[Bug 474102] [NEW] clock applet freezes for up to 2 seconds at a time

2009-11-04 Thread yoda2031
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

I've been using the gnome panel for quite some time, and have recently
noticed that occasionally, the time applet seems to "skip" a few
seconds. On closer inspection, it's not a sync issue because it freezes
in the mean time, so it's not just resyncing every so often and finding
itself a second behind, it is freezing for a second or two and then
picking up the new time. I'm glad it isn't freezing and losing seconds
because of the freeze, but it's quite annoying if I'm trying to loosely
time things such as my pulse and I'm a whole second or even two out.
Heck, it's really just a superficial bug, but could do with being sorted
out.

I'd submit a patch myself, but A) I have more important things to do
(like measure my own pulse and play inordinate amounts of GTA), B) I'm
really not that confident as a developer, C) I can't find the source for
the applet anywhere and D) I don't know how to create patches, although
I presume one uses the "diff" tool to do so...

A bit more information about my system:
Release: UNR 9.10 Karmic (updated pre-release to the beta and run regular
upgrades)
System: ZaReason Netbook with Intel Atom 1.6GHz CPU, 2048MB of RAM and a 16GB
SSD

I believe it also affects my desktop system, but have yet to confirm this; spec
below
Release: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (updated pre-release to the beta and run
regular upgrades)
System: Dell Dimension 9150 with Intel Pentium IV 3.0GHz CPU, 1.25GB of RAM and
a 250GB HDD

Thanks in advance to anyone who provides a patch for this, or some
pointers for me to start writing my own patches (give a man a fish and
all that).

[Bug 474101] [NEW] Wrong encoding and identify type language

2009-11-04 Thread Paulinha
Public bug reported:

I wrote a small java program in gedit and another in bluefish and save it with
utf-8 encoding.
When I do file filename.java or file --mime filename.java i got this:

pauli...@linus:~/Desktop$ file ParseSeparatedData.java
ParseSeparatedData.java: ASCII Java program text, with CRLF line terminators

when i don't include import headers:

pauli...@linus:~/Desktop$ file Test.java
Test.java: ASCII C++ program text

I really need to get this right :| I saw in your forum a similiar bug but for
java5 without solution

[Bug 474107] [NEW] netcat used by VNC uses -q option which is not universally supported

2009-11-04 Thread Mikko Kortelainen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virt-manager

After upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, a remote CentOS 5.4 server with
libvirt is unable to display screen using VNC because the nc (netcat)
command on CentOS does not support the -q option, and the virt-manager
in Karmic tries to use it. Earlier versions of Ubuntu showed the remote
desktop fine without the -q option. Requesting removal if possible. The
same version of netcat is used on Red Hat and CentOS versions 4 and 5
(at least), and possibly on other distributions as well.

The following error message is displayed by virt-manager in debug mode:

2009-11-04 12:35:01,428 (details:1265): Trying console login

This can be fixed by installing a version of nc which recognizes the -q
option on the remote server.

[Bug 474106] [NEW] vlc ignores --deinterlace-mode option while playing DVD

Hello.

  Version table:

I'm trying to play DVD image stored on HDD (VIDEO_TS dir) by VLC.
I have an interlaced DVD image. I'm trying to launch:
vlc --deinterlace-mode=linear VIDEO_TS

Playback starts ok, but with deinterlace switched off. VLC ignores
--deinterlace-mode option.
Also I've tried to set Deinterlace Mode in Video settings. VLC remembers the
setting, but still ignores it.
I need to switch deinterlace mode manually every time I start VLC.

Best regards, Vladimir Podobaev

[Bug 453064] Re: Incorrect Intel firmware file name

2009-11-04 Thread strowger
Adding this symlink fixes things for me:

rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 34 2009-11-04 11:01
/lib/firmware/2.6.31-14-generic/lbm-iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode ->
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode

It may be co-incidence, but without the symlink I was experiencing very
unstabie connections - Thinkpad R500, Karmic amd64 - whereas with it
things are stable. Without the symlink I get logged:

[ 40.952984] iwlagn :03:00.0: firmware: requesting
lbm-iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode
[ 42.076259] iwlagn :03:00.0: lbm-iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode firmware file req

[ 42.290014] iwlagn :03:00.0: Loaded firmware lbm-iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode,
which is deprecated. Please use API v2 instead.

I then have frequent disconnections of the wireless, accompanied by:

iwlagn :03:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x200

As well as numerous Kernel oops'es.

[Without the backports installed I, I experience frequent lockups unless
I disable wireless]

[Bug 121739] Re: terminal wont accept typed input when prompting for password

2009-11-04 Thread DaveM
Micah Cowen said:
'Are you just su-ing to root? If so, did you set up a password for root? Since
sudo is the recommended method for obtaining root privileges, Ubuntu
installations do not set up a root password by default. This is because sudo
prompts for the calling user's password, rather than the user being su'd to
(and then checks that the calling user has appropriate access, as defined by
/etc/sudoers). The su command, on the other hand, asks for the destination
user's password, so if you have not set a password for root (via "sudo passwd
root", for example), a su to root would be guaranteed to fail.'

For new users like me I found out that this means that you type sudo passwd root
Press enter
It will then ask you for your password - you can enter it

It then asks for a new Unix password.

Sorry guys - us beginners need a very simple walk through! - we just
don't have the knowledge base assumed in some of the answers!

Anyway, it works for me now - thanks Micah!

[Bug 474111] [NEW] gtk-update-icon-cache: The generated cache was invalid.

2009-11-04 Thread RUSirius
Public bug reported:

when doing a gtk-update-icon-cache from terminal, it says: The generated cache
was invalid.
i don't know if this is older, but i first realised it after upgrading from
jaunty to karmic, because karmic changed my panel icon back and i wanted to
change it back to my own.

[Bug 471860] Re: gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in ORBit_c_stub_invoke()

2009-11-04 Thread Rafael
I've booted the LiveCD again and again and had errors all the time - X
not start, blank screens, empty desktops... After some time found the
source of problems - the CD reader. In the terminal 1 (press
CONTROL+ALT+F1 during the startup) there always a lot of "SQUASHFS read
error".

I installed the 9.10 using a USB stick and it worked flawlessly.

Please ignore this "error" ;)

Re: [Bug 439163] Re: HVR-1300 HVR-3000 HVR-4000 broken in kernel

2009-11-04 Thread dda...@gmail.com
I just used the http://hg.kewl.org/archive/v4l-dvb-fixes/ on a real system
while I have compiled, installed and built a deb install for the
http://hg.kewl.org/archive/v4l-dvb-fixes/ on a Vboxed system running myth
Karmic but after that I never installed on the system I have at home which
is now running jaunty.

Tonight I will reinstall all for you and test in the way you suggested.

What I have noted after I tried myth 8.04, 9.04 and 9.10 is that now 9.04
stutter a bit while never was before.
Regarding the poor quality I meant that often are present some artefact and
sometime glitches on audio path while there were no stuttering.
At home I have two different TV plugs one of them has bad quality signal.

One word about karmic: the problems I had after I installed the distribution
are so many that I decided to revert to Jaunty.
Note that I have 2 PC at work and 4 at home most of them running windows and
Ubuntu.
Grub is not booting if you decide to have it booting in a partition (3 PC
are having this problem all using OSL2000 as boot manager).
Myth Karmic have no support for PAL on intel 945 (also Jaunty indeed) have
to be patched and finally if you decide to switch off by pushing the power
button it asks for a password (I have no keyboard attached to my HTPC!)...
Anyway I appreciate what you are doing and I will try to support you as much
as possible.

I hope to post the result of tests tomorrow

Cheers

Dario

This bug is still present and nobody has fixed it. Your comments are
misleading. Like I said, users aren't seeing crash reports any more
because Apport is disabled, but the bug is still there.

[Bug 331415] Re: request_firmware() fails on resume from suspend

2009-11-04 Thread Xavier Aragon
Just to add to my comment about e100 driver yesterday, I found
discussion about this problem in the 'Intel Wired Ethernet' project in
SourceForge
(http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2876241&group_id=42302&atid=447449),
and also a fix to the problem in kernel.org git repositories (commit
7e15b0c9991dfe0bf05a2f8fab9154bb7827622e on October 28th).

The fix does not use request_firmware_nowait(), but instead it stores a
copy of the firmware when it is first loaded from userspace (during boot
typically), and then uses this copy when resuming from suspend or
hibernate later. This approach seems feasible since the e100 firmware is
very small, less than 200 bytes. With bigger firmwares it might not be
feasible.

Hoping to see a kernel for Ubuntu Karmic with this fix included.

[Bug 172841] Re: Cannot disable cron from the Services preference pane

2009-11-04 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
The situation is actually more complex than that. If you're still using
Jaunty, this can be checked easily. But in Karmic, you should have
noticed, services-admin is not present. Further, cron is now handled via
an upstart job, which are not supported ATM by services-admin upstream.
So we can't check if the bug is solved, and the situation is likely to
change much in Lucid again.

I'd say that if you have already switched to Karmic, we should keep this
bug as Confirmed until we can check it again.

[Bug 474115] [NEW] kernel BUG at /usr/src/modules/openafs/src/libafs/MODLOAD-2.6.31-14-generic-MP/osi_file.c:87!

2009-11-04 Thread giorgioB77
Public bug reported:

I was trying to open a PDF file with evince, a file which is NOT on my
AFS partition (so it is not like in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/415766), but evince does not open and I
get a kernel crash alert. I cannot run evince at all.

I updated from Ubuntu 9.04, where I had openafs installed, to Ubuntu 9.10.
Consequently I had to do

sudo apt-get install build-essential dialog module-assistant
sudo apt-get install openafs-client openafs-modules-source
sudo module-assistant prepare openafs-modules
sudo module-assistant auto-build openafs-modules
sudo m-a install openafs-modules-source
sudo insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/fs/openafs.ko
sudo /etc/init.d/openafs-client start

to get AFS back working. Since then evince does not work.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: Your system might become unstable now and might need to be
restarted.

[Bug 468589] Re: Unable to shut down or restart on Karmic

2009-11-04 Thread Alex Kallinikos
Btw, someone suggested to me to run on the terminal: sudo gedit /etc/init.d/halt
and add the following line to the top of the halt script: rmmod snd-hda-intel

I tried it and it does work. Not sure if it meshes with anything else though...
Cheers!

[Bug 400130] Re: time-admin does not update time

2009-11-04 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Good for a start. Could you manually set the time to something obviously
wrong, and then enable automatic NTP synchronization, so that you can
check if it works or not. If that's fixed too, we can close this report
and open another one about the synchronize button.

[Bug 46846] Re: Emblems get cut when scaled to a zoom >= 150% (refresh issue)

2009-11-04 Thread OJ
This bug has annoyed me for many years, and it is amazing that it has
not been fixed.

I use symlinks alot, and they get an emblem icon, and this bug makes me
feel that the system is not polished. I can't understand that this is so
difficult to fix? Bugs like this makes users feel that Ubuntu is messy
and buggy in the user interface.

[Bug 474122] [NEW] cannot print PDFs after karmic upgrade

2009-11-04 Thread Malte Helmert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

After upgrading to karmic-koala, I cannot print any PDFs from evince.

Printing appears to proceed properly (there is no error message shown),
but the job gets stuck in the printer queue forever with status changed
to "Held".

The cups error log is attached; it shows that apparently CUPS (or the
printer) doesn't understand PDF. This used to work before the upgrade.
(Shouldn't there be some conversion to PS going on behind the scenes?)

There is not much special about the CUPS setup. The only thing I did was
to enable "Show printers shared by other systems" via
"System/Administration/Printing/Server/Settings...", which found the
printers automatically.

A colleague of mine has the same problem after upgrading to karmic. He
reports that for him, printing PDFs from Acrobat Reader does work (but
not from evince).

[Bug 460969] Re: Cannot install gnome meta package from 9.10 Kubuntu because of unmet dependency

2009-11-04 Thread Tudor Georgescu
This is a confirmation that I have the same bug. I had the problem both
in an 9.04 installation of Kubuntu upgraded to 9.10 as well as in a
fresh Kubuntu 9.10 installation.

I did sudo apt-get update before sudo install gnome. Thinking that it
may help, I wiped the Ubuntu upgraded partition and reinstalled Kubuntu
AMD64 9.10 from the boot CD. Again, when I type:

[code]$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install gnome[/code]

the result is:

  gdm
E: Pakket fast-user-switch-applet heeft geen installeerbare kandidaat[/code]

It says that gdm replaces fast-user-switch applet and that fast-user-

Googling gnome-vfs-obexftp, I found some articles saying that it has
been replaced long ago with gvfs. But, I have gvfs installed and I have
also installed (later) the gdm package. Installing gdm does not help the
problem with installing gnome.

I think that the packages for installing gnome from the KDE or other
environments have broken dependencies, maybe because their refer to
packages which have been replaced with newer packages.

[Bug 449176] Re: Duplicated external media entries (one mounted, one not)

2009-11-04 Thread cwgservices
I had similar problem with two of the four partitions on an external usb
drive. Edited fstab and noted that those two were the only ones that
didn't use 'defaults' so for the moment I changed them to 'defaults' and
the duplicate entries went away. Now I have to check if everything
works. I also have 64-bit Karmic (was Jaunty but did upgrade, which btw
crashed the first time through). The partitions in question are used all
the time; one is my primary data disk, and the other is used for
virtualbox disks.

[Bug 403779] Re: Error Msg: Device added successfuly, but failed to connect

2009-11-04 Thread Nick Hemsley
The dhclient does not want to work either, exactly the same problem
(although I havent checked all the logs etc, but its the same error
message)

Am I correct in assuming that blueman-manager is sending off a dbus msg
to blueman-applet, and it is the result of this failing that is causing
the problem?

If so it's either policykit, or dbus, or the applet not replying for
some reason.

Regardless, thanks for your help, I have a feeling it is perhaps some
minor misconfiguration. I will probably upgrade to karmic soon, where
perhaps it will automagically work.
