Sorry to clog up this thread, but when I did a reinstall of the nvidia-96 driver, I noticed this error message. Does it provide a clue? I'd say a simpler but still useful thing would be to make sure that if some hardware isn't compatible at the time of release because a proprietary driver is required (and that's the situation here - Unity doesn't work on Nouveau), then a big, red note of that should be made in the "release notes" prompt encouraging for upgrade, so that people can wait until Nvidia or any other vendor provides updated driver. Alternatively, the upgrading script should warn user about such incompatibilities at the start of the process, allowing them to easily cancel.
