[Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled

2010-07-15 Thread Jan-Philipp Litza
Well, I was about to rant half an hour ago about people complaining here
without understanding the issue, but Richard clearly explained the issue
- thanks for that.

As for other ditros, I just booted my Arch Linux I had installed some
time ago to test this. The older powertop version 1.11 shows the wakeups
as coming from hrtimer_start_range_ns (tick_sched_timer) instead of
[kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick, but has exactly the same
numbers as the newer powertop 1.12. Arch was running 2.6.34-ARCH, my
Ubuntu is running 2.6.32-24 as well as 2.6.34.1, and the figures are
identical, so NO, switching the distro doesn't help!

I'll rework the description in a moment to better describe the cause of
the problem, list possible workarounds (namely downgrading to 2.6.31 or
upgrading to -tip/Brian's ppa) and linking in the lkml threads.

[Bug 424021] Re: Popup messages sometimes appears on the top when the applet is on the bottom.

2010-07-15 Thread EagleScreen
Hello, I am very sorry by replying too late.
This is still reproducible in Lucid, with checkgmail -update recently run (now
in checkgmail v1.14pre-svn).
To have the single panel, you must move the desired Gnome widgets to one single
panel, by unlocking and dragging them, then you delete the panel in the top of
screen.
You can also change the position of the top panel to bottom in Properties -
Orientation (see the new screenshot).
Unfortunately I haven't found a pattern to reproduce always the bug, but it
happens sometimes.
Thanks you very much.

[Bug 605930] [NEW] joe's -guess-indent option should make use of vi headers such as vim: expandtab sw=4 ts=4 sts=4:

2010-07-15 Thread Sam SammyTheSnake Penny
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: joe

In the joerc file(s) there is an option to specify -guess-indent which
will attempt (with varying success) to guess what indent style should be
used while editing a file.

If there is a vi header specifying a particular indent style for the
file, that style should be respected, as it is more correct than any
guess based only on the contents of the body of the file (especially if
the file has been edited by those who don't understand the difference
between tabs and spaces!)

When editing a php file with the header vim: expandtab sw=4 ts=4
sts=4: which specifies 4-space indents, joe incorrectly guesses a two-
space indent, which is in the right ballpark, but still sadly wrong.

[Bug 602255] Re: no keyboard input on plymouth SSL password prompt

2010-07-15 Thread David Sugar
Related to this issue is that, post boot, if one starts an upstart job
(service xxx start) for a daemon that requires a password for a private
key, the i/o of the daemon is of course inherited from upstart itself,
and hence the user never receives the prompt, at least not from where he
starting the job (such as for example from a ssh login). I do not
suggest a solution for this, I am just noting that there is an
additional scenario where this can be problematic.

[Bug 531822] Re: Does not have specific color for the message with my name

2010-07-15 Thread iTorrey
There is no %myname% type tag however this could be done via a
textsearch of the incoming message using javascript.

Something like incomingTextVar.search(/myName/i) should find it. However
there's no way to set what YOUR name is, until you send a message (at
least in Adium that is the case) (see the vars available and when they
are evaluated at http://trac.adium.im/wiki/CreatingMessageStyles) so,
yes, it's possible to do this with the theme, would I recommend it? No.
It would be a lot of work for something that should be handled by
Empathy and passed down to the theme.

[Bug 556433] Re: [Acer Aspire One A110] fan control issues

2010-07-15 Thread Stefan Bader
I today tried to verify this on my Acer Aspire One (A110, BIOS version

it here. Even on lower temperatures. As there do not seem to be any
other people affected by this I can only assume this is a very specific
and very special hardware issue. And as such it cannot be a change that
can be made on the whole.

[Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled

2010-07-15 Thread Jan-Philipp Litza
** Description changed:

- powertop reports above 70 wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load
balancing tick task, and above 200 when there's any little load, running on a
Core 2 Duo processor (T6500) with a single core enabled (multicore disabled in
BIOS).
- Will still try noapic, nolapic, maxcpus and nosmp in the boot parameters and
reproduce it with the mainline kernel.
+ powertop reports many wakes per second (quantity depending on system)
+ in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick task, rising with little
+ load, on many kinds of multi-core (?) systems (original report was on a
+ Core 2 Duo processor (T6500) with a single core enabled (multicore
+ disabled in BIOS)).
+
+ Cause of the problem:
+ With kernel 2.6.32, there came a patch to the scheduler that introduced this
problem (that was backported to some other versions as well). Even though this
problem occurred first in Lucid, it is NOT specific to Lucid or Ubuntu at all
(Debian bug report at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=521944,
reproducable in Arch Linux as well). Work is ongoing to get things straight in
kernel, but it will take a long time until this reaches Ubuntu (see
http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/7/6/172).
+
+ Workarounds that DO NOT work (may improve situation but not solve it):
+ - maxcpus=1
+ - noapic
+ - nosmp
+ - nolapic
+ - use mainline kernel
+
+ Workarounds that DO (probably) work:
+ - tip version of kernel
(git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/linux-2.6-tip.git, from
http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/7/8/75)
+ - use maverick's kernel with applied patches
(https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/power, from comment #80)

[Bug 542755] Re: pdfshuffler does not recognize all PDF files in directory

2010-07-15 Thread Marcel Stimberg
Ok, I have to admit you're right. I was under the impression that pdfshuffler's
behaviour was the standard one, i.e. all or at least most file dialogues filter
only on the extension and only offer the all files option to get other files.
But I was wrong, the behaviour you expect is indeed the standard one. Also my
comment on speed was not really fitting: In my case (folder full of PDFs with
correct extension) it won't make any speed difference, it would only rely on
the slow detection if the file has no extension.
The only thing that would remain is point 1) from your description but this
would really be standard behaviour, e.g. eog would list a file with .jpeg
extension regardless whether it really is an image or not.

To conclude, this issue is an upstream bug, I'll report it in the upstream bug
tracker. The patch is actually trivial, in the /usr/bin/pdfshuffler file,
replace the line
 filter_pdf.add_pattern('*.pdf')
with
 filter_pdf.add_mime_type('application/pdf')
(Note that whitespace is important for python, i.e. you have to have the same
indentation as before).

Sorry for my negative earlier response, I learned something new today ;)

[Bug 604717] Re: Please convert init script to upstart

Should the dh_installinit really be marked upstart only? I am
thinking more about merging back to Debian or even backporting where
upstart may not be in use. Otherwise I think this patch looks fine, and
I may try a test build to verify it. I happen to agree ntp should
migrate to upstart.

[Bug 601709] Re: Laptop goes to sleep right after plugging/unplugging power cord

2010-07-15 Thread urbandk
The problem seems linked to the lid close behavior. Unplugging the
laptop or plugging it in seems to trigger a lid close. I've changed the
lid close behavior to blank screen in the power manager, so now when I
unplug or plug in, the screen goes blank, but I can brink it back before
it locks up. I also have a 700m, and this issue has always been a
problem with every Ubuntu release...

when I reported the bug (needed networking to do the bug report), but
the problem is with -8.

[Bug 581947] Re: amd64 lockups in ubuntu and kubuntu 10.04

2010-07-15 Thread dialallama
Just an update on my trials. I've done a fresh install of karmic on my
AMD athlon XP. The weird thing is that I NEVER had problems with karmic
until lucid came out. Then both lucid and karmic started crashing in the
same way. I thought that it might be related to an updated kernel or
something, but the fresh install of karmic from the LiveCD is crashing
too (no updates installed) - however, I did install the proprietry
NVidia driver (because flash video is unviewable without it). This makes
me suspect the latest video driver (which would presumably be the same
in both karmic and lucid). HOWEVER, my other computer is an intel dual
core with ATI graphics, and this has suffered from the same problems
since the lucid release. My latest run-down is as follows.

Types of crash:
1. Frequent crashes when flash running (video freezes with sound repeating 1
sec loop)
2. Less frequent crashes without flash running - no obvious cause
3. In all cases the system is completely frozen - no mouse, no keyboard, no
ssh, no sysreq, no log errors (my mouse and keyboard are PS/2)
4. Sometimes the caps lock and scroll lock lights flash
5. Sometimes the system goes to ubuntu flash screen, as if it is trying to shut
down.

Things tried:
1. Disabled compiz - possibly some improvement
2. Non proprietry drivers - still freezing but seemed less frequent
3. One system is wired network - so cant be wireless drivers
4. Playing dvds doesnt cause as frequent crashes as flash

My conclusions:
1. It is hard to see how this could be graphics driver related because it
happens with different cards
2. It cant be processor related - or related to multicore / governor speeds etc
- because it happens on an old XP
3. Flash definately makes it worse but is not exclusively the problem
4. I dont think its related to newer kernels because it is happening on a fresh
install of karmic which never used to crash

[Bug 548747] Re: Printing to a Lexmark network E120N is very slow

2010-07-15 Thread Jørgen Tellnes
I have the same problem. When the printer is this slow, it is
practically useless. I changed the printer settings to use the attached
ppd file instead (found here:
http://www.murrayc.com/blog/permalink/2007/01/10/new-printer-lexmark-
e120n/#comment-12556), and that both fixes the slowness as well as makes
printed graphics look a lot better.

I can now print a form containing a barcode, and the lines in the
barcode stays perfectly sharp and legible. With the default
(foomatic/pxlmono), the barcode is full of jagged edges and blurriness.

[Bug 591896] Re: various user interface issues

Thanks. I've raised these upstream at

I've removed point 2 as you say it's fixed already.

It is a real shame scientific mode is being removed :( More useful
than the financial functions for me.

Thanks.

[Bug 586369] Re: (yelp:6871): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_toolbar_insert: assertion `GTK_IS_TOOL_ITEM (item)' failed

2010-07-15 Thread heartsmagic
I can reproduce this bug on current Maverick. The error is the same:
Segmentation fault. And in the crash file which is in /var/crash i
can't see any useful info about the error. I am adding the file as
attachment. Also, I tried to get a backtrce via gdb, but i can't
reproduce the error there. Yelp is just trying to load itself but can't.
Without using gdm it is tryig to load itself and crashes.

Also, i am from Ubuntu-tr Loco Team and one of our users report that
issue there. Now, I can see the owner of this report uses Ubuntu with
Turkish locale: LANG=tr_TR.utf8. So is this could be related with
locale?

I tried to open yelp as:
LC_ALL=C yelp
but no luck. It crashes again.

[Bug 462608] Re: Compaq Presario CQ50 wireless button not working

2010-07-15 Thread Teej
When it was working, for me at least, the light in the button was blipping
between blue and orange as a sign of network activity, but the same
light-button for wifi on/off function doesn't do anything. I think there is a
hardware bug in either the button or the AR5007 wifi adapter, since there are
similar problems with the wifi card and connection issues with HP's own
software for this wifi card. It is reported in the meta bug number 461419.
Until that bug has been rectified, I cannot use my wireless card, so this bug
report is pretty much dependant on the fixing of bug 461419, but I will update
this as soon as I can fully retest this (i.e. when the other bug is resolved).

To be clear, the problem is not the potential vulnerability--IS has
assured that we are not vulnerable. The concern is that more than half
of Launchpad's users are Firefox users, and we want to keep them from
being concerned about Launchpad, and keep us from having to reply to
security questions about this issue.
