Hello.
Haven't got access to the laptop any longer, but I asked its owner to
execute the command, and this is what he came back with.

Hi Alexandre, do you still have this issue?
Can you please try running the command /usr/lib/indicator-sound
/indicator-sound-service and give us the output here?
Thank you

Status in “indicator-sound” package in Ubuntu: New
Bug description:
Binary package hint: indicator-sound
I have erratic behaviour on a freshly installed Ubuntu 10.04 i386 (installed
using alternate ISO, from CD).
The indicator applet initially did not display a sound icon. It had the
following icons:
1. The battery icon (as this is a Fujitsu/Siemens S7020 laptop)
2. The envelope icon (gateway to chat/email/broadcast account)
I installed the pulseaudio-volume-control package (pavucontrol 0.9.9-1).
Didn't seem to make any difference. Logged out of my session, logged back in.
Volume icon was not there.
Then I fiddled with the indicator applet itself, removing it and re-adding it
to the panel, un-locking it and moving it around in the panel. At some point
the sound icon appeared.
indicator-sound 0.2.3-0ubuntu1
Sorry I cannot be certain what exact action made the icon appear. I believe
it should have been there in the first place.
