all fixed (including lack of touch pad etc) - by re-installing using  
alternative cd.

Thanks for your time - indeed it was a non standard installation, now not  
needed, 9.10 fine!

You appear to still be running Jaunty's kernel (2.6.28) instead of
Karmic's (2.6.31). You'll want to use the latter if you intend to use
Karmic! Most likely the grub configuration (grub.cfg/menu.lst) was not
properly updated.
