Re: [Bug 986724] Re: Lid state changes not detected on Samsung NP900X3B

2012-11-30 Thread Aviram Jenik
Paolo -

would you mind help pin-pointing the solution? I can confirm that the
BIOS update on its own DOES NOT solve the problem (neither kernel
3.6.6-030606-generic nor 3.5.0-19-generic #30-Ubuntu above).

There must be something else besides just the BIOS upgrade and the
reset pin; did you do anything else, for example: log into windows
after the bios upgrade, change a bios settings, installed another
package/driver, etc?

Also, can you confirm your laptop version is 900xB?

BTW: Resetting the battery (using a pin in the hole on the back of the
laptop) temporarily solves the charge/discharge detection; this has
always been the case (with all BIOS versions since I bought the
laptop). The lid detection never worked, though.

didn't do any firmware upgrades before I installed Linux.

Did anyone else confirm the bug is solved on 12.10 ? (dont know if gnome

2012-10-21 Thread Luis Silva
For me, the switch to windows is not an option, but I understand that.

Ohh Well, I just sent an email to samsung US support alerting them to
these issues, It's really a pitty that linux is having this kind of
problems with this incredible laptop.

Hopefully I was not the only one and samsung will take care of this.

What I recommend to you is that, like me, try to alert samsung support,
they already have linux kernel developers and with enough emails maybe
they will look to us, even not being legally obligated to. I sent an
email to 'webhelp...@digitalriver.com' (I know...but at least maybe US
samsung support is better than the one in my country).

It's really a pitty, otherwise ubuntu flies and shines running in this
beautiful machine and I really need ubuntu for my work.
Even with this annoying bug I will continue to use it.

By the way, I'm also looking closely at
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44161
and no luck at the moment.

It seams that it is an ACPI firmware bug, and if so, we can only hope
that samsung will take care of it.

My machine went wrong about an hour ago. It failed to suspend on closing
the lid. However, it did not need a hard reset for well over two weeks,
over numerous suspend /resume cycles and reboots,  which is much better
than I ever had with Ubuntu.

So,  I still have no clue what is going on,  but at least the machine is
usable with OpenSUSE..

suspend. This is normally really annoying, but in this case, it is
quite handy, because both Ubuntu and W7 suspend silently, and on this
computer, which is normally silent in use and has no external LEDs,
there is no way to tell whether or not it has suspended, apart from
pinging it from another machine on the LAN.

So, maybe this muddies the waters. Is the problem solved in the SuSE
kernel, or is it a problem with Ubuntu at a higher level?

 * Lid open is not detected; I have to press the power button to get the
machine to resume. However, I cannot recall any distro *ever* detecting
lid open on any post-APM laptop I have owned, and W7 sometimes fails to,
so I cannot really blame OpenSUSE for this.

I'll give it a try.

While running a 3.5 kernel, I noticed a few ACPI warnings about resource
conflicts with the lpc_ich module. After blacklisting the module and
resetting the laptop (with the pinhole battery disconnect in the
underside), I've been running normally for a few days and still have AC
adapter and battery events reporting and even lid switch detection
(although it's lagged by about 10 seconds).
