2010-06-18 Thread Steve Langasek
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve
Ubuntu.

The error in the log is:

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-23-generic
Running postinst hook script /sbin/update-grub.
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Searching for default file ... found: /boot/grub/default
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ...

Could not find /boot/grub/menu.lst file. Would you like
/boot/grub/menu.lst generated for you? (y/N) n

Not creating /boot/grub/menu.lst as you wish

User postinst hook script [/sbin/update-grub] exited with value 1

Your bug report shows that you installed Ubuntu 10.04, which includes
grub2 by default, but this message indicates that you have uninstalled
grub2 in favor of grub1. To correct this you need to run 'sudo apt-get
install grub-pc' from a terminal.

[Bug 590983] Re: libdvdread4 unable to read encrypted DVDs

2010-06-18 Thread dr4c4n
I am having the same issue as this person, although I've troubleshooted and
fixed part of my problem, however I'm still running into this same issue, and
it's not only on xubuntu 9.04, xubuntu 10.04 or ubuntu 8.04. My steps:
1) a working configuration of originally installed xubuntu 9.04 upgraded fine
to 9.10, upon upgrade to 10.04:
at first the dvd drive was not automounting, or would only automount after a
fresh reboot. Also the drive would randomly unmount, so this was the first
reason watching dvds would not work.
2) tested my dvd drive on another machine running win* 7, and tested on same
machine under xubuntu 9.10, worked fine, tested the same dvd on another machine
worked fine win* 7, and tested on same machine under xubuntu 9.10, tested the
dvd on my other machine running xubuntu 9.04 -> upgraded to 9.10 still works
fine.. :)
3) tested sata cable on the other machine works fine (so now i'm sure it's not
the hardware or the disc)
4) followed instructions of computer manufacturer and installed windows vista
(dvd playback with vlc all fine) ~shudder~ don't want to run vista... so back
to ubuntu 8.04 to try again
5) same problem as above described happens with a fresh install ubuntu 8.04
after following instructions to install proper codecs for watching dvds
6)almost give up.. but not quite
7) install fedora 13 on box, with installation of
libdvdread-4.1.4-0.2.svn1188.fc13.i686 and libdvdcss-1.2.10-1.i386 still same
dvd playback crash issue - will crash at random times see attachment for dmesg
output

error message in fedora 13 using vlc:
main error: ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR is called too late, increasing pts_delay to
300 ms
main error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called

The system i'm trying to install this on is a compaq sr5450f with nvidia
GeForce 7100/nForce 630i chipset

[Bug 112684] Re: F-Spot deletes temporary image files too early when sending mails

2010-06-18 Thread swulf
I downloaded the f-spot package from lucid-proposed this morning. I
tried to send two email messages containing images from Thunderbird; one
containing multiple images, the other just one. In both cases
Thunderbird generated and sent email with no attachments at all.

So it seems not to work.

[Bug 595986] [NEW] Cheese menu: checkmark instead of bullet point

2010-06-18 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

I'm filing this, because bullet points now seem to work in some

'Cheese > Photo/Video/Burst' uses a bullet point but the global menu

[Bug 284085] Re: Ubuntu Live USB creator creates persistent install that is limited in storage size

The 4GB limitation is a maximum file size limitation for FAT32.
Supporting other types of filesystems (NTFS, ext3/ext4) is a subject

[Bug 595807] Re: Please merge ipython 0.10-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-06-18 Thread Bhavani Shankar
Hello Bilal again

Here is my review for ipython diff

1. There is no mention of the patch applied in ubuntu in
debian/changelog

2. There is no need of bumping Standards-Version field in ubuntu as
debian maintainer takes care of it

3. Why are you reverting debian change of removing Ondrej from
uploaders?

4. As I see the patch in ubuntu has been committed upstream version
0.11. So we can wait for a while until debian releases a new upstream
version which can later be synced I think

[Bug 592610] Re: Shared folders (through Samba) when following instructions sometimes does not work correctly

2010-06-18 Thread Garthhh

I'll go through the whole thing from scratch, following instructions as I get
them from the GUI & see where it gets me
I just walked into the other room & sat down at an ol Pentium III pc that is
hooked to my printer. I added Mint9 [last week] to this PC, because it's
easier to use than 10.04 using the graphical interface. I can generally stick
to using software from the manager & synaptic. I update usually within a few
hours of when I notice there is a notifications.
I went to my home folder & right clicked documents, clicked share options
got asked for permission [root I guess], gave it
told I needed other packages & was asked if wanted to install the packages to
do windows shares, clicked install
Samba & lib-something[dependency] installed
I filled in the share popup
the icon now shows an outstretched hand
went to my other computer I don't see any other computers on the network?
I go to network & click through the menus, don't see anything that appears to
be relevant
I go to system[control center in mint] click Personal file sharing & get a
message
"this feature cannot be enabled Because the required packages are not installed
on your system"
I go to help, which says
I should go to startup preferences
I scroll through the list & see that personal file sharing is enabled
at this point I'm at an impass, so
I go have a look at synaptic & type personal file sharing into search, no
results
change to file sharing, 65 results
I scroll through the list & see 9 of them are already installed
File
Gnome-user-share
Giver
Samba Common
Libwclient
Samba Common-bin
Samba Client
Samba
I'll stop here for the time being at least on the PC which has not had a bunch
of stuff installed

at the very least the help file & or on screen prompts should lead you
to successfully sharing 1 folder, it should be a little more difficult
to share the entire home folder just for security sake

It's a shame to be so close & not go the rest of the way with graphical method
of file sharing that doesn't require finding information through searching
forums or the rest of the internet.
this basic task should be described adequately on help or through prompts/error
messages within the process of right clicking a folder.

I understand that when you deal with the intricacies of an operating system on
a day to day basis, it can be difficult to look at things with the eyes of a
newbie
Let me know if there is any way I can help? :)

[Bug 569078] Re: Pidgin perl plugin signals aren't triggered

2010-06-18 Thread Quinn Jensen
I'm convinced the bug is still there, or a new bug just like it has been
introduced. I'm testing with the plugin google_talk_sms.pl from
http://snarfed.org/space/google_talk_sms_pidgin_plugin on lucid. I
tried: 1) the stock 2.6.6 version in lucid, 2) the pidgin 2.7.1 PPA
package from pidgin.im, and 3) a fresh build from the mtn repository (as
of 6/17/2010). Only when I reverted to 2.6.5 (also from mtn source) did
the plugin start to work again.

[Bug 533394] Re: Evince displays some summation symbols incorrectly in pdfs

Okay, mine are those

evince 2.30.1-0ubuntu3
poppler-data 0.4.0-2
libcairo2 1.8.10-2ubuntu1
libpoppler5 0.12.4-0ubuntu4

Which all seems to be the same. I also rebooted, and things are still
wrong. 32 bit system too.

Which I have just noticed (I didn't tested it until now) is that this
bug happens exactly the same way in Okular (version 0.10.2), but not in
xpdf (3.0.2).

[Bug 577763] Re: ureadahead slows down boot on cheap SSDs (e.g. EeePC 900 SSD)

2010-06-18 Thread Phillip Susi
** Changed in: ureadahead (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Medium => Wishlist

** Changed in: ureadahead (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Triaged

** Summary changed:

- ureadahead slows down boot on cheap SSDs (e.g. EeePC 900 SSD)
+ ureadahead should have config option to disable or force ssd/hdd mode

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: ureadahead
-
- Description of the problem:
- Using ureadahead in hdd mode on an SSD can slow down boot (at least on
cheap/first-generation SSDs). As some SSDs lie and don't tell the kernel about
their non-rotational properties this means that by default ureadahead causes a
slower boot on them.
-
- Steps to reproduce:
- 1. Install Ubuntu 10.04 on SSD EeePC 900 SSD's second "disk". Ensure that
autologin is set up. Boot the system.
- 2. Install bootchart .
- 3. Run
- /usr/bin/sudo rm /var/lib/ureadahead/pack
- 4. Reboot.
- 5. Wait for bootchart to write out information to /var/log/bootchart/ .
- 6. Reboot.
- 7. Compare the bootcharts.
-
- Expected results:
- The bootchart created after step 6 to show the boot took the same or shorter
amount of time to the bootchart created after step 4.
-
- Actual results:
- Step 6's bootchart shows booting took longer than in step 4 (i.e. after
profiling the boot became slower).
-
- How reproducible is the problem?
- It is reproducible every time.
-
- Version information:
- EeePC 900 SSD
- Ubuntu 10.04
- ureadahead 0.100.0-4.1
-
- ProblemType: Bug
- DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04

ureadahead:/var/lib/ureadahead/pack: Permission denied
- ProcEnviron:

- SourcePackage: ureadahead
+ Some cheap/old SSDs fail to report their non rotational nature to the
+ kernel. This results in ureadahead treating them as a rotational disk,
+ which can actually cause slower boot times than not using ureadahead at
+ all. There should be a config option to allow affected users to correct
+ this by either forcing ureadahead to ssd mode, or disabling it entirely.
+ Preferably this should be in /etc/default and/or configurable via
+ debconf so a simple dpkg-reconfigure will suffice.

[Bug 567219] Re: After last updates evince become very slow to open PDF documents

2010-06-18 Thread Andreas Jonsson
I've had this same problem for at least several weeks. In addition,
evince is very slow to close. If I click the "close" window button it
takes a good several seconds, sometimes more than 10s, for the window to
close. Often that meas that a warning pop-up appears saying that evince
is "unresponsive. However, if I just wait a few more seconds evince
always tend close eventually.

As mentioned above, the startup and close slowness seems intermittent.
It sometimes occurs, sometimes not, even on the same document.

CPU usage seems unaffected during these mini-freezes.

[Bug 595493] Re: OpenOffice Base crash

2010-06-18 Thread Chris Cheney
[This is an automatic notification.]

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you test
if it still occurs on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect -p openoffice.org-core 595493

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib
package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to
give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it
at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding
information to your bug report.

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 595493 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug openoffice.org-core

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'
or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/595493

Please do not set bugs back to 'New'.

[Bug 523241] Re: mouse motion_acceleration key

2010-06-18 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 96731] Re: MAKEDEV does not make hard disk devices in Unix Cross Install

2010-06-18 Thread Colin Watson
Please don't close bugs just because they refer to a version of Ubuntu
that's no longer supported. I'm reopening it on principle.

The current documentation refers to MAKEDEV, which was in fact part of
the original reporter's request; this was added in hardy:

revno: 389.1.2447
committer: fjp
timestamp: Sun 2007-10-21 13:22:07 +
message:
Updates to appendix on chroot installs:
  - add disclaimer: the appendix only covers the basic steps needed to install
a system
  - add a section with some basic instructions about creating device files
  - add an 'initrd=' line to the example lilo.conf

Thanks to Igor Stirbu for noting the issue with missing device files
and grub installation.

I think this is actually probably adequate to close the bug. I know
that often bind-mounting is more suitable, but it's not absolutely
necessary and running MAKEDEV is sufficient to get something basic going
with minimal fuss. Phillip, perhaps the point about recommending mount
--bind should be a separate bug, and this one should be closed, but as
Fix Released rather than as Invalid?

** Changed in: installation-guide (Ubuntu)

[Bug 595923] Re: "Sound volume down" key launches GCalc

2010-06-18 Thread Stéphane Maniaci
Okay so I've been doing a few experiments with the System → Preferences
→ Keyboard shortcut menu.

* Launch a calculator : XF86Calculator
* Raise down volumne : XF86AudioLowerVolume

Now if I remove the calculator shortcut, it's not launched anymore when
I press Fn + Volume down, but volume is still lowered (which means that
XF86AudioLowerVolume is emitted). But if I change the "Lower volume"
shortcut and press my volume down combo again, it's set to
XF86Calculator. My guess would be that my Fn + Volume down combo
triggers both Calculator and AudioLowerVolume signals, in that order.

[Bug 291508] Re: xchat-gnome doesn't authenticate me to NICKSERV

2010-06-18 Thread Phillip Susi
It sounds like the problem is that you were using a server that does not
support the NICKSERV command. Use of this command is intentional since
it is more secure than /msg, and as Denis mentioned, you can override
and use /msg if you really wish to. Since this doesn't seem to be a
bug, I am closing this report.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 570828 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570828

If you're not using Ubuntu Studio, you have NetworkManager, else you can
install it, or wait for the tab to come back (hopefully). The decision
was made by developers that didn't know Studio wasn't installing
NetworkManager, and nobody complained until the release was very close.
Anyway, see the duplicate.
