I have this very annoying problem ever since I upgraded Intrepid to Jaunty.
I use Skype a lot being overseas, so this was a major failing of the Jaunty
install for me. Skype worked OK on Intrepid. Using Skype a cpu (Core2Duo)
suffered a quick ramp up to 100% and 20 seconds of delay in outgoing voice
as soon as a Skype call connected. Text worked OK. I tried switching from
gstreamer to xine for system sound, no luck. So i have been keeping a tab
open in the browser to this page for more than a month to watch
 developments, also to
 http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=306381st=40.
At last, maxdata gave me the information I needed. Since Skype did not
work, I had nothing to lose deleting it and reinstalling it. So I deleted
Skype, added the medibuntu repository, used Synaptic Package Manager to
install Skype-static-oss, then tried it out. Problem cured! Skype CPU is
now 20% and sound is fast and clear. Thanks maxdata!
Jaunty is running on a Toshiba Satellite U-205 notebook using Gnome. It is
up to date. Perhaps Skype's reliance on the Qt library used by KDE is a
problem here and including its own library static linked fixes things.

Re: [Bug 362203] Re: Skype high CPU use on 9.04 using pulse (and audio recording/sending delay 5sec)

2009-07-02 Thread Kehan Harman
I tried setting the kernel parameter on a Jaunty install and it _appeared_
to fix the problem but I haven't made any long calls yet (it was midnight
afterall). Will feed back if it doesn't work.

Haven't tried the kernel as I would rather have the ubuntu patches. Oh and
_please_ will somebody fix pulseaudio on ubuntu
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/352732

2009/7/1 Klaus Heinrich Kiwi kl...@klauskiwi.com

As a workaround, please try passing 'nohz=off' as kernel parameter, i.e.,
 in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file:
 ...
 title Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-13-generic
 root(hd0,1)
 kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.28-13-generic root=/dev/mapper/vg00-UbuntuRoot
 ro nohz=off resume=/dev/mapper/vg00-swap
 initrd /initrd.img-2.6.28-13-generic
 quiet
 ...

as another option, try installing the 2.6.30 kernel
(2.6.30-020630-generic)) from the mainline-kernel PPA, and see if the
 problem persists.

You also might wanna combine both options above (use the 2.6.30 kernel
 with 'nohz=off')

I think, it is a very serious one, it is important to fix it.

It's in progress in karmic. There is no simple workaround that also
uses PulseAudio (i.e., requires pulseaudio mainloop changes and linux
changes).

Essentially, it cannot be fixed properly in jaunty before a solution
is found in karmic.

2009-05-27 Thread Adrian Roman
I hate this bug just as much as anybody else, but let's not forget this is a
_bug report_ for _pulse audio_. It's not a forum, not necessarily a
discussion thread, and not using pulse audio is a solution, but not a
workaround.

Having said that, I am also very interested in find out if there's any real
workaround, so if anybody finds one - let us have it.

So, as I understood correctly, you are proposing we all quit using skype
and wait until Karmic Koala is out? It's simply not gonna go. Pulseaudio
breaks skype (and bunch of other apps) and should not be included
(without _ANY_ integration testing it seems) in Ubuntu in the first
place. Yes, I know, Pulse is The Right Thing and offers a bunch of great
features but it breaks applications that many people need in everyday
work. Most people use a very limited subset of functionality that a
sound server offers - primarily software mixing and that can be achieved
with plain ALSA (using dmix). As long as pulseaudio doesn't operate
transparently enough for the legacy apps (yes, most of them broken and
misusing ALSA, but that does change anything) to keep working, it NEEDS
to be excluded from the stable Ubuntu release. So those workarounds are
perfectly valid. On the side, the ONLY reason I choose Ubuntu over
Debian for my laptop/desktop is the usually better support for
'everyday' apps. This bug is breaking that premise.
