[Bug 1723577] Re: Artfull won't start with wayland activated

2017-10-15 Thread amano
Even after the updates of today (with the new kernel and the gnome-shell
crash fix) the boot splash is getting stuck most of the time (certainly
3 out of 4 tries).

Only switching to the nvidia 340 blob fixes that (then it boots
reliably, not showing Plymouth at all).

I don't think that it is a Plymouth bug, but GDM crashing when trying to
bring up Wayland.

Since it crashes that early I don't think that it is related to mutter
or gnome-shell at all. Or does GDM use mutter these days?

[S]Does apport leave a crash log in /var/crash/ with Ubuntu freezing or
crashing that early?[/S] EDIT: Nope, no crash log in /var/crash/ at all
:(

A regression in X? In Mesa?

[Bug 1723577] Re: Artfull won't start with wayland activated

2017-10-15 Thread amano
For me it worked reliably the whole development cycle until the week
leading up to the 7th of October. It is borked just for about a week
now. On the 5th of October I remember it being fine, it was borked when
starting Ubuntu up on the morning of October 7th.

Now it seems like a dealbreaker worth debugging (if I knew where to
start).

[Bug 1723577] Re: Artfull won't start with wayland activated

2017-10-15 Thread amano
If I get past Plymouth and into GDM (I have to try 4 times to succeed),
I can log into the “Ubuntu“ session reliably. So I think that this bug
is rather a GDM one than a gnome-shell one.

Rather a GDM bug. I it doesn't get stuck on Plymouth, it starts up the
“Ubuntu“ gnome-shell session reliably for me.

[Bug 1633216] Re: tp-smapi-dkms 0.41-1: tp-smapi kernel module failed to build

2017-10-15 Thread luckyrings
hello all,

I reinstalled my Ubuntu 16.04LTS on my Lenovo X230 and used a self
created packet list to reinstall automatic all my software. As there
was NO repository configured for the ppa:linrunner/tlp it installed by
accident the version from ubuntu sources: "tp-smapi-
dkms_0.41-1_all.deb".

linrunner already set what is wrong (0.41-1 won't compile with a kernel
>= 4.7).

After adding the repository ppa:linrunner/tlp and reinstalled the tlp
services from the wiki (http://thinkwiki.de/TLP_-_Linux_Stromsparen) as
described:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linrunner/tlp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install tlp tlp-rdw
sudo apt-get install tp-smapi-dkms acpi-call-dkms

It upgraded the tp-smapi-dkms and the error seems now gone and away.
Just to consider this information, maybe it helps you. I am open for
feedback here.

Kind regards
luckyrings

[Bug 1723713] [NEW] please add support for libssl 1.1

2017-10-15 Thread trophime
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I would like to "port" juju-mongo-tools3.2 to debian/buster.
I run into a problem connected to ssl version, I guess.

To my understanding debian is moving from ssl 1.02 to 1.1.1 version.
Now libssl-dev package refers to latest version 1.1.1.

Would it be possible to prepare this migration for juju-mongo-tools3.2?

Best

2017-10-15 Thread mhogo mchungu
That sounds like a permission related issue on the volume.

Do you still get the same behavior on a newly created volume?

Did you open the volume in read/write mode?

What file system does your volume use?

When you have the volume unlocked, run the following command and post its
output:

cat /proc/self/mountinfo | grep zuluCrypt

ps: copy and paste the command to make sure you dont mistype it.

[Bug 1723644] Re: NetworkManager hang

2017-10-15 Thread Mihai Bojescu
** Description changed:

- Recently I had issues with NetworkManager on my Kubuntu 17.10 beta2
installation. When I try to restart or close
+ Recently I had issues with NetworkManager. When I try to restart or close
NetworkManager, the process hangs. First it sends a SIGTERM to the
NetworkManager process, and after a while it sends SIGKILL, yet nothing
happens. After the attempt to restart/close NetworkManager, the OS behaves
  badly:
  - journalctl doesn't work, doesn't output anything, SIGTERMing/SIGABRTing/
SIGKILLing it causes the kill command to hang (no matter how many times I try
it), it also hangs the terminal
  - 'sudo dmesg' hangs (killing it with SIGKILL/SIGTERM/SIGABRT hangs the kill
  command, can't close the terminal)
  - the OS won't reboot/suspend/shutdown (it does only after holding the restart
  button)

Suspending/rebooting normally/shutdowning normally the laptop hangs the OS
  (because of NetworkManager).

  What I've tried:
- - reinstalling NetworkManager (using --purge)
+ - reinstalling NetworkManager (uninstalling it using --purge, installing it
clean)
  - deleting ~/.config
  - deleting ~/.cache
  - installing a version from NetworkManager from Debian (version: 1.8.4.2),
  reinstalling NetworkManager from Ubuntu back

[Bug 1510731] Re: Bug in ubiquity-frontend-kde: Can't create LUKS encrypted volumes during manual disk setup in Kubuntu 17.10 (does not affect Ubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, or Ubuntu Budgie)

2017-10-15 Thread vfspirit
I found a somewhat simpler workaround for this (17.04 and 17.10):

On the "Installation type" screen, I select guided partitioning with
luks & lvm. This way the two fields for the passwords appear. Then, I
enter my desired password, switch back to manual partitioning, and click
next.

This way, when I create the physical volume for encryption, the
encrypted volume shows up as expected.

[Bug 1723732] [NEW] XShmGetImage() crops returned image

2017-10-15 Thread Alberts Muktupāvels
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

XShmGetImage() crops the image to the absolute region (x,y)-(x+w,y+h).
For example, given a window with geometry 640x480+200+300 and a 640x480
image:

  XShmGetImage(display, window, image, 0, 0, AllPlanes);

returns only the upper-left 440x180 of the window image, clearing the
rest of the image to empty.

Upstream fix:
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=885636b7d42b3c7b151fc386d358184db004ce45

[Test Case]

- Use xwininfo to get xid for CSD window, for example, nautilus

- Use following command to take screenshot:
gst-launch-1.0 ximagesrc xid=0x667 num-buffers=1 ! videoconvert ! pngenc !
filesink location=out.png

- out.png should include full window screenshot

- if screenshot looks good without patch, then repeat steps moving
window to different place on screen, or try to maximize and/or try with
different CSD window.

- actually it is not required to test with CSD windows, bug is
reproducible also with SSD windows.

[Regression Potential]

I don't know...

I think from you description you can install this system from the new
ISO using hdmi. Would you therefore be able to check out some of the
interim kernels between 4.12.0-12 and 4.13.0-16 to see which of those
work. They should be available in the launchpad librarian. Don't
forget to install both linux-image and linux-image-extra when testing.

[Bug 1708881] Re: USB Stick corrupted - The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 2048 bytes

2017-10-15 Thread Damiön la Bagh
So I finally found the answer after searching for a year!

First identify which drive letter the USB stick has received from the
kernel

sudo parted --list
For example this USB drive is on Device Serial Disk h: (/dev/sdh)

Model: KINGSTON DataTraveler G3 (scsi) Schijf /dev/sdh: 4001MB
Use the information to wipe all the partition tables and data from the drive

⚠ WARNING THIS NEXT STEP WILL DESTROY ALL DATA ON THE DRIVE ⚠

sudo wipefs --all /dev/sdX
Make sure that you have chosen the correct USB stick for the value of X so you
don't accidentally wipe your harddrive/SSD

Warning message

"The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 2048 bytes, but
Linux says that it is 512 bytes." Means that the dd command in behind
the nice GUI forgot to specify the bs=2048 option.

Background

It's not that the unused space is wasted. The USB disk has been
corrupted by USB Startup Disk Creator. For some reason USB Startup Disk
Creator has become CD-ROM creator. It writes your USB-Stick to iso9660
format which is only intended for CD-ROM's. Since new computers don't
come with CD-ROM players or writers anymore this is a regression bug

[Bug 1708881] Re: USB Stick corrupted - The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 2048 bytes

2017-10-15 Thread sudodus
Most linux distros provide hybrid iso files, which work both to create
DVD boot disks and USB boot drives. This means that there will be an iso
9660 file system in the USB drive.

This is not wrong, it is a working system for a live-only drive and
installer drive. The problem is that some tools do not understand, what
it is, and complain, that is is corrupted. Fortunately there will be a
new version of gparted in 17.10, which can recognize such drives.

[Bug 1708881] Re: USB Stick corrupted - The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 2048 bytes

2017-10-15 Thread sudodus
I should add to the previous comment, that hybrid iso files are made to
be *cloned* to USB drives (and memory cards) to make boot drives. The
cloning process is very robust and likely to succeed. For this reason
the Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator was revamped from a bug-ridden
extracting tool to a simplified and robust cloning tool. The new version
was introduced with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

There are cases when you want to use a USB pendrive both as a live drive
and a storage device. This does not work with the read-only iso 9660
file system. In these cases you can use another tool, an extracting tool
to create a persistent live drive.

[Bug 1716429] Re: pykerberos for trusty does not include CVE-2015-3206 fix

2017-10-15 Thread Mathieu Lafon
Hi Steve,

> When debian fixed this issue [...], they left the default to off, in order to
> not break [...]
> The update for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS included this default.

You're correct about debian, but this is not exactly what is in the 12.04 LTS
update. The patch for precise has two issues:
- The default value for 'verify' in the source code (src/kerberos.c) is 1
(enabled) although pysrc/kerberos.py (only used for documentation) has
'verify=False'
- The 'verify' argument was not made optional in the PyArg_ParseTuple() call so
whatever default value was specified, the call would fail if there was not 5
parameters.

So 12.04 LTS already broke existing setups (and I was personally
impacted at that time).

The patch included in xenial has then fixes these issues:

pykerberos (1.1.5-2):
  * [d3133b6] Set verify=True in docs too. This makes the docs consistent
with the default behaviour of the function.
  * [792f3b6] Make verify option really optional. So far it correctly
defaulted to true but couldn't be skipped.

[Bug 1710377] Re: "Additional Drivers" desktop shortcut missing in Ubuntu 17.10

2017-10-15 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
That “Additional Drivers” has its own .desktop file at all is the result
of two ancient accidents.

First, it dates from 2008, before Ubuntu gained a unified System
Settings utility.

And second, Additional Drivers was merged into Software & Updates Settings, but
nobody has yet taken the next step of integrating Software & Updates Settings
into System Settings.

But as long as you can access it *from* System Settings (and as well as
from Software Updater and Gnome Software), I don’t think it’s
appropriate for it to have a .desktop file at all. That it’s a separate
app is a technical detail.

FWIW, I said much the same thing more than ten years ago.
