[Bug 75017] SRU request: remove /.hidden file

2006-12-08 Thread Luka Renko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-default-settings

Kubuntu Edgy has introduced new feature: by default, all directories
in / are hidden, beside /home and /media. Main reason was to hide stuff
that would typically not be needed by typical user. This was implemented
as part of media:/ simplifications (media:/ was major issue in dapper).

More details:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuKDEMedia
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuHiddenFiles

During the beta cycles, there was no complaints that this might be an issue (or
people were willing to accept this simplification), but after the release of
Edgy, when most of existing Kubuntu user base has upgraded, we were faced by
several bugs (bug 68719, 67582, 67314) and several heated discussions on IRC
and Ubuntu mailing list:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2006-October/010173.html
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2006-October/010191.html
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2006-November/010842.html
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2006-November/010852.html
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2006-November/010498.html
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2006-October/021460.html

Note: this also impacts GNOME users with kubuntu-desktop installed as
GNOME file dialogs/browser also respect .hidden file.

Since we had Celeste Lyn Paul from KDE Usability on UDS MtView, this feature
was reviewed again and it was decided that hiding files in / is really not so
good idea, as it may confuse current Linux users as well as complicate support
for new Linux users. For example when users are asked by bug triage/support/irc
to provide some file from /etc or /var/log and they cannot browse there with
Konqueror or regular file open dialog (to attach the file).
This is why it was decided that the feature should be dropped for Feisty (and
is already in Feisty):
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuFeistyDefaultSettingsReview

Since we still get new complaints from Edgy users, we have discussed
this on Kubuntu meeting on Dec 7 and it was agreed it would make sense
to backport this to Edgy. This bug may not be seen immediately as
complying with requirements set in StableReleaseUpdates, but we think
that it is seen as severe regression by our users (even though that
workarounds exists) and complicates support.

[Bug 74979] Re: gxine .desktop file not HIG-compliant

2006-12-08 Thread Phil Bull
The problem with using Name/GenericName is that (AFAIK) the GNOME
Applications menu fails to use the GenericName key, which leaves us in
the same non-HIG-compliant state as before, with just 'gxine' as the
string in the menu.

KDE implements Name/GenericName fine, however.

[Bug 66637] Re: Hibernation stops working after upgrade to edgy - no valid swap signature, try swapon -a

2006-12-08 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
To repeat what was said above- this is not just a problem of
hibernation. Effectively, after a dapper-edgy upgrade, the swap
partition is lost. Ubuntu does not work well without a swap partition,
as it wil grind to a halt if you run more than a few programs at once,
even at 256GB RAM. For the unsuspecting user, this bug results in
strange halts or freezes, wondering why edgy is much more unstable than
its predecessor. This makes the problem critical, and I agree with the
poster above that it is puzzling to see so little developer feedback on
this bug-report.

Some more observations:

* Symptoms include free displaying no available swap space and swapon
-a failing with no such device

* This happens even if the user doesn't mkswap manually; upgrading is
quite enough.

* This also (obviously) prevents hibernation from working (though trying
to hibernate does not, for the most part, fail gracefully).

* Trying the fix above (using mkswap and update-initramfs) actually
resulted in my root partition being corrupted: the partition could only
be mounted ro, and fsck'ing made things worse yet. As to why this
happened, I have no idea. It might very well be another unrelated bug.

In conclusion, it seems that this is a good candidate for a Edgy point
release (if this can be thusly fixed), or at least a remark inside the
release notes.

[Bug 75021] critical missing dependencies (edgy)

2006-12-08 Thread brainsik
Public bug reported:

There are no dependencies on the following packages:

libc6, libfreetype6, libjpeg62, zlib1g

These are all critical to the function of this package. This bug is very
similar to the one i posted about python-psycopg. It's like the dapper
package python2.4-imaging was moved to python-imaging, but the
dependencies weren't set.

Anyway, if one does an aptitude dist-upgrade from dapper to edgy, then
the required C libraries may be uninstalled.

If this is a fresh install of the package, then C libraries may be
missing.

Here is an example error you will get:

File /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/PIL/Image.py, line 35, in __getattr__

[Bug 73887] Re: Edgy is slow and can't handle multiple apps well

2006-12-08 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
My take on this is a lot easier. Linux does not work well if you don't
give it a swap device, pretty much regardless of the size of your RAM.
This explains why you experience stability problems even though you have
plenty of memory.

Assuming you did have a swap device on dapper, this is most likely a
duplicate of #66637. See that bug as to how to make it work again
(mkswap your swap device, put the newly generated UUID into the swap
slot in /etc/fstab).

[Bug 66637] Re: Hibernation stops working after upgrade to edgy - no valid swap signature, try swapon -a

2006-12-08 Thread Paulus Esterhazy
One more thing: I noticed that the UUID put into /etc/fstab was indeed
correct - still swapon -a did not work. This seems to imply that there
are some incompatibilites between the swap signature used in dapper and
edgy, possibly related to hibernation (hence the remarks above about
swap space being corrupted).

[Bug 62195] Re: edgy update-grub destroys kopt

2006-12-08 Thread Michal Suchanek
For me UUID does not work either. It is probably because my kernel does
not have an initrd, and cannot decode the gibberish by itself.

And no, the Ubuntu kernels are not good enough. If I want a new or
updated module I have to compile my own (and only then I install a
different kernel - otherwise it is a waste of time).

I could rebuild one of the outdated Ubuntu kernels but I still do not
know how to make a kernel with an initrd. Without this kopt overwriting
nonsense everything worked nicely for me.

Admittedly one should be able to boot from USB sticks and such if the
UUID thingy worked so it is good option to have. However, It should not
be forced when the option was not so originally, and was even manually
changed back.

[Bug 69036] Re: Enabling Italian as the default language prevents Nautilus desktop from working in Edgy

2006-12-08 Thread Emanuele Vulcano
Unfortunately I had to revert the machine to Dapper and I won't be able
to run Edgy on it for a while.

For your questions:
 - The desktop does work with the default (en) locale.
 - Nautilus works when this happens. It simply opens a window rather than
displaying the desktop. Panels et al. still work.
 - Can't determine the key due to Edgy unavailability (above).

[Bug 75024] Wish - Powermanager improved OSD

2006-12-08 Thread odysseus
Public bug reported:

I find the powermanger OSD pop-up to be too subtle, to the point that I
don't usually notice the low battery warning before shutdown. While the
small gray box in the top corner is fine for plug/unplug events, it is
out of line-of-sight if I'm concentrating on work in the middle of the
screen and the warnings are easily missed.

I would suggest at least a colour coding of the pop-up with orange for
the low battery warning and red for the shutting down notice, which may
make the pop-up more noticable. I would also like the low battery
warning to appear in the middle of the screen where I can't miss it.

[Bug 75026] gnome-app-install needs to install recommends

2006-12-08 Thread Phillip Susi
Public bug reported:

A number of packages require other packages to attain the functionality
that the user expects of them. For this reason they list these packages
in the recommends: header, according to debian policy. The installer
needs to install these packages. Failure to do so currently leaves a
number of packages broken as far as a typical user is installed,
because installing them via gnome-app-install and then trying to use
them results in esoteric error messages due to the missing recommended
packages.

[Bug 75031] GREP_OPTIONS is evil

2006-12-08 Thread Christian Holtje
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0

If you wish to prevent mysql from starting up, put this in your shell's
startup files:

export GREP_OPTIONS='-E'

Why does this cause problems? Because when you run the init.d files, you get:
grep: conflicting matchers specified

And then the server doesn't start up.

Personally, I think GREP_OPTIONS is evil and am in the process of
removing it from my shell start up scripts.

This could be a potential security hole since just setting this
environment variable can make shell scripts and their like to take the
wrong actions. True, it's probably not easily open to malicious usage,
but I could craft a script that would behave correctly unless a certain
GREP flag was set, at which point it would do the exact opposite that it
was expected to do.

Ciao!

[Bug 75032] Not able to produce borderless prints

2006-12-08 Thread Norman Silverstone
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

When attempting to produce a borderless print the result is a print
which is borderless top and sides but has a white stripe about 2mm wide
at the bottom. This has just happened when I set up a new box with
Ubuntu 6.06.1. The image no longer fits neatly into the paper outline in
the preview panel on the print window, the overhang being most noticable
at the bottom of the image. Although both the version of Gimp on the old
box and the new box are the same, 2.2.11, the print windows are
different.

[Bug 75028] ospfd starts way too late in the boot process

2006-12-08 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Public bug reported:

When booting into feisty, my desktop is up and network applications
(i.e. gaim) are well under way and running before ospfd has populated my
routing table. It should not take very long for ospfd to do this so I
suspect that quagga/ospfd are being started very late inthe boot
sequence.

Looking at my process list, I see init was started at 15:00 and ospfd
not until 15:03.

Somehow quagga and ospfd need to be started much sooner -- as part of
networking I'd say.

2006-12-08 Thread Timothy Miller
Public bug reported:

In my LaTeX documents, I specify explicitly the page size. For
instance:

\usepackage[letterpaper]{geometry}

It should get the page size from the dvi file, but in order to get
dvipdfm to emit the right page size, I have to provide it explicitly on
the command line:

dvipdfm -p letter file

Note that dvipdf produces the right page size (but with the margins
wrong), and pdflatex always produces the correct results.

[Bug 75027] dvipdf produces incorrect top margin

2006-12-08 Thread Timothy Miller
Public bug reported:

I've tried LaTeX documents using various margin packages (geometry,
vmargin), and none at all. Consistently, dvipdf shifts the page
contents so that the top margin is zero, and the bottom is the sum of

Fixed in 0.12.1-1ubuntu1. I'm running 0.12.0-0ubuntu1, which looks to

[Bug 75037] mixxx waveform redraw and compiz/beryl

2006-12-08 Thread Emilio Scalise
Public bug reported:

I'm using edgy and edgy's mixxx package.
I have tried mixxx using compiz and beryl on an nvidia card and an intel card

With the nvidia card the display is correct but the cpu usage is very high

With the intel card cpu usage is normal but if I move the windows the waveform

[Bug 75031] Re: GREP_OPTIONS is evil

2006-12-08 Thread Kees Cook
Thanks for the report!

Anyone with the access to start/stop system services generally has a
very large ability to disrupt the operation of the system, so I'm going
to unflag this as a security issue.

Currently sudo will preserve the environment if you can have full privs,
otherwise the environment is cleaned. If you want to force a clean env
at all times, you can add:

Defaults env_reset

to your /etc/sudoers.

[Bug 50314] Re: dvd+rw-mediainfo should assume /dev/dvd

2006-12-08 Thread chantra
Thanks for your report. Your idea might get more attention and have
the possibility of being implemented if you would submit a
specification for this.

You should first check whether it already exists at the Ubuntu specs
page (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+specs) in Launchpad. If
that is the case, feel free to contact the drafter of that spec about
your comments/suggestions. Otherwise you can start writing a spec
following the steps described in

[Bug 75040] [Feisty] Grub won't update menu.lst when you install older kernels.

2006-12-08 Thread Amnon82
Public bug reported:

This is what was in the menu.lst (I cutted out the commented lines):

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.19-7-generic
root(hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.19-7-generic
root=UUID=bd1adc65-feab-4fde-a1c8-58f21c5ef27d ro quiet splash

quiet
savedefault

title Ubuntumemtest86+
root(hd0,0)
kernel /boot/memtest86+.bin
quiet

I had to add this to the menu.lst after I installed nvida-glx manually:

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.19-6-386
root(hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.19-6-386

initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.19-6-386

[Bug 75042] [patches] LZMA support, bashism in debian/rules

2006-12-08 Thread John Dong
Public bug reported:

I was doing a bit of hacking on flexbackup, and here's two things:

(1) debian/rules uses a bashism to match /var/{lib,log} which makes Edgy
very upset. I expanded out the expansion manually and now the package
builds in Edgy.

(2) I implemented lzma compression support, which delivers around 15%
better compression than bzip2. This patch is being submitted upstream
too.

I have tested this extensively with both compression and extraction.

[Bug 75041] /etc/init.d/samba script mislocates *.pid files

2006-12-08 Thread Bytor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

In /etc/init.d/samba the variable PIDDIR, used to locate *.pid files, is
set to /var/run/samba. However, sambd and nmbd both place their *.pid
files in /var/run and not in /var/run/samba. Thus the command
/etc/init.d/samba stop does not work because the start-stop-daemon
scripting cannot locate smbd.pid and nmbd.pid in order to kill the
necesary processes. Changing PIDDIR=/var/runsamba to PIDDIR=/var/run

[Bug 70130] Re: Can't install

2006-12-08 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
Hi,

Just following up on this bug. Will you be able to provide these log
files? (you will have to repeat the install attempt with the same Live
CD to get them) Without the logs we will not be able to follow up this
issue further. Thanks.

[Bug 74621] Re: [Feisty] sun-java5-plugin: update-alternatives: unable to make /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/libjavaplugin.so.dpkg-tmp

2006-12-08 Thread Simon Law
** Summary changed:

- [Feisty]sun-java5-plug fails to install
+ [Feisty] sun-java5-plugin: update-alternatives: unable to make
/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/libjavaplugin.so.dpkg-tmp

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: sun-java5-plugin
+ Version: 1.5.0-10-0ubuntu1

During today's updates there were three sun-java5-* packages (bin jre
and plugin). The sun-java5-plugin package fails to install because it
- depends on iceweasel. well since we are still defaulting to firefox and
- iceweasel is not in repos I don't think it should depend on iceweasel.
+ depends on iceweasel. This was probably introduced by syncing from
+ Debian.
+
+ Setting up sun-java5-plugin (1.5.0-10-0ubuntu1) ...
+ update-alternatives: unable to make
/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/libjavaplugin.so.dpkg-tmp a symlink to
/etc/alternatives/iceweasel-javaplugin.so: No such file or directory
+ dpkg: error processing sun-java5-plugin (--configure):
+ subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
+ Errors were encountered while processing:
+ sun-java5-plugin
