[Bug 1428026] Re: change seeds to keep upstart as init system on Ubuntu Touch

2015-03-04 Thread Martin Pitt
Updated plan:

Right now:
 - Switch ubuntu-minimal to "init" (no-op as init's preferred alternative is
upstart).
 - Add "upstart" dependency to ubuntu-touch, as an extra precaution; lots of
packages in -touch actually depend on upstart, but let's be explicit. (No-op
right now, but this will prepare us for doing the switch)
 - Explicitly uninstall systemd-sysv in livecd-rootfs
(http://paste.ubuntu.com/10525503/) to convince apt to uninstall systemd-sysv
and install upstart.

When we do the switch:

 - Upload "init" with flipped dependencies (systemd-sysv | upstart)
 - Add "systemd-sysv" to ubuntu-standard for switching upgrades.

[Bug 1427654] Re: FFE: switch system init to systemd [not touch] in 15.04

2015-03-04 Thread Martin Pitt
** Description changed:

  As per https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/core-1411-systemd-
  migration we aimed for switching the system (not session) init from
  upstart to systemd this cycle. As this was by and large a 1.2 man show,
  this took a little longer. One of the remaining blockers for switching
  the default was to fix NFS (bug 1312976) which is now ready to be
  uploaded. There is also juju (bug 1409639, landed upstream now) and maas
  (bug 1423613, scheduled), but for those we can work around missing
  systemd support by installing upstart on instances.

  We are a few days past feature freeze now, bug Steve and I discussed
  last week, and we still want to aim for switching the default in vivid.
  To be clear, this will affect Ubuntu desktop/server/cloud and the
  flavours like Kubuntu, but *NOT* ubuntu-touch. Migration to systemd is
  blocked on touch (too old kernels, some unported jobs), and was not
- scheduled for vivid. For that we need to fork ubuntu-minimal-touch to
- keep upstart (there is a work item on the spec).
+ scheduled for vivid. For that we need to ensure to keep upstart on Touch
+ (there is a work item on the spec).

  I know from at least Kubuntu and Ubuntu GNOME that they are pushing for
  switching to systemd. We should get an ack from the others
  (Lubuntu/Xubuntu/MATE) before doing the switch; but quite a lot of vivid
  users are running systemd already, and I believe we shook out the worst
  bugs now.

  So if/once the release team generally agrees, these are the things which
  need to  happen before switching:

- * Signoff/test from remaining flavours (MATE, Xubuntu, Lubuntu)
-   * Land NFS
-   * Fork ubuntu-minimal-touch
+   * Signoff/test from remaining flavours (MATE, Xubuntu, Lubuntu)
+   * Land NFS (bug 1312976)
+   * Ensure Touch keeps upstart (bug 1428026)

  Operationally, the switch is merely to change s/upstart/systemd-sysv/ in
  the seeds, i. e. flip the dependency in ubuntu-minimal. I did that in
  https://launchpad.net/~pitti/+archive/ubuntu/systemd, fixed ureadahead,
  and verified that upgrades from trusty and utopic cleanly upgrade to
  vivid+PPA with removing upstart and installing systemd-sysv.

  Around that time I will send a mail to ubuntu-devel-announce@ to warn
  about the impending switch, and give some pointers how to boot with
  upstart (from grub menu or reinstalling upstart), how to debug
  boot/shutdown issues, etc.

  Contingency plan: This will trigger wider testing, and most certainly
  uncover more integration issues. I'll try to keep up with them, but if
  we get to a point where we find that there are too many/too serious
  regressions, we can flip the seed back to upstart and get back to the
  situation today.

[Bug 1428087] [NEW] Need (some) Autopilot tests to run in different orientations

2015-03-04 Thread Christian Dywan
Public bug reported:

We've had regressions in behavior and at least one crash recently due to
the lack of testing under different orientations. Evidently even manual
testing doesn't cover basic use cases judging by the nature of those
issues - which may be in part due to development images receiving less
QA attention, which makes it even more problematic.

1. We need ways to execute Autopilot tests under different orientations.
2. A test needs to be able to change orientation mid-way.

** Affects: ubuntu-ui-toolkit (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Critical
 Status: Confirmed

[Bug 1428091] [NEW] regexec/regcomp fails on regular expression containing UTF-8 multi-byte characters

2015-03-04 Thread Joep Jansen
Public bug reported:

I want to do a regular expression match on UTF-8 formatted strings.
A simple example is matching a string consisting of 1 or 2 uppercase
characters, including Ä,Ë,Ï,Ö,Ü.
The extended regular expression I use is:

'^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{1,2}$'

Expected behaviour:

Input Expect
--
Ä   Match
ÄBMatch
ABC  Fail

Test using grep works OK:
$ echo Ä |grep -E '^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{1,2}$'
Ä
$ echo ÄB |grep -E '^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{1,2}$'
ÄB
$ echo ABC |grep -E '^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{1,2}$'

The same test using a simple test program using regex/regcomp:

$ ./regex Ä '^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{1,2}$'
MATCH (Ä) (^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{1,2}$)

$ ./regex ÄB '^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{1,2}$'
MISS  (ÄB) (^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{1,2}$)

$ ./regex ABC '^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{1,2}$'
MISS  (ABC) (^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{1,2}$)

It seems that the single symbol Ä counts as two symbols here, because
this works:

$ ./regex Ä '^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{2}$'
MATCH (Ä) (^[A-ZÄ-Ü]{2}$)

[Bug 1411140] Re: systemd-machine-id-commit.service fails on live system

2015-03-04 Thread Didier Roche
IRC context from today:
didrocks | apw: I just tried t_name_to_handle_at.c from man name_to_handle_at
apw | didrocks, it seems to be returning ENOSUPP for me
apw | didrocks, well it failed, as expected
 didrocks | apw: so, I guess this is expected that overlayfs doesn't support it

 didrocks | hum, I wonder how I can detect if a file is a mount point (meaning,
I guess, in that context, being overridden)
 didrocks | apw: the systemd logic is to test a path, test the parent path, and
check mount_id
 didrocks | the fallback is using stat()

 didrocks | and comparing st_dev

  apw | which sounds ok ?

  apw | oh perhaps not if the path is a file and the parent a directory

 didrocks | apw: yeah, that exactly what happens here, path is file, parent a
dir
  apw | its not clear that name_to_handle_at would work any better if it
did work of course
  apw | this seems like an odd way to work out what is a mountpoint to me,
then again it is systemd
 didrocks | apw: just run a test, and I confirm that st_dev is different if
path == file from parent == dir.
 didrocks | apw: hum, yeah, seems tricky to even think of a workaround…

 didrocks | the easiest way would be to take another file (if any) into the
same dir, but doesn't seem efficient…

  * touch: Explicitly uninstall systemd-sysv, to help apt to install upstart
when the preferred "init" alternative is systemd-sysv. Also explicitly
install packagekit to help the problem resolver. Thanks Colin Watson!

[Bug 1425878] Re: Low disk space icon is ugly and out of place on touch

2015-03-04 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
This is not a design issue. The design does not even use a notification,
let alone an icon, so the implementation is completely off-piste.

** No longer affects: ubuntu-ux

** Description changed:

  The icon used when an indicator message appears telling me I'm low on
  disk space is the default 'error' icon. It doesn't fit in with the other
  icons used on the system.

- Screenshot attached.

[Bug 1420839] Re: [Acer Extensa 5620Z] Supend/Resume fail (reboots)

2015-03-04 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Joan CiberSheep, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from
kernel 3.19 to 4.0-rc2 in order to identify the last bad commit,
followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been
identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into
your release. Could you please do this following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit
bisecting.

[Bug 1428068] Re: plymouth-upstart-bridge termination messages post installation

2015-03-04 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1428068/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1427999] Re: cloud-init does not purge with systemd

2015-03-04 Thread Martin Pitt
So the hang is just specific to purging, lowering importance. However,
this still looks a bit worrying:

[7.142392] cloud-init[787]: Command: ['initctl', 'emit', 'cloud-config',
'CLOUD_CFG=/var/lib/cloud/instance/cloud-config.txt']
[7.143936] cloud-init[787]: Exit code: 1
[7.145140] cloud-init[787]: Reason: -
[7.146076] cloud-init[787]: Stdout: ''
[7.147401] cloud-init[787]: Stderr: 'initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart:
Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused\n'

Does anything depend on this functionality?

[Bug 1427999] Re: cloud images don't boot with systemd

2015-03-04 Thread Martin Pitt
Reproducer:

wget
http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/vivid/current/vivid-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk1.img
echo -e 'instance-id: nocloud\nlocal-hostname: test1\n' > meta-data
cat < user-data
#cloud-config
password: ubuntu
ssh_pwauth: True
runcmd:
 - (while [ ! -e /var/lib/cloud/instance/boot-finished ]; do sleep 1; done;
apt-get -y purge cloud-init; shutdown -P now) &
EOF
genisoimage -output seed.iso -volid cidata -joliet -rock user-data meta-data
kvm -serial stdio -snapshot -drive
file=vivid-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk1.img,if=virtio -drive
file=seed.iso,if=virtio,readonly

This uses -snapshot so that you can mess around with the downloaded
image several times without changing it.

This hangs with today's 20150304 image, but works fine on 20150303's.
Apparently it's stuck on purging cloud-init, which worked until
yesterday. (We do that in CI so that you can boot the resulting images
without the seed.iso, and also to minimize the installed packages so
that we can actually run tests of cloud-init and similar themselves).

[Bug 1425681] Re: grub2 does not install on encrypted lvm

2015-03-04 Thread sudodus
@phillw:

Comment #8 'Be interesting to hear the opinions of the server team...
Did this used to work?'

The Ubuntu server test-case for encryption uses 'only' encrypted disk
with LVM, not encrypted home inside it. So this is another indication
(alongside the encrypted desktop test-cases), that Lubuntu should do the
same thing.

@ everybody:

Skipping 'encrypted home inside encrypted disk with LVM' makes things
much easier to get working. My tests today indicate, that the Lubuntu
alternate test-case works with this small modification. We need not even
unmount any partition earlier than the installer wants to do it.

I just tested that it works with very different original partition
tables (GPT and several partitions of various kinds)

- the 64-bit alternate Lubuntu Vivid installer works
- the 32-bit alternate Lubuntu Vivid installer works

I modified the test-case for encryption only at these places:

'No' for encrypted home directory # Changed from 'Yes'. This is the
most important modification.

'Yes' unmount mounted partitions in the target drive # Additional item
which is important.

'No' to install grub boot loader to master boot record. Instead select
the target drive for the bootloader manually. # Changed from 'Yes'.
This is optional but I recommend it because the automatic choice often
creates problems for me.

-o-

It is not necessary to enter another text screen and unmount any
partition earlier than the installer wants to do it.

[Bug 1427999] Re: cloud-init does not purge with systemd

2015-03-04 Thread Martin Pitt
Ah, I know now. cloud-init's prerm stops cloud-init-local.service, so if
you are trying to purge cloud-init from user-data, stopping this will
kill apt/dpkg/etc. I'll work around that in autopkgtest, but I wonder if
we want to support that case in cloud-init itself. I'll have a closer
look and prepare a patch.

[Bug 1428114] [NEW] Need OSK input device on phones

2015-03-04 Thread Christian Dywan
Public bug reported:

Currently although it may look as though we have an OSK in Autopilot
tests running on phones, keyboard input emits synthetic events. This
makes testing of particular behavior involving pre-edit text impossible
to test. We don't have unit tests for this either because maliit is very
hard to spawn, so we essentially never run any of the tests for it.

def get_keyboard():

"""Return the keyboard device."""
# TODO return the OSK if we are on the phone. --elopio - 2014-01-13
return input.Keyboard.create()

As per my understanding we should have an input device that talks to
maliit using introspection (accessibility?), which is the way tests run
in ubuntu-keyboard, but those aren't right now re-usable by other
projects.

I think we should extend these to be used also on unit tests. We do not
run those as we do not have OSK on desktop environments. I think it
would be worth having those there as well.

[Bug 1428112] Re: cloud-init-nonet hangs when loopback alias exists

2015-03-04 Thread Matthew Buckett
I worked around this by editing /etc/network/if-up.d/upstart and
excluding the loopback interfaces aliases from the auto interfaces, the
change was:

found=$(ifquery --list --allow auto 2>/dev/null) || return

to:

found=$(ifquery --list --allow auto --exclude lo:\* 2>/dev/null)
|| return

Then it doesn't wait for the loopback aliases and everything starts up
fast.

[Bug 1428120] [NEW] After recent updates, localhost/phppgadmin gives a 404

2015-03-04 Thread Kevin Donnelly
Public bug reported:

I did the usual software updates when notified a couple of days ago, and since
then I can no longer access phpPgAdmin. Uninstalling and reinstalling has no
effect.  Going to http://localhost/phppgadmin/ gives:
The requested URL /phppgadmin/ was not found on this server.
instead of showing the login page.

I am currently using Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS, Apache 2.4.7-1ubuntu4.1, PHP
5.5.9+dfsg-1ubuntu4.6, PostgreSQL 9.3+154 - not sure what the versions
for the last 3 were before the recent update.

It seems one of the software updates has borked phpPgAdmin. Would love
to get it back again!

Thanks.

[Bug 1428121] [NEW] Intel HDMI Audio not working with IOMMU enabled

2015-03-04 Thread Kelvin Middleton
Public bug reported:

New ASRock Z97 Extreme 6 motherboard with an Intel i7 4790S and an
Nvidia GTX 650.

Host uses Intel IGD for video and HDMI audio out.

When I pass kernel flags 'intel_iommu=on' or 'intel_iommu=on,igfx_on'
HDMI audio no longer functions although the device and modules seem to
load and I cannot locate any error messages. In this configuration
IOMMU functions as expected and I can successfully pass the Nvidia card
through to a KVM guest using VFIO.

As per this
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1223840) bug
report and the linked bugzilla thread I attempted to use kernel flag
'intel_iommu=on,igfx_off'. This resolves the HDMI audio out but breaks
IOMMU as in VGA pass through generates DMA errors.

I'm running from a clean installation of 14.10 with no modifications to
the kernel or kvm, qemu, libvirt or virt-manager.

In either scenario above the analogue audio out continues to function, I
haven't tested the optical out as I have no hardware to do so.

[Bug 1427680] Re: bluetooth on asus n551 not working

2015-03-04 Thread shutt1e
has been the support of this device dropped lately? because seem to me when i
first updated to 14.02 from 12.04 the bluetooth was working, then the first
batch of auto updates and the next ones (including kernel updates) broken it at
all.
unluckly i have purged the older kernels because the space on my ssd isn't huge
so can't test older kernels. but maybe i can try burning again the iso and
start from cd.
