[Bug 576724] Re: Ubuntu Lucid grub2 dist-upgrades result in confusion

The person with the netbook is affected worse as they can't just insert
their windows dvd to repair.

I think it's pretty serious when a product like wubi is offered and a
simple update renders the computer unbootable. Anybody have an opinion?

[Bug 344878] Re: file name to long when creating new file (ecryptfs_lookup: lookup_one_len() returned [-36] on lower_dentry)

2010-07-28 Thread Tim Gardner
With regard to option 1, how about a mount option that would allow FNEK
to fail gracefully, i.e., if the encrypted file name is too long then
just use the unencrypted name on the lower file system ? This would make
the user complicit in the decision to leak unencrypted file names. This
would also at least allow programs to run (such as Evolution) that
generate long meaningless file names.

[Bug 610896] [NEW] attempts to mount with allow_other set, even when you don't ask

2010-07-28 Thread Jon Dowland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

$ vdfuse  -f /media/win7/Users/Jon/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/ra.vdi ~/mnt
fusermount: option allow_other only allowed if 'user_allow_other' is set in

I did not ask vdfuse to set the allow_other option. You can, by
specifying -a, but there is no (documented) corresponding "don't"
option.

The default setting for user_allow_other in fuse.conf as supplied by
Ubuntu is "no".

[Bug 605614] Re: [ATI] GPU lockup with gfxpayload=keep

2010-07-28 Thread andrew thomas
I have just installed the new 2.6.35-12.17 kernel. It is now hit and
miss as to whether I can boot to a graphical desktop. I sometimes get
corruption at shutdown. The weird thing is that if I get corruption at
shutdown, it will boot to gdm, yet when the ubuntu logo is displayed at
shutdown, the next boot locks and I have to ctl-alt-f2 and restart. I
also have updated mesa to 7.9.0+git20100727.

[Bug 573118] Re: Selected item text non visible under Lucid

2010-07-28 Thread Jonathan
Ok more on this one.

when upgrading in Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 it seams like the
mythfrontend and mythbackend dont upgard properly ive tried three times.

two out of three report version .22 after the upgrade in some places and
the other one works fine .23 no issues.

Must be one of those funny dependence things.

Ive fixed it by re-running the dist-upgrade on the ones that had this
problem now they are all .23 and working fine

[Bug 374567] Re: tomcat6 with spring throws org/springframework/core/NestedExceptionUtils

2010-07-28 Thread Bob Kerns
Great!

It would be even better if someone (you or I or an interested bystander)
figured out just what permissions it really needs. I tried guessing, but
that didn't work. Since (as is typical of classloader issues) it doesn't
really tell you what went wrong, this probably needs either seriously
systematic trial-and-error or setting up to attach a debugger.

BTW, enabling security by default led to a bug in Apache Tiles getting
fixed, so some good came of the experiment!

(Every time I see 'Lucid' I think of the Lisp company of the same name
from the '80's and early '90's.)

2010-07-28 Thread Hubertus Hiden
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 31471 ***

Discovered it here with the latest Firefox on Lucid.

   1. Open Nautilus and locate the .gvfs directory in your home directory
(ctrl-h displays the hidden entries)
   2. Right click on .gvfs and make a link.
   3. Rename the “Link to .gvfs” to something like “Network”
   4. Drag the entry from above to your Nautilus bookmarks

This should make the behaviour "almost" as expected.
You could omit steps 2 and 3 but you would end up with a not very descriptive
link called .gvfs

[Bug 610897] [NEW] Elevated privileges asking for wrong user account

2010-07-28 Thread Jamie Pietarinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

I have installed Likewise Open to be able to authenticated users to AD.
I now have 2 users with the same user name (i.e. jdoe and domain\jdoe).
When installing a program in Software Center, I am prompted to enter a
psw for jdoe, but I am logged into domain\jdoe. This should not happen
since domain\jdoe does not have sudoers rights but jdoe does.
Installing software using the domain\jdoe via apt-get (synaptic, update-
manager) does not allow me to do this.

Steps to reproduce bug:
1. Create user jdoe with sudoers rights
2. Install LikeWise Open and setup authentication information
3. Log onto Ubuntu using domain\jdoe
4. Try to install an application using Software Center (do not type in psw)
5. When prompted for password type in password for domain\jdoe. Application
will state that you are entering the wrong password.
6. Enter password for jdoe account (which has sudoers rights)

[Bug 577183] Re: keyboard and/or mouse freezing

2010-07-28 Thread L Schmiedl
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 528720 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/528720

The issue sounds like the problem on my notebook Dell D830 with a docking
station. I installed a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 four weeks ago. Before I used Ubuntu
9.04 without any problems.
Now I randomize get freezes on GDM Login. Both keyboards, internal and PC/2,
also the synaptic touchpad and the external mouse are frozen. All other devices
seems to be right. I can shut down the system with the power button and reboot.
Or I can switch the external mouse and keyboard on a PS2-USB-Converter. After I
plugged this in, I can log in and work with the notebook.
After a reboot the fault is disappeared. Mouses and keyboards on PS/2 and
internal devices works fine. The next freeze I'll get 3 or 4 days after.
In case of fault I found the following entries

[27.681159] input: PS/2 Generic Mouse as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input14
[27.881028] psmouse.c: Failed to enable mouse on isa0060/serio1

in /var/log/messages.
I tried the next hints I found in different discussions to this topic, but no
result:

1. use option noapi on grub
2. change kernel from 2.6.32-23-generic-pae to 2.6.32-23-generic
3. change compiz to metacity
4. disable KMS
5. use option noapi and nolapic on grub
6. disable irqbalance

Nothing solve the problem.

[Bug 604874] Re: firefox fails to build from source with Linaro toolchain

2010-07-28 Thread Ulrich Weigand
Hmm ... actually there *is* code in the Mozilla sources to attempt to
ensure proper alignment, in jsstr.cpp:

#ifdef __SUNPRO_CC
#pragma pack(8)
#else
#pragma pack(push, 8)
#endif

JSString JSString::unitStringTable[]
#ifdef __GNUC__
__attribute__ ((aligned (8)))
#endif
= {
U(0x00), U(0x01), U(0x02), U(0x03), U(0x04), U(0x05), U(0x06), U(0x07),

However, the compiler does not respect the attribute.

Minimal test case is:

struct JSString
{
  unsigned int mLength;
  static JSString unitStringTable[];
};

#pragma pack(push, 8)
JSString JSString::unitStringTable[] __attribute__ ((aligned (8))) = { 1 };
#pragma pack(pop)

Building this with g++ -S results in:

.global _ZN8JSString15unitStringTableE
.data
.align  2
.type   _ZN8JSString15unitStringTableE, %object
.size   _ZN8JSString15unitStringTableE, 4
_ZN8JSString15unitStringTableE:
.word   1

.align 2 is wrong; this should be .align 3. Vanilla FSF GCC 4.4.4 gets
this correct, so it does look like a Linaro GCC bug after all.

Interestingly enough, the bug only happens with C++ class static
variables; for "normal" global variables, the alignment attribute is
respected correctly. Looking into GCC now ...

[Bug 603022] Re: [MIR] mlterm

2010-07-28 Thread Usama Akkad
many terminal application are being translated and that is good news for
many language user but for RTL users this mean problem.

as I mentioned in my video comparison between Mlterm and Vte you will
see unreadable messages from many APT related programs (apt-get ,apt-
cache etc...) because they were translated into Arabic. and at
TranslationProject.org there are many terminal software being
translated. RTL user will have to read (package like egakcap)

some says why bother using terminal, will at least half of the help out
there is using terminal commands. do you want to try the "ls" command
and check how does VTE show your folders? سطح المكتب (desktop) will look
like بتكملا حطس  (potksed)

and the same with cd cat and nano. you can't use terminal apps dealing
with RTL text probably.

in short every action with RTL text in your system using terminal will
need a RTL capable terminal. so every time you need a terminal we need a
RTL terminal

as I can see there is too many opposition to having RTL enabled terminal
for RTL users. could we please have at least a suggestion when a
localized system user try to open gnome-terminal that it has a known bug
with RTL text and to suggest some thing else?

here is a simple comparison video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H_HYkyD7wc
and there more here:

>  2. use console to execute installation instructions or config file

I think you got it right but I would like to note (regarding 2) that
if a console program (with existing RTL translation) like apt-get, for
example, is used and the locale env vars are set to some RTL language
(by default) then the program output is unreadable (reversed) and I
guess this is the main motivation for people wishing to include
MLTerm. Possible solutions:
* Don't translate console applications.
* echo "export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8" >> ~/.bashrc

A third use case would be:
3. Some programs embed Terminal emulators (like Ubuntu's good'ol
Update Manager, used to display apt installation progress in a
console) and this issue is not resolved by using MLTerm since it's not
embeddable like vte is.

[Bug 608775] Re: tools/perf: Symbol loading problems in perf report

2010-07-28 Thread Dave Martin
Some patches merged into Arnaldo's perf/core branch at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/acme/linux-2.6.git:

perf report: Don't abbreviate file paths relative to the cwd
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/acme/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=361d13462585474267a0c41e956f1a1c19a93f17

perf tools: Remove unneeded code for tracking the cwd in perf sessions
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/acme/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=88ca895dd4e0e64ebd942adb7925fa60ca5b2a98

There is still a problem with the build-id based caching done in new versions
of the tools.

This can be disabled by passing --no-buildid-cache to perf record (bit
if there are stale files in ~/.debug you may still need to delete them
in order for perf report to work properly).

I'm currently looking into a more complete fix for this.

[Bug 610916] [NEW] gnome-do causes keyboard and mouse to freeze

2010-07-28 Thread Mr. Blonde
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Lucid
gnome-do 0.8.3.1+dfsg-1ubuntu1

I've had my keyboard and mouse lock up once or twice a day in Lucid
until I recently noticed that when gnome-do crashes (it does that
sometimes), there are no more freezes. I've tried re-enabling gnome-do
and the freezes were back. Now that I have it disabled everything is
fine again, so I can say that gnome-do is almost certainly the problem
here.

The other problem is, there's nothing in the logs when it happens.
Keyboard and mouse just freeze and I have to use the power button to
shut down/restart. The only thing that appears in the logs is the power
button being pressed and the subsequent shutdown, no error messages at
all.

[Bug 550479] Re: fails to suspend on Lenovo Thinkpads (T400, T410s, W510) when a SD card is present in the built-in card reader

2010-07-28 Thread RxS
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 477106 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477106

I have a T410s with Xubuntu 10.04, and I had been having suspend issues
all of a sudden. After reading post #9, I did realise that the issue had
cropped up about the time I moved a sd-card to my laptop. Removed the
card and now suspend and hibernate works just fine. Also un-mounting the
card before suspend helps and works just fine.

[Bug 610600] Re: Serious video performance regression 2.28.1->2.30.1

2010-07-28 Thread Robbie Williamson
I just downloaded and compiled 2.28.1 on Maverick and had the same poor
performance that I get with 2.30.1, and I suspect the same will hold
true for Lucid. This seems to indicate a regression in one of the
packages cheese depends on.

[Bug 574781] Re: NEC XV17 1280x960 resolution can't be set

2010-07-28 Thread Kris Holt
Lucky me, I struck gold!

Here's the solution...

Within /etc/X11/xorg.conf change the following line

Virtual 1280 960

to

Virtual 1920 1200

to increase monitor resolution selections offered within the Gnome
Monitor settings.

HERE's the GOLD

Add this line

Driver "nv"

after the line

Identifier  "Configured Video Device"

The use of the nv graphics device driver and the Virtual setting lets my
old monitor trace to orgasmic highs!!!

[Bug 575500] Re: refuses to open files with incorrect encoding

2010-07-28 Thread arkmundi
My solution to the problem:
iconv -f 'UTF-8' -t 'ASCII//IGNORE' -o output-file-name --verbose
input-file-name

The -t 'ASCII//IGNORE' option insures that the offensive characters will
be discarded from the output, and the --verbose option tells you where
they were in the file.
