Hi all, I have the same problem with a RadeonHD graphics card (ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series). System information: - Natty (Ubuntu 11.04) with Unity - clean install - no proprietary graphics drivers installed - added medibuntu packages to software sources (not sure if this is relevant) I'll try to describe my case as exactly as possible: As often as 2-3 out of 5 times, one of the following happens after logging in: 1) Natty just freezes on the splash screen. In this case, if I have the sound turned on, I can usually hear Skype connecting (not always), but I don't see anything. I can move my mouse pointer. 2) Natty freezes on the splash screen, which then goes black, comes back, goes black again, ... and a) finally stays black or b) shows my desktop, but with distorted graphics, mostly no top panel. This case is rare. In all cases except for 2b, hard drive activity stops after a while. While the screen is frozen (splash screen or black) - Ctrl+F2, ... , Ctrl+F8 doesn't get me anywhere. - Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't do anything either. It has taken me up to 5 or 8 consecutive tries until the system boots correctly. After that, everything works as usual. Waking up from hibernation usually works fine, too. I also have the same problem on amd64. Sometimes when pausing a totem video, all audio playing on the system will sound distorted. Under Keyboard Layout options under Alt/Win key behavior I have selected "Meta is mapped to win keys". My understanding of that is that it does what it says, my WIN left/right keys are now Meta left/right. But due to some bug this changes the ALT (not meta or win as could be expected) key behavior in gnome-terminal. Why someone should go to the general sound options on the right of the screen to close the banshee. I closed the banshee and it disappeared from the unity taskbar and it took me a while to find the way to quit the program. Spreading the controls of a program to a gazillion places is a very bad idea. The controls of an application should remain in the application with additional controls wherever else you want. You start the music from applications menu and you have to stop the music from the sound control? Is this intuitive and user-friendly? Close means stop the music and quit the application. it is minimize which means run the music in the background. On the Toshiba Satellite A70, I re-installed my old 100MB testing drive (with which under natty my machine would hang during copying of my Music directory either by ftp or from usb hard drive) and installed a fresh copy of Debian This is running kernel Linux 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Tue Mar 8 21:36:00 UTC 2011 i686. I'm not familiar with Debian but I did notice that it automatically configured an ext3 file system. With this installation, I copy my Music directory with no errors and no system hangs, both from usb and from ftp. >From this process I am pressed to conclude that there is definitely something wrong with the way natty is handling my hard drives on this Toshiba. I don't know what else to try.
