[Bug 395915] Re: when I try to install updates i get a message

2009-07-05 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28

2009-07-05 Thread Theodore Ts'o
We might have a break in this bug. For those people who can reliably
reproduce the problem, are you using ecryptfs, possibly extensively?
Roland Drier has reported a potential lockdep report that might explain
why some of us have had extreme problems reproducing the problem; namely
we might not be using ecryptfs. See:

http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/7/4/93

If so, there is a sample patch which **might*** fix this problem. See:

http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/7/5/79

Also, if people could try building their kernel with
CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING, that would be interesting to see if we get a
lockdep report.

If so, it might be that this bug has been around all along, but it's
something about Ubuntu patches that makes it 100,000 times more likely
to trigger. (In practice, it looks like it should only trigger on a
truncate to a size which is not a multiple of the filesystem blocksize,
not on an unlink --- but maybe there was a bug in the Ubuntu backports
that made this possible to trigger on an unlink. This is only a theory,
but it's the first lockdep report I've gotten that could at least
potentially be related to this problem that to date, only Ubuntu users
have been complaining about, even though at this point we've got a huge
number of Fedora 11 users using ext4 w/o any problems.)

Public bug reported:

this is a wishlist bug; NM currently does not save the wireless/network

permanent solution. I'm thinking of just plopping down some money on the

[Bug 336762] Re: ntfs hard links not working

2009-07-05 Thread Chris Coulson
Ubuntu won't be using the internal FUSE library anytime soon, as there
are already quite a few things on the live CD that use the external
libfuse library.

Is it possible for you to test this with a Karmic live CD, which uses
ntfs-3g 2009.4.4? If it is still an issue with that version, I have a
Karmic build in my PPA which is using the internal FUSE library for you
to test too.

My PPA (and instructions for installing packages from it) can be found
here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~chrisccoulson/+archive/ppa

I only have Karmic builds at the moment. If you require builds for
Jaunty, then I can do those, but you might have to wait a few days for
me to do them.

do you use ifup/ifdown (aka /etc/network/interfaces) to control your

[Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-07-05 Thread svaens
I would like confirmation that this is a work-around rather than a fix,
as something that reduces 3D performance, doesn't sound like moving forward.

Is this something that we put up with for now (to get a reasonably working
desktop) until a real fix comes along?
Or is this considered a workaround?

This is a serious question. I would like to know what is the expectation
of others here, who are testing this patch, so i can get an idea of what
to expect from the future (however far forward that future may be).

[Bug 395321] Re: pygrub broken in xen-3.3 under Ubuntu 9.04

2009-07-05 Thread Evan Broder
vronp: You appear to be running into a configuration issue with Xen; I'm
fairly confident that it's unrelated to this bug.

I've managed to reproduce this on Jaunty. It looks like the exception
you're seeing is actually being raised in an exception handling clause,
so it's squashing the actual error. If you just try to run `import
curses; stdscr=curses.initscr()` in a Python 2.5 shell, you get:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File stdin, line 1, in module
File /usr/lib/python2.5/curses/__init__.py, line 30, in initscr
setupterm(term=_os.environ.get(TERM, unknown),
NameError: global name '_os' is not defined

This appears to be a bug in the python2.5 packaging, and not in Xen.
Specifically, the patch debian/patches/curses-init.dpatch is incomplete.

   Importance: Undecided

** Summary changed:

- pygrub broken in xen-3.3 under Ubuntu 9.04
+ incomplete patch to curses module in python2.5

** Description changed:

- I believe this is an issue with the python 2.5 to 2.6 change and may
- indicate other bugs. Also, pygrub works fine in Ubuntu 8.10 but not at
- all in Ubuntu 9.04 so this is clearly a severe regression and thus

+ The patch debian/patches/curses-init.dpatch introduced in python2.5
+ 2.5.4-1ubuntu4 is incomplete, as it doesn't include two imports that are
+ necessary for the patch to work. This means that curses.initscr() errors

[Bug 111502] Re: network-manager unreliable with multiple APs

2009-07-05 Thread garyo
I'm having a similar issue. I have two APs at home, ober83in2 (the good
one I want it to use, it's wpa-2) and ober83in1 (the bad one I don't
want used). If I'm connected to ober83in2 and suspend the laptop and
resume, network manager auto connects me to ober83in1! Is there a
config file somewhere I need to edit to make sure it tries ober83in2
first? Oddly, I can't find a man page for network manager.

Works fine after initial boot, however, does not respond after
sleep/hibernation. My system is dual boot with Windows Vista Ultimate
and am sending this msg from the Windows OS so I don't have access to
the release info for Ubuntu. It was downloaded from Ubuntu.org late May
2009 and loaded 7/4/09 with all updates downloaded and installed.

[Bug 258778] Re: Firefox 3 in Ubuntu- No text, just lines showing on most web sites e.g. google

2009-07-05 Thread cwilliams
I have the same problem on my Ubuntu Firefox, just lines but no text on many
web sites, like google and cnn.
No fonts were installed recently. The problem occurred immediately after I
installed odvr (olympus driver -- it successfully downloads wav files from my
voice recorder). Thinking maybe this would help: I upgraded to Firefox 3, but
no luck.

I've read over this page a few times. The font problem isn't mine.
Otherwise I'm afraid I do not see instructions for a fix. If you like, I
can install whatever font you like. A few months ago I installed some
ornamental font and Liberation.

Thanks

Re: [Bug 395938] [NEW] cupsd crashes when pam_krb5 is used

I don't think this is a duplicate of bug #257826, as it occurs with

I'll need a backtrace with debugging symbols to try to figure out what's
going on here. Can you rebuild the libpam-krb5 package with
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS set to nostrip?
