of course, a bug that update-grub gives this error instead of a more
meaningful message. I think this bug has been reported before; I'll track
down the other report and put it on the TODO list.
