[Bug 75017] SRU request: remove /.hidden file
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kubuntu-default-settings Kubuntu Edgy has introduced new feature: by default, all directories in / are hidden, beside /home and /media. Main reason was to hide stuff that would typically not be needed by typical user. This was implemented as part of media:/ simplifications (media:/ was major issue in dapper). More details: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuKDEMedia https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuHiddenFiles During the beta cycles, there was no complaints that this might be an issue (or people were willing to accept this simplification), but after the release of Edgy, when most of existing Kubuntu user base has upgraded, we were faced by several bugs (bug 68719, 67582, 67314) and several heated discussions on IRC and Ubuntu mailing list: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2006-October/010173.html https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2006-October/010191.html https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2006-November/010842.html https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2006-November/010852.html https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2006-November/010498.html https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2006-October/021460.html Note: this also impacts GNOME users with kubuntu-desktop installed as GNOME file dialogs/browser also respect .hidden file. Since we had Celeste Lyn Paul from KDE Usability on UDS MtView, this feature was reviewed again and it was decided that hiding files in / is really not so good idea, as it may confuse current Linux users as well as complicate support for new Linux users. For example when users are asked by bug triage/support/irc to provide some file from /etc or /var/log and they cannot browse there with Konqueror or regular file open dialog (to attach the file). This is why it was decided that the feature should be dropped for Feisty (and is already in Feisty): https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuFeistyDefaultSettingsReview Since we still get new complaints from Edgy users, we have discussed this on Kubuntu meeting on Dec 7 and it was agreed it would make sense to backport this to Edgy. This bug may not be seen immediately as complying with requirements set in StableReleaseUpdates, but we think that it is seen as severe regression by our users (even though that workarounds exists) and complicates support. ** Affects: kubuntu-default-settings (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- SRU request: remove /.hidden file https://launchpad.net/bugs/75017 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

The problem with using Name/GenericName is that (AFAIK) the GNOME Applications menu fails to use the GenericName key, which leaves us in the same non-HIG-compliant state as before, with just 'gxine' as the string in the menu. [Bug 66637] Re: Hibernation stops working after upgrade to edgy - no valid swap signature, try swapon -a
To repeat what was said above- this is not just a problem of hibernation. Effectively, after a dapper-edgy upgrade, the swap partition is lost. Ubuntu does not work well without a swap partition, as it wil grind to a halt if you run more than a few programs at once, even at 256GB RAM. For the unsuspecting user, this bug results in strange halts or freezes, wondering why edgy is much more unstable than its predecessor. This makes the problem critical, and I agree with the poster above that it is puzzling to see so little developer feedback on this bug-report. Some more observations: * Symptoms include free displaying no available swap space and swapon -a failing with no such device * This happens even if the user doesn't mkswap manually; upgrading is quite enough. * This also (obviously) prevents hibernation from working (though trying to hibernate does not, for the most part, fail gracefully). * Trying the fix above (using mkswap and update-initramfs) actually resulted in my root partition being corrupted: the partition could only be mounted ro, and fsck'ing made things worse yet. As to why this happened, I have no idea. It might very well be another unrelated bug. In conclusion, it seems that this is a good candidate for a Edgy point release (if this can be thusly fixed), or at least a remark inside the release notes. -- Hibernation stops working after upgrade to edgy - no valid swap signature, try swapon -a https://launchpad.net/bugs/66637 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 73887] Re: Edgy is slow and can't handle multiple apps well
My take on this is a lot easier. Linux does not work well if you don't give it a swap device, pretty much regardless of the size of your RAM. This explains why you experience stability problems even though you have plenty of memory. Assuming you did have a swap device on dapper, this is most likely a duplicate of #66637. See that bug as to how to make it work again (mkswap your swap device, put the newly generated UUID into the swap slot in /etc/fstab). -- Edgy is slow and can't handle multiple apps well https://launchpad.net/bugs/73887 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

One more thing: I noticed that the UUID put into /etc/fstab was indeed correct - still swapon -a did not work. This seems to imply that there are some incompatibilites between the swap signature used in dapper and edgy, possibly related to hibernation (hence the remarks above about swap space being corrupted). ** Summary changed: - Hibernation stops working after upgrade to edgy - no valid swap signature, try swapon -a + After upgrade from dapper to edgy, swap space is discarded, system fails to hibernate (invalid swap signature) ** Tags added: edgy hibernate regression swap swapon uuid -- After upgrade from dapper to edgy, swap space is discarded, system fails to hibernate (invalid swap signature) https://launchpad.net/bugs/66637 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 62195] Re: edgy update-grub destroys kopt
For me UUID does not work either. It is probably because my kernel does not have an initrd, and cannot decode the gibberish by itself. And no, the Ubuntu kernels are not good enough. If I want a new or updated module I have to compile my own (and only then I install a different kernel - otherwise it is a waste of time). I could rebuild one of the outdated Ubuntu kernels but I still do not know how to make a kernel with an initrd. Without this kopt overwriting nonsense everything worked nicely for me. [Bug 75031] GREP_OPTIONS is evil
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0 If you wish to prevent mysql from starting up, put this in your shell's startup files: export GREP_OPTIONS='-E' Why does this cause problems? Because when you run the init.d files, you get: grep: conflicting matchers specified And then the server doesn't start up. Personally, I think GREP_OPTIONS is evil and am in the process of removing it from my shell start up scripts. This could be a potential security hole since just setting this environment variable can make shell scripts and their like to take the wrong actions. True, it's probably not easily open to malicious usage, but I could craft a script that would behave correctly unless a certain GREP flag was set, at which point it would do the exact opposite that it was expected to do. Ciao! ** Affects: mysql-dfsg-5.0 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Visibility changed to: Public -- GREP_OPTIONS is evil https://launchpad.net/bugs/75031 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 75032] Not able to produce borderless prints
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gimp When attempting to produce a borderless print the result is a print which is borderless top and sides but has a white stripe about 2mm wide at the bottom. This has just happened when I set up a new box with Ubuntu 6.06.1. The image no longer fits neatly into the paper outline in the preview panel on the print window, the overhang being most noticable at the bottom of the image. Although both the version of Gimp on the old box and the new box are the same, 2.2.11, the print windows are different. ** Affects: gimp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Not able to produce borderless prints https://launchpad.net/bugs/75032 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 75028] ospfd starts way too late in the boot process
Public bug reported: When booting into feisty, my desktop is up and network applications (i.e. gaim) are well under way and running before ospfd has populated my routing table. It should not take very long for ospfd to do this so I suspect that quagga/ospfd are being started very late inthe boot sequence. Looking at my process list, I see init was started at 15:00 and ospfd not until 15:03. Somehow quagga and ospfd need to be started much sooner -- as part of networking I'd say. ** Affects: quagga (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- ospfd starts way too late in the boot process https://launchpad.net/bugs/75028 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 75029] dvipdfm emits incorrect page size
Public bug reported: In my LaTeX documents, I specify explicitly the page size. For instance: \usepackage[letterpaper]{geometry} It should get the page size from the dvi file, but in order to get dvipdfm to emit the right page size, I have to provide it explicitly on the command line: dvipdfm -p letter file Note that dvipdf produces the right page size (but with the margins wrong), and pdflatex always produces the correct results. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- dvipdfm emits incorrect page size https://launchpad.net/bugs/75029 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 75027] dvipdf produces incorrect top margin
Public bug reported: I've tried LaTeX documents using various margin packages (geometry, vmargin), and none at all. Consistently, dvipdf shifts the page contents so that the top margin is zero, and the bottom is the sum of what the top and bottom margins should have been. [Bug 75042] [patches] LZMA support, bashism in debian/rules
Public bug reported: I was doing a bit of hacking on flexbackup, and here's two things: (1) debian/rules uses a bashism to match /var/{lib,log} which makes Edgy very upset. I expanded out the expansion manually and now the package builds in Edgy. (2) I implemented lzma compression support, which delivers around 15% better compression than bzip2. This patch is being submitted upstream too. I have tested this extensively with both compression and extraction. ** Affects: flexbackup (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- [patches] LZMA support, bashism in debian/rules https://launchpad.net/bugs/75042 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 75041] /etc/init.d/samba script mislocates *.pid files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba In /etc/init.d/samba the variable PIDDIR, used to locate *.pid files, is set to /var/run/samba. However, sambd and nmbd both place their *.pid files in /var/run and not in /var/run/samba. Thus the command /etc/init.d/samba stop does not work because the start-stop-daemon scripting cannot locate smbd.pid and nmbd.pid in order to kill the necesary processes. Changing PIDDIR=/var/runsamba to PIDDIR=/var/run fixes the problem. ** Affects: samba (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- /etc/init.d/samba script mislocates *.pid files https://launchpad.net/bugs/75041 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
