Ok thanks. New profile up and running - I'll let you know. The problem has occurred 2 - 3 more times on old profile since bug report but I can't see anything special when it happens. No problems with a new profile running for a couple of hours. Switched back to old profile and had one tab closure. Gmail was open, then I opened a blank tab, then I opened googlemaps from gmail tab, then the blank tab disappeared when I tried to select it. Going back to new profile now. Hmm, the first tab closure just happened with the new profile. The only change I made to the profile was to add 2 bookmarks, but certainly no add-ons or plugins..
