[Bug 1401513] Re: virtualbox-dkms 4.1.12-dfsg-2ubuntu0.6: virtualbox kernel module failed to build

2014-12-11 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1401532] Re: GRUB's Secure Boot implementation loads unsigned kernel without warning

2014-12-11 Thread Marc Deslauriers
Thanks for reporting this.

We aren't currently using SecureBoot for security reasons. Our
SecureBoot support is only to allow installation on computers that have
it enabled by default.

If we ever in the future rely on SecureBoot as a security measure, I
agree a warning would be appropriate.

[Bug 1250618] Re: ogg123 can't play flac files with ID3 tags

2014-12-11 Thread Martin Steghöfer
There is no ID3 in the FLAC format. So technically ogg123 is right: As a
FLAC file, your input file is corrupted.

Personally, I blame the tools that allowed putting ID3 tags into non-MP3
files in the first place. There are proper ways to get the meta
information into the file. But just putting an undefined ID3 section
into the stream isn't one of them.

However, seeing that there are files out there that are corrupted in
such a way, the robustness of playing such files by just skipping the
ID3 part might be a desirable feature. Otherwise people will just blame
ogg123 for not being able to play the file.

So in my opinion this isn't a bug, but a (possibly justified) "wishlist
item". In case it helps your cause, I've provided a possible
implementation of this new feature to the upstream bug tracker:

[Bug 1401532] Re: GRUB's Secure Boot implementation loads unsigned kernel without warning

2014-12-11 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
The purpose of SecureBoot is to prevent untrusted modification of
firmware, thus as per SecureBoot specs no unsigned code should be called
before ExitBootServices() has been called. Thus one should be targetting
as to how to bypass that when booted in secure boot mode. For example
the King's & Queen's Gambits vulnerabilities as presented in
http://www.mitre.org/sites/default/files/publications/14-2221-extreme-
escalation-presentation.pdf

Correction: I had "libimobiledevice4" installed but not

libimobiledevice-utils depends on libimobiledevice4
libimobiledevice4 does not depend on libimobiledevice-utils

They should probably be cross-dependent.

[Bug 1401677] [NEW] hwdb.bin does not exist

2014-12-11 Thread Bruce Pieterse
Public bug reported:

Using the current daily build of vivid for Ubuntu Gnome in Virtualbox,
after the welcome screen is displayed and switching to tty1 on the live
CD I see:

starting version 217
hwdb.bin does not exist, please run udevadm hwdb --update
Network interface NamePolicy= disabled on kernel commandline, ignoring.
invalid key/value pair in file /lib/udev/rules.d/97-dmraid.rules on line 8,
starting at character 95 ('a')
[45.279072] systemd-logind[3430]: Failed to start user service: Unknown unit:
user@999.service

Welcome to Ubuntu Vivid Vervet (development branch)
...snip...

Last week the above output was present post-installation. Currently this
is not present post-installation with the current daily build.

However the system-logind error (Unknown init) persists and is currently
present post-installation with slight difference of user@999 becoming
user@1000.

I found this bug report which has been marked as "Fix released" but not
sure if these are related or not:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1190947.

I have a screenshot from last week which I installed a daily build image
on physical hardware. Some of the errors in that screenshot are no
longer present (whoopsie & basename). If you need it please let me know.

[Bug 1398597] Re: ideapad yoga needs psmouse reload

hm, those are i386 only, and my userspace is amd64.

The instructions are interesting, let me see if I can build kernels
myself using those instructions to hopefully speed up the feedback /

[Bug 967399] Re: [11.10] Elantech trackpoint does not work Lenovo

2014-12-11 Thread Roman Lenskij
I've already posted my solution for this in Bug #1070207 which seems to
be a duplicate of this bug.

No need to recompile the kernel, just use DKMS :)

Can confirm that this bug still exists on Lenovo L430/L530 with Ubuntu
14.10

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByR4ekc5XtmPTWxQUkdZWkt2YXM/view?usp=sharing

The link points to a dkms tar.gz with a backported elantech driver from
the current 3.18 kernel (that has the the fix for the issue included).

I call it "backported" as it was _slightly_ changed.
__set_bit(INPUT_PROP_POINTING_STICK, tp_dev->propbit); had to be commented out
in elantech.c as kernel 3.16 doesn't support the INPUT_PROP_POINTING_STICK bit.

Apart from elantech.c and elantech.h everything else was coppied from
the latest 3.16 ubuntu kernel sources.

This has been tested with ubuntu 14.10, *should* be compatible with
ubuntu 14.04 (not tested)

TL;DR:
Download
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByR4ekc5XtmPTWxQUkdZWkt2YXM/view?usp=sharing
sudo apt-get install dkms
sudo dkms ldtarball psmouse-elantech-3-18.tar.gz
sudo dkms install -m psmouse -v elantech-3-18
sudo rmmod psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse

[Bug 1336451] Re: Cannot boot/run ubuntu without acpi=off or nolapic. Freezes otherwise.

2014-12-11 Thread Callan
Sorry for the delay. My laptop was away for a while getting repaired.
Apparently water magically appeared on the GPUs and the mobo. Allowing
the repair to cost me instead of the manufacturer. Lovely :-/

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate all the help I can get. Fed up with
windows lol.

Anyway I tried to run apport-collect 1336451. I was unable to do so
because there were missing python modules. At 1st it was pyqt4.qtcore. I
managed to install that. But after that it was pykde4.kdecore and my
Google-fu was not strong enough to find out how to get that.

On the kernel side. I used the kernel from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-vivid/

This is what I did:
- Removed fglrx.
- Rebooted with nomodeset and nolapic.
- Installed:

linux-image-3.18.0-031800-generic_3.18.0-031800.201412071935_amd64.deb

linux-headers-3.18.0-031800_3.18.0-031800.201412071935_all.deb

linux-headers-3.18.0-031800-generic_3.18.0-031800.201412071935_amd64.deb
- Rebooted with only nomodeset.

Unfortunately its still the same as before. Somewhere between 10 to 30
seconds after the login screen loads it freezes completely. The mouse
stops moving, its unable to change to a different TTY and I have to
force a shutdown by holding down the power button.

Adding the relevent tags and changing to confirmed as requested.

[Bug 1370014] Re: Remmina Launching Remote Sessions Larger than Workspace

2014-12-11 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
You can detect which version of remmina you are using by running this as
one command:

sudo apt-get install apt-show-versions ; sudo apt-show-versions remmina

In Ubuntu 14.01 this returns:

remmina:amd64/trusty 1.0.0-4ubuntu3 uptodate

What version is being run in Ubuntu 14.10?

It seems like I tested 14.10 and did not have this bug we are reporting
here. I'm hoping we can get the corrected version of Remmina into the
14.01 LTS. Is this likely?

is not related to Secure Boot directly. It can affect Secure Boot and
maybe turn it off, but that is not the direction I was looking for in
this "bug" report. Of course, we are looking into several other aspects
to circumvent Secure Boot, and this presentation is indeed relevant.
However, GRUB not verifying the kernel is something what should be done
later on or display the user with a warning (as discussed previously).

Re: [Bug 1239578] Re: No wireless support for Realtek RTL8192EE [10ec:818b]

2014-12-11 Thread K Xu
Hi Adam,

I am using a version of this driver I got from Larry Finger, but it seems
to be buggy as my internet often drops. I am using it on a T440s on Ubuntu
12.04.

Should I update to Trusty, expecting to help solve this issue?

Thanks in advance,
Kelvin
