Re: [Bug 655458] Re: Ubuntu One Address book slow to load

2010-10-08 Thread Rick Wilke
Rodrigo -

Ran a few more experiments:

On the netbook.

1.Opened Evolution. Clicked on Contacts and started a stopwatch.
When I got the "unable to open database" message (at approximately 27
seconds), I quickly cleared it, clicked on Personal and back to U1.
Every time I got an error, I repeated the process. Got a total of 5
error messages and then, after a total of just over 90 seconds, the
contacts appeared.

2.Knowing that in test 1 the contacts appeared after 90 seconds, I
opened Evolution, clicked Contacts. When error appeared at about 30
seconds I waited another minute. Cleared error, clicked to Personal and
back to U1. Contacts appeared.

Based on the above, I ran test 1 from above on my VBOX. I got the error
at approximately 27 seconds. Immediately cleared, clicked to personal
and back. At 32 seconds the contacts appeared.

Apparently it is taking too long for the couchdb to be converted to the
Evolution contact format and timing out, giving the error message.
However, the process continues. Even if the error is cleared, the
contacts do not appear unless (1) the entire process has completed, (2)
you leave and come back to U1 contacts. Were I running on my dual core
desktop instead of a limited VBOX or on a higher powered laptop, I'd not
see the problem. However, with 781 contacts both systems have problems.

Why I got the other error on VBOX the first time, I do not know, but
I've seen it several times and believe I've seen it on the laptop.

My netbook is an ASUS with a 1.66GHz Atom N450, 1 gig of RAM, and a 250
gig drive. My VBOX is assigned a half-gig of RAM but is running on a
desktop with an AMD 5600+ 2.81GHz dual core processor (it was fast when
I built it!) I suggest that someone test using a large number of
contacts on a small netbook to figure out how to inform the user that it
is indeed working and to prevent the time-out errors. Even better would
be to optimize the code to speed the process.

Thanks for you continuing effort to make all of this work. I really
appreciate it!

So, on your netbook it seems to indeed be loading contacts (or at least
processing some JSON response from the server, so is it working there?
On the VBOX install, it seems you have a problem with gnome-keyring. Is
your keyring ok? (test running seahorse and see if it shows any error)

When I open Evolution, The Ubuntu One Address Book takes a very long
time to load. I sometimes get various errors but it appears that the
biggest problem is that the system times out because it takes too long
to convert the desktopcouchdb file into the Evolution display format. I
am running a netbook and have 770+ entries in my address book.

Error messages include "address book failed to load" and "Address Book
not available." However, restarting Evolution a few times usually
finally gets the address book up.

Rodrigo -

Update re my earlier email today.

1.After getting the error this morning and sending you an email, I
was in a hurry, so I left the computer running and left home. When I
came home, I saw the message and cleared it. Then I clicked on my
Personal Address Book and then back on U1. The U1 address book appeared
with all my contacts.

2. I started VBOX, ran Seahorse. got no errors. Again did the terminal
steps to log what was happening. Opened Evolution, went to Contacts.
Checked terminal and saw the series of JSON responses. Clicked to
Personal Address Book. Clicked back. Got 'unable to open database'.
Cleared message. Clicked back to Personal and back to U1. Contacts
appeared within a few seconds.

As a side note, there are two Desktop Couch user authorization passwords
shown is Seahorse - both computers. Is this correct?

Re: [Bug 655458] Re: Ubuntu One Address book slow to load

2010-10-08 Thread Rick Wilke
I just re-checked the netbook. I left it for half and hour. Had no
contacts showing. Switched to my "Personal" addressbook and back to U1.
After about 15 seconds got "Unable to open Address book." Will check
the VBOX this afternoon. Less than a week ago when synching was back
working, I opened it a couple of times and FINALLY had the addresses
from my netbook show up. Now it cannot open it, so whatever has
happened started in the last couple of days. Not familiar with
seahorse. How do I run it?

If you are getting those errors ("address book failed to load" and
"Address Book not available.") the U1 addressbook is not even being
opened, so it's not a speed thing, it seems. So, can you please do the
following:

* quit evolution
* on  a terminal: killall -9 e-addressbook-factory
* on the same terminal: /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory
* then, start evolution as always and try to open the U1 addressbook
* copy all the output in the terminal and paste it here
