[Bug 1771598] [NEW] package sudo 1.8.21p2-3ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: installed sudo package pre-removal script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2018-05-16 Thread Mahesh
Public bug reported:

Hi, I tried editing the sudoers that is located on my Ubuntu setup on
Virtual Box, it didn't allow me to update sudoers due to permission
issues. I changed the permission of sudoers to 777 and was able to add
my user name into it, however after that I was not able to run few
commands hence I got instruction from google to purge and re-install it
however it started throwing error afterwards however I noticed that I
was able to remove my username entries from it before re-installing.
Please suggest if I would need to re-install ubuntu on my virtual box or
the current setup would work as before ?

Thanks,
Mahesh Bhatia

[Bug 1771524] Re: Merge newer dovecot for Cosmic

2018-05-16 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
I had thought of an issue of the breaks/replaces and tested with the first ppa
build.
Indeed old mail-stack-delivery postrm being triggered would mean a restoration
of the cofig before it's installation. This is not how we want it to be
transitioned-out.
Therefore case 11 of https://wiki.debian.org/PackageTransition does not apply
(as that would remove it).
Instead approach #2 would be to add an empty transitional that we will keep
until 20.04 to catch all upgrades dropping it without modifying the
configuration.

I tested an old install with mail-stack-delivery upgrading to the new version.
a) with breaks/replaces
triggers the unwanted remove as expected
b) with a transitional package
   This does what we want
- turn it into an empty package
- does not rebuild the assumed old config
- the transitional can be removed without wreaking havok

Going on with B then ...

[Bug 1437353] Re: UEFI network boot hangs at grub for adapter 82599ES 10-Gigabit SFI/SFP+

2018-05-16 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
Well, the CI part confirms that there is no regression, but there is as
yet no indication that the issue is fixed aside from the cases where
firmware was updated (but then, it's not the SRU).

There's still a need to verify the fix positively on affected hardware.

Now, KingJ's comment says that testing has been done with the version of
grub in bionic, and with the version of grub being SRUed to xenial, and
neither did work. I think that qualifies as verification-failed, and
we'll need to have another look at grub's behavior. At this point, there
is no obvious patch missing, and we'll need to debug using packet
captures to try and make sense of it.

[Bug 1771555] Re: dmesg Error seen on system booting from Ubuntu18.04

2018-05-16 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1771555/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1765724] Re: Xenial -> Bionic - System fails to boot after upgrade - gnome-screensaver & gnome-shell fail to start?

2018-05-16 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
I cannot reproduce this issue anymore with a fresh installation of
xenial upgraded to bionic. I'm wondering if the fontconfig fix that
delayed the boot was causing this issue (bug 1749546)

Setting to incomplete.

These messages should be marked as Warnings instead of Errors as they it
supposedly a warning and not an error.
This was fixed in LP #1656908 / Bug 150596, but seeing it with 'dmesg
--level=err' again in 18.04.
* In Ubuntu 17.04 : after reboot getting message in console like Unable to
open file: /etc/keys/x509_ima.der (-2) (LP: #1656908)
- SAUCE: ima: Downgrade error to warning

Mirroring this bug to distro to fix this in the latest kernel.

Thank you.

[Bug 1770238] Re: [nvidia] Logging in results in a black screen for many minutes after which the login screen reappears and I am able to login fine.

2018-05-16 Thread Jonathan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1543192 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1543192

I cannot view my own error reports, it just tells me I don't have
permission and am not part of the correct group. I filled out the form
to request access so we shall see.

I'm not sure if my original error is a duplicate of bug #154192. There
doesn't appear to be a crash involved. gdm-x-session just seems to shut
itself down because it couldn't find monitors. Even though it works
after a system reload.

 May 9 11:04:06 jcormier-MS-7A93 /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[2581]: (EE)
Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

It definitely does seem I am being hit by a miriad of bugs. Its getting
pretty frustrating to keep using it. And its also hard to tell the
difference between them.

Issues as far as I can tell:
* First login fails due to no usable monitors, if wayland is disabled.
(Workaround, don't disable wayland)
* gnome-calculator and possibly other snap apps lock up the computer when
opened if wayland is disabled. (Workaround, don't disable wayland)
* System locks up and reboots. (Unknown cause, no errors appear in logs as they
don't get flushed to disk.)
* Gnome locks up and I am returned to login screen (Unknown cause but seems to
generate a variety of different crash reports)

[Bug 1758163] Re: Please remove xchat-gnome from Ubuntu (again)

2018-05-16 Thread Kieran Bingham
I find my way here after losing xchat-gnome on the bionic upgrade:

Ok - so I just tried out hexchat - and that seems to be pretty good
alternative / update.

Is there a way to get apt to suggest / recommend hexchat instead of
failing to install xchat-gnome?

Package xchat-gnome is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

It would be useful for that to print the alternatives - or just install
hexchat as a replacement :D

[Bug 1771540] Re: i am not able to install the updates

2018-05-16 Thread dino99
Reporting againg 'xorg' is unrelated to 'upgrade'; should have been reported
against 'apt' instead.
So all the logs joined here are useless for fixing that problem.

What are the outputs of:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Usually in such a case, either some package(s) are broken due to
dependencies conflict. If you have some ppa's package(s) installed, then
downgrade via 'ppa-purge'

[Bug 1771524] Re: Merge newer dovecot for Cosmic

2018-05-16 Thread  Christian Ehrhardt 
Since 2.3.1 is still in experimental (see Debian bug) I moved the
lp1771524/new/debian tag to that manually.

passed all Dovecot bugs of the last 2 years to clear out or consider on
the merge.

Reconstruct, Deconstruct and Logical prepared in git merge workflow.

Checked CVE patches to exist in 2.3.1
- CVE-2017-15132 is already included
- CVE-2017-15130 is already included
- CVE-2017-14461 is already included

There were some conf-breaking changes in 2.3, so I consider it even more
important to make it available early on Cosmic cycle as well as in the
long run towards 20.04.

Note for mail-stack delivery:
- only a few breaks replaces will remain according to case #11 on
https://wiki.debian.org/PackageTransition until after 20.04
- we will not rm-conffile the modifications it had made since it did modify
"its own" but dovecots config, therefore removing would be an unwanted
modification of a users configuration

All that said ready to rebase and drop a lot this time ...

Indeed, when doing a minimal install a normal install is performed and
then a selected list of packages is removed (casper/filesystem.manifest-

How did you initially install libreoffice after doing the minimal

Just installing hexchat would mean adding a "transitional" package in
the hexchat source.

One way to have a suggestion about hexchat would be having command-not-
found handle it. To get an idea of how that works, if you uninstall
hexchat and run hexchat in a terminal, you'll get this output on Ubuntu
18.04 LTS:

$ hexchat

Command 'hexchat' not found, but can be installed with:

sudo snap install hexchat
sudo apt install hexchat

See 'snap info hexchat' for additional versions.

===
So I suggest filing a separate bug against hexchat or command-not-found for
your suggestion.

[Bug 1769346] Re: Unable to install 18.04 server AMD64 with targeted kernel: initramfs-tools

2018-05-16 Thread Manny Flores
I fixed this error by updating my BIOS. Weird - I didn't have this issue
with prior versions including 16.04.4 but when I also tried 16.04.4, I
got the same problem. I might have been using an earlier 16.04.x where
this wasn't an issue. But again, in the end, the BIOS did the trick.

Side-note: I believe this has been fixed in Artful or Bionic as Ubuntu
has migrated to use the debhelper based dbgsym packages (with only a
minor difference in the filename extension). I remember it as Artful
(but the reference eludes me at the moment and I am too lazy to check).

[Bug 1771557] [NEW] NVMe boot drives not supported - failing in generating initramfs

2018-05-16 Thread Guilherme G. Piccoli
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
The initramfs-tools hook-functions script cannot translate nvmeXnYpZ to nvmeXnY
block device, so it's failing and not building the initram disk.

Upstream solution is composed for at least 2 patches (it's a series, but
the 2 below are really the needed ones):

commit 3cb744c9
Author: Ben Hutchings
hook-functions: Rewrite block device sysfs lookup to be generic

commit 8ac52dc0
Author: Ben Hutchings
hook-functions: Include modules for all components of a multi-disk device

Instead of doing the backport, which is huge, we added another sed
substitution: currently the script has substitutions for sdX and hdX, in order
to convert sda1 to sda, for example. The new substitution converts nvmeXnYpZ to
nvmeXnY.
It's less intrusive than the full backport, since this is a SRU to Trusty only.

[Test Case]
To be added.

[Regression Potential]
If the sed expression was somewhat broken, we could have an issue generating
initiramfs for generic block devices, like regular HDDs.

[Bug 1768734] Re: Restoring edge tiled windows on Wayland shrinks them

2018-05-16 Thread mtvoid
I've found a recent bug report for this issue on the GitLab site for mutter:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/issues/140

This also requires me to correct my initial bug report. The issue is
unrelated to client-side decorated windows, but affects all native
Wayland windows, while XWayland windows are unaffected.

[Bug 1771545] [NEW] root.key might be missing

2018-05-16 Thread Alexander Traud
Public bug reported:

Not the underlying package libunbound2 but only the big DNS resolver
package unbound contains a script to install/copy the root.key. If you
install just unbound-anchor, unbound-host, or -dev, this does not happen
and all tools which rely on libunbound.so might not work.

Steps to Reproduce
1) install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS for Desktop (in my case, Minimal)
2) $ sudo apt remove unbound
3) $ sudo apt install unbound-anchor
4) $ sudo unbound-anchor

Expected Result
This should install a root.key at /var/lib/unbound/, because that is the
default location, given unbound-anchor at compile time.

Actual Result
libunbound error: unable to open /var/lib/unbound/root.key for reading: No such
file or directory
libunbound error: error reading auto-trust-anchor-file:
/var/lib/unbound/root.key
libunbound error: validator: error in trustanchors config
libunbound error: validator: could not apply configuration settings.
libunbound error: module init for module validator failed

Notes
This happens *even* after changing the file
/etc/unbound/unbound.conf.d/root-auto-trust-anchor-file.conf
and its "auto-trust-anchor-file" to "/usr/share/dns/root.key" (package
dns-root-data). The same issue happens with $ unbound-host -D example.com
I am not sure how to solve this. My first guess would be that not the package
unbound but the package libunbound2 should install that key file (script
root_trust_anchor_update). This affects not only -anchor and -host but all apps
which rely on libunbound.so, because those tools expect that
"/var/lib/unbound/root.key" exists.

Workarounds
A) create the file yourself:
sudo mkdir /var/lib/unbound
sudo cp /usr/share/dns/root.key /var/lib/unbound/
B) specify the key of the package dns-root-data as command-line option:
sudo unbound-anchor -a "/usr/share/dns/root.key"
I was not able to use this approach for unbound-host.
C) install the whole DNS resolver:
sudo apt install unbound
D) in your own app, instead of one, try two files:
if (0 == access("/var/lib/unbound/root.key", R_OK)) {
status_unbound = ub_ctx_add_ta_file(ub_context,
"/var/lib/unbound/root.key");
} else {
status_unbound = ub_ctx_add_ta_file(ub_context,
"/usr/share/dns/root.key");
}

[Bug 1295267] Re: Windows change Monitor/Desktop after screen lock

2018-05-16 Thread Jeff Van Epps
Similar but maybe not. This is the closest match I've been able to find.
Screens sleep (not lock), when I hit a key to wake it up one window has
moved from one monitor to the other. Always VirtualBox Manager and only
that, not Thunderbird or Chrome or empathy or terminal or anything else
I've found. Ubuntu 18.04 GNOME on Wayland. Nvidia GTX590 using two DVI
ports, one has an adapter to connect to VGA monitor.

[Bug 1747463] Re: kernel crashes during boot unless IOMMU is disabled on Ryzen 1800X

2018-05-16 Thread Joseph Salisbury
@Peridot,
Request from Upstream:

For the original 4.13 kernel, I don't
see any attachments that have the AMD-Vi messages in question. Were they
completion timeouts (like in the later mainline kernel test, which I'll
get to in a bit) or I/O page fault messages? Without that information it
is hard to determine what the issue really is.

(Just as an FYI, if the IOMMU is disabled in BIOS, then iommu=soft is not
necessary on the kernel command line).

For the upstream kernel test, since this is a Ryzen system, it's possible
that the BIOS does not have a requisite fix for SME and IOMMU (see [1]).
On the upstream kernel, if memory encryption is active by default without
this BIOS fix, then the result is AMD-Vi completion-wait timeout messages.
Try booting with mem_encrypt=off on the kernel command line or build a
kernel with CONFIG_AMD_MEM_ENCRYPT_ACTIVE_BY_DEFAULT=n and see if that
allows the kernel to boot.

Thanks,
Tom

Yes, they are intentional. The last upload of ubuntu-release-upgrader
was on April 18th, I guess the archive admins were busy in the week
before release and a lot of packages were demoted thereby causing the
set of demoted packages to be updated.

those bugs have since been repaired. My test hardware was temporarily
removed last week and waiting until resources are back to continue with
testing.

Steps moving forward are to deploy Queens + Bionic on arm64, test cinder
volume hotplug. If the same symptoms remain , then recreate the process
manually without using openstack. as Christian mentioned in one of the
above comments.

[Bug 1765105] Re: HP Smart Array driver fails to load, kernel panics boot process

2018-05-16 Thread Roberto
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1765232 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1765232

I have same problem on HP Proliant ML350 G5 on P400 smart array board,
it's a kernel issue, last working kernel from ubuntu ppa or kernel.org
is 4.13.16

>From kernel 4.14.1, no boot

Tested also other live distrobutions with kernel 4.15 or 4.14 same
issue, I opened a bug on bugzilla.kernel

[Bug 1771364] Re: wireless headset not detecting 16.04

2018-05-16 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.17 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

2018-05-16 Thread Joseph Salisbury
You may need to run the following from a terminal:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then re-install the package or updates.

If that does not resolve your issue, please mark the bug as "Confirmed"

[Bug 1771344] Re: Fix enabling bridge MMIO windows

2018-05-16 Thread Joseph Salisbury
I built a test kernel with commit 13a83eac373c49c0a081cbcd137e79210fe78acd.
The test kernel can be downloaded from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp1771344

Can you test this kernel and see if it resolves this bug?

Note about installing test kernels:
• If the test kernel is prior to 4.15(Bionic) you need to install the
linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
• If the test kernel is 4.15(Bionic) or newer, you need to install the
linux-image-unsigned, linux-modules and linux-modules-extra .deb packages.

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1771557] Re: NVMe boot drives not supported - failing in generating initramfs

2018-05-16 Thread Guilherme G. Piccoli
** Description changed:

- [Impact]
- The initramfs-tools hook-functions script cannot translate nvmeXnYpZ to
nvmeXnY block device, so it's failing and not building the initram disk.
+ [Impact]

- Upstream solution is composed for at least 2 patches (it's a series, but
+ When creating the initramfs image, mkinitramfs has multiple options on
+ how to include modules. The default (and most common) one is the
+ "MODULES=most", which includes the majority of filesystem modules and
+ all the block device drivers. One other option is "MODULES=dep", which
+ tries to descend in the sysfs hierarchy and guess modules to add, with
+ the goal of reduce the size of initramfs.
+
+ For the MODULES=dep case, the initramfs-tools hook-functions script
+ cannot translate nvmeXnYpZ to nvmeXnY block device, so it's failing in
+ the sysfs lookup, so it does not build the initram disk.
+
+ Upstream solution is composed of at least 2 patches (it's a series, but
the 2 below are really the needed ones):

  commit 3cb744c9
  Author: Ben Hutchings
hook-functions: Rewrite block device sysfs lookup to be generic

  commit 8ac52dc0
  Author: Ben Hutchings
hook-functions: Include modules for all components of a multi-disk device

- Instead of doing the backport, which is huge, we added another sed
substitution: currently the script has substitutions for sdX and hdX, in order
to convert sda1 to sda, for example. The new substitution converts nvmeXnYpZ to
nvmeXnY.
- It's less intrusive than the full backport, since this is a SRU to Trusty
only.
+ Instead of doing the huge backport, we added another sed substitution:
currently the script has substitutions for sdX and hdX, in order to convert
sda1 to sda, for example. The new substitution converts nvmeXnYpZ to nvmeXnY.
+ It's less intrusive than the full backport, since this is a minimal SRU to
Trusty only.

  [Test Case]
- To be added.
+ 1. Install Trusty with rootfs in a multi-disk(md) array composed of two nvme
partitions - in my tests, I've used a RAID1.
+
+ (lsblk output of my test env:
+
+ nvme0n1 259:0010G 0 disk
+ └─nvme0n1p1 259:1010G 0 part
+ └─md0 9:0010G 0 raid1 /
+ nvme1n1 259:2010G 0 disk
+ └─nvme1n1p1 259:3010G 0 part
+ └─md0 9:0010G 0 raid1 /
+ )

- [Regression Potential]
- If the sed expression was somewhat broken, we could have an issue generating
initiramfs for generic block devices, like regular HDDs.
+ 2. Once system is booted, modify the "/etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf",
replacing "MODULES=most" to "MODULES=dep".
+
+ 3. Update your initramfs by running something like:
+ "update-initramfs -u -k "
+
+ The initramfs creating procedure will fail, unless the patch from this
+ LP is present.
+
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ If the sed expression was somewhat broken, we could have an issue generating
initiramfs when MODULES is set to "dep", even for generic block devices (like
regular HDDs).
