[Bug 1776616] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 getting stuck at "Starting Reboot" and "Starting Power-Off"
** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Hardware: HPE ProLiant DL360 gen9 Ubuntu Version: 18.04 Problem: When rebooting the server, everything goes well (shutting down services, unmounting etc) until the last step where it reads "Starting Reboot". At this point the system is getting stuck and nothing else can can be done than holding the power button in for a long enough time to turn it off. At the same time as the system get stuck, a red error light is lightening up on the server. This light is green until it reaches this "Starting Reboot" stage. The same happens if the server is shutdown, with the difference that the last message is "Starting Power- Off" instead of "Starting Reboot". The server is installed with a new clean 18.04 installation. This server was rebooting/shutting down without a problem with all releases between 16.04 and 17.10. This problem is serious as it prevents remote reboot. + --- + ProblemType: Bug + AlsaDevices: + total 0 + crw-rw 1 root audio 116, 1 Jun 13 11:16 seq + crw-rw 1 root audio 116, 33 Jun 13 11:16 timer + AplayDevices: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'aplay': 'aplay' + ApportVersion: 2.20.9-0ubuntu7.2 + Architecture: amd64 + ArecordDevices: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'arecord': 'arecord' + AudioDevicesInUse: Error: command ['fuser', '-v', '/dev/snd/seq', '/dev/snd/timer'] failed with exit code 1: + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.04 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=none + MachineType: HP ProLiant DL360 Gen9 + NonfreeKernelModules: zfs zunicode zavl icp zcommon znvpair + Package: linux (not installed) + PciMultimedia: + + ProcEnviron: + TERM=xterm + PATH=(custom, no user) + XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcFB: 0 mgadrmfb + ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/ROOT/ubuntu@/boot/vmlinuz-4.15.0-23-generic root=ZFS=rpool/ROOT/ubuntu ro + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.15.0-23.25-generic 4.15.18 + RelatedPackageVersions: + linux-restricted-modules-4.15.0-23-generic N/A + linux-backports-modules-4.15.0-23-generic N/A + linux-firmware 1.173.1 + RfKill: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'rfkill': 'rfkill' + Tags: bionic + Uname: Linux 4.15.0-23-generic x86_64 + UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) + UserGroups: + + _MarkForUpload: True + dmi.bios.date: 05/21/2018 + dmi.bios.vendor: HP + dmi.bios.version: P89 + dmi.board.name: ProLiant DL360 Gen9 + dmi.board.vendor: HP + dmi.chassis.type: 23 + dmi.chassis.vendor: HP + dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnHP:bvrP89:bd05/21/2018:svnHP:pnProLiantDL360Gen9:pvr:rvnHP:rnProLiantDL360Gen9:rvr:cvnHP:ct23:cvr: + dmi.product.family: ProLiant + dmi.product.name: ProLiant DL360 Gen9 + dmi.sys.vendor: HP ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1776616 Title: Ubuntu 18.04 getting stuck at "Starting Reboot" and "Starting Power- Off" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1776616/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.17 kernel[0]. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. [Bug 1776679] [NEW] Nautilus crashes when dragging files into a subfolder
Public bug reported: Nautilus is very unstable when moving files around. It's quite easy to make it crash, or at least lose any coherent behaviour: 1) create this file structure main_dir / dir1 / dir2 main_dir / file1 main_dir / file2 2) select file1 and file2, and drag them onto dir1 (nautilus goes into dir1) then dir2. 3) nautilus is lost : files are not copied. [Bug 1775743] Re: [regression] Cosmic daily images 20180606-11 install but boots only to grub prompt on EFI systems
For now I'm just writing down some of my random thoughts, but looking at Daniel's diff between the working image and non-working, I don't see anything straightforward that could have caused it. That being said, Dimitri had a good idea that one of the livecd-rootfs changes could have caused it. I now see this which might be somehow related? https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/livecd-rootfs/2.528 Time-wise it could fit, as the package - even though uploaded on the 28th of May, it actually only migrated from cosmic-proposed to cosmic on the 5th of June (our images are built without -proposed enabled). [Bug 1776696] [NEW] sensible default NIC for x86? (virtio, not e1000)
Public bug reported: Booting an image that uses linux-kvm from the Ubuntu archive fails to find a network when using a minimal qemu commandline: kvm -m 256 -net nic -net user,id=user.0,hostfwd=tcp::-:22 -drive file=boot-disk.img,if=virtio -drive file=seed.iso,if=virtio, media=cdrom This fails because: -net nic[,vlan=n][,macaddr=mac][,model=type] [,name=name][,addr=addr][,vectors=v] [...] The NIC is an e1000 by default on the PC target. e1000 is a sensible least-common-denominator driver for use on a generic hypervisor, because it's old and simple and has maximum compatibility with a range of possible guest OSes. But it's clearly inferior to virtio in every other way, and I don't think we want to enable the e1000 in the linux-kvm build - I think we want people to configure their VMs to use virtio instead of e1000, which is the default in various frontends to qemu. I think anyone who is configuring a kvm instance for running Linux as a guest, and uses e1000 instead of virtio, has it misconfigured. Would it therefore make sense at this point in time to change the default NIC driver for qemu from e1000 to virtio? ** Affects: qemu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1776696 Title: sensible default NIC for x86? [Bug 1776724] [NEW] NetBeans crashes on startup
Public bug reported: When I load NetBeans (whether via the GUI or from a command line), the splash screen appears and loads as far as "Turning on modules..." (usually; very occasionally it gets stuck at "Reading module storage..." instead). The splash screen then freezes for approximately 11-12 seconds and then the entire program exits. Expected behaviour is that when I load NetBeans, the loading process finishes and then the application's main interface opens, without the process exiting. I have two JREs installed, /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk- amd64/jre/bin/java and /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java. The same behaviour of the splash screen occurs regardless of which JRE is pointed at via "/usr/bin/java". I also have two versions of javac installed, /usr/lib/jvm/java-8 -openjdk-amd64/bin/javac and /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk- amd64/bin/javac. The choice of javac that "/usr/bin/javac" points to does influence the results. I suspect that the difference is immaterial but am mentioning it just in case: * When using the Java 8 version of javac, no message is printed when NetBeans exits this way; it simply exits to the command prompt (or the desktop if loaded via the GUI) without printing anything. The exit status is 2. * When using the "java-11-openjdk-amd64" version of javac (which claims to be "javac 10.0.1" in its version info; thus I'm not clear on whether this is Java 10 or Java 11), the following messages are printed on standard output/error, before it exits with exit status 2 (I suspect these are unrelated to the crash, but including them just in case): {{{ WARNING: An illegal reflective access operation has occurred WARNING: Illegal reflective access by org.netbeans.ProxyURLStreamHandlerFactory (file:/usr/share/netbeans/platform18/lib/boot.jar) to field java.net.URL.handler WARNING: Please consider reporting this to the maintainers of org.netbeans.ProxyURLStreamHandlerFactory WARNING: Use --illegal-access=warn to enable warnings of further illegal reflective access operations WARNING: All illegal access operations will be denied in a future release }}} In an attempt to get more information about where the crash is occurring, I ran NetBeans with -J-verbose (thus causing the JVM to output which classes are loaded, perhaps indicating how far it got with initialisation before the crash); the resulting file is attached as netbeans-J-verbose.txt. Under this configuration, it consistently crashes almost immediately after loading sun.awt.X11.XSystemTrayPeer. (I've been testing with the Java 8 versions of java and javac.) This might or might not be a useful lead. Are there any tests that might give more useful information than the limited information I have here? This behaviour started immediately after an upgrade from Artful to Bionic. I'm running Cinnamon as my desktop. For example if total data transferred was (simplified) 100,000,000 Bytes, iperf would print Sum: 100 Mbytes. The suffix Mbytes is stored in a static array and it uses the number of time it had to divide the sum by 1000 to determine the index to that array. iperf only accounted for Sums up to GBytes, causing it to segfault on Sums of +TBytes. Currently the patch extends this array to Peta Bytes, but you will segfault again if the sum is in the order of Exabyte or larger. This might be achievable by using 100G connections between server-client (Mellanox 100G nic & switch) and running iperf at max throughput for a long long long periods of time. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1771283 Title: iperf2 long time run on 40Gb/s NIC crashes To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/iperf/+bug/1771283/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1772476] Re: suddenly stopped installing saying some cannot be installed....quick correction would be appreciated
Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted the installer in EFI mode. A warning message prompted you that this could be a problem and recommended performing a bios mode install instead, but you chose not to. You either need to perform the bios mode install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system partition to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you choose the "use entire disk" guided install option. ** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1772476 Title: suddenly stopped installing saying some cannot be installedquick correction would be appreciated To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/1772476/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
