[Bug 1778126] [NEW] "additional printer drivers required" dialogue appears on printer install when not needed

2018-06-21 Thread Hello Casper
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu (Studio) 18.04, when I plugged my printer in, the
printer installed without any issue (tested, confirmed working), but as
the printer was installing an additional dialogue box appeared saying
"additional printer drivers required", I pressed the button which said
to "find in software" but of course it didn't find anything, I'm not
sure why this dialogue appeared, but my printer installed fine.

Yes. When a splash screen "kubuntu" is shown the drive starts "running forever".

> even after you resume the normal boot?
No. I have tried to plug the floppy drive in rescue mode (root shell) and the
exit from the root shell and resume normal boot. The drive started "running

[Bug 1778133] [NEW] cppunit-config is missing

2018-06-21 Thread Ron Fox
Public bug reported:

Prior packagings of libcppunit-dev included cppunit-config which could
be used to determine proper compilation and link flags. (In fact this
is used by autoconf's AM_PATH_CPPUNIT to configure cppunit in auto
make).

This appears to be missing in bionic.

 daquser@bionic-beaver:~/SpecTcl/main/libtcl/exception$ cppunit-config
 cppunit-config: command not found

While e.g on 16.04 (Xenial):

 daquser@xenial:~$   cppunit-config
 Usage: cppunit-config [OPTION]...

This is printed by

Maybe you would like to install additional debug packages like
libglib2.0-0-dbgsym gstreamer1.0-plugins-base-dbg gstreamer1.0-plugins-
good-dbg libgstreamer1.0-0-dbg libfarstream-0.2-5-dbgsym

[Bug 1778134] [NEW] Switching between files in Nautilus using keyboard pointers leads to incorrectly chosen file.

2018-06-21 Thread boryslav
Public bug reported:

## Summary

Switching between files in Nautilus using keyboard pointers leads to
incorrectly chosen file.
Unfortunately I was unable to get debug log from the terminal.

## Prerequisites
Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop version is instilled, with GNOME nautilus 3.26.3,
nautilus-sendto 3.8.6.

## Steps to reproduce

1) Open nautilus (by clicking on nautilus icon, or by typing "nautilus . &" in
a terminal
2) Open a folder with many files that have similar names
(reproduced on:
* lectures with file names {1..10}-{01..20} "name of the lecture"
* pictures, with names as follows DSC{0..1}.JPG)
3) Select a file in the end of a row and press "->" (right) keyboard pointer,
to (presumably) navigate to the next row. (I also noticed, that if the issue is
not reproduced easily, zooming in/out in the folder increases the probability
of the bug)

## Actual result
If the last file in a row is selected and right pointer button is pressed on
the keyboard (sometimes) selection jumps not to the next row, but 2-5 rows
ahead.

In the screenshot attached, it jumped from a file named "2-01
Introduction.mp3" to file named "3-08 An Implicit Agreement.mp3"

# Expected result
The selection should jump to the next row, regardless of file names, zoom or
other factors.

But problem in this bugzilla is addressed. This system has buggy

So with the change we really look if Windows would have used this

[Bug 1778141] [NEW] chrony will by default step the clock instead of drifting it

2018-06-21 Thread Pedro Côrte-Real
Public bug reported:

The default /etc/chrony/chrony.conf includes:

# Step the system clock instead of slewing it if the adjustment is larger than
# one second, but only in the first three clock updates.
makestep 1 3

This is unexpected as a default for an NTP tool. Having your clock jump
forward or backwards when the service starts/restarts is not ideal in
any situation where you want a monotonic and predictable clock. I
suggest the default should be to have this line commented out.

[Bug 1778011] Re: PRIME Power Saving mode draws too much power

2018-06-21 Thread André Brait
Hey, Alberto. I have a few questions:

1. Are these changes intended to be deployed to Bionic, eventually? (I
assume yes, by the names/versions you're working on, but I wanted to
confirm this)

2. Would it make it not necessary to switch to nouveau at all? (I assume
this is why prime-select currently has to generate another initramfs,
right?)

3. Could this, along with restarting some services, make switching
without a full reboot possible? Or would that still require LightDM?

Thanks!

[Bug 1777710] Re: gpg throws out my secret keys after upgrade to 18.04

2018-06-21 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov 🌈
Is the public key, with the new expiry date, and that selfsig, imported?

Sounds like an upstream bug.

Can we replicate that bug now with fresh keys? e.g. make key past-expiry
(possibly under faketime), make subkey, extend master key expiry, export
subkeys, import subkeys, see them expired? or something like that?

Re: full screen stuff, that is mandatory usage of pinentry/gpg-agent.

  Issue identified via . A "no change
  rebuild" does not help.

- Firefox 60.0.2
- browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash 0.3.5-1ubuntu7
+ The proposed version in the PPA fixes the issue, so the wrapper works as
+ intended also with the latest FF version.
+
+ https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/freshplayerplugin
+
+ This suggests an upgrade to a newer upstream version. This is the
+ upstream changelog:
+

+
+   * release v0.3.9
+ * network: stop using files with NPN_PostURL

+ * misc: use ICU for character set conversion, use WhatWG
+   canonical encoding name conversion
+ * misc: guess default character encoding from locale name
+ * misc: guess GTK+ major version at run time
+
+ Admittedly it includes a few minor improvements, but hopefully this can
+ still pass as an SRUable microrelease (or something...).
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1. Install adobe-flashplugin and the bionic-release version of
+browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash.
+
+ 2. (Re)start Firefox and visit

+
+ 3. Install browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash from bionic-proposed.
+
+ 4. Repeat 2.
+
+ => Confirmation that the latest Flash version is installed.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Considering that the bionic-release version of browser-plugin-
+ freshplayer-pepperflash breaks Flash completely on Firefox, the risk
+ that this upload makes the situation worse is non-existent.

[Bug 1778143] [NEW] SIGSEV when turning on display while screensaver is active (gnome-screensaver-dialog crash)

2018-06-21 Thread Tobias Knöppler
Public bug reported:

Since the update to Ubuntu 18.04 (ubuntu budgie) the screensaver stopped
working.

Description of the error:

When I lock the screen, the display turns black (as intended). However, when I
press a key or move the mouse to turn the display again, no login-dialog is
shown - instead I see the lockscreen wallpaper and the mouse cursor shows
graphical glitches (becoming invisible and visible when moving it).
I can unlock again by typing `gnome-screensaver-command -d` into a tty.

I have found out, that the program 'gnome-screensaver-dialog' crashes
with a SIGSEV and causes the described failure. Purging and reinstalling
the package 'gnome-screensaver' did not help. Running 'gnome-
screensaver-dialog' with gdb generates the attached output (which is
hopefully useful for tracking down the problem).

[Bug 1778011] Re: PRIME Power Saving mode draws too much power

2018-06-21 Thread Alberto Milone
@André

1. Yes.

2. The new code doesn't involve using nouveau, or bbswitch, or
regenerating the initramfs.

3. I don't think Gdm3 allows stopping X, calling gpu-manager, and then
restarting X, as LightDm does on log out. I hope to do some work on it
in the future though.

This is pretty bad. I see 8-10 messages per second in /var/log/syslog.
That makes it difficult to see anything else, potentially causing a

[Bug 1726721] Re: package xemacs21-mule-canna-wnn 21.4.24-4ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2018-06-21 Thread Jerry A Covington
XEmacs happens to be one of my favorite text editors and I really want
to install it. The problem is that I usually install all the bells and
whistles without a problem. In this case I'd be willing to leave
something out but I don't know which item or items is causing the
problem. I'm not used to tracking down install bugs because most things
I install just work, so I need some help here.

Hello there,

Try this workaround:

In the file /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/iec958-stereo-output.conf,
ensure that its' populated as such:

```
[General]
[Element IEC958]
switch = mute
```

When done, issue a reboot.

See the new tags:

```
[General]
description = Headphones + Digital Output (S/PDIF)
```

That makes it possible for userland tools such as pavucontrol (a
pulseaudio program for configuring sound device properties) and the
sound panel to pick up the settings for the headphone and SPDIF audio
jack by adding a proper description for it as shown above.

[Bug 1746163]

2018-06-21 Thread Tempel-julian
Confirmed, an Xorg game looks fluid here in fullscreen (unfortunately
not fullscreen mode of Firefox). Thank you, so I suppose it's up to the
DE devs then.

Is it planned or possible to turn vsync entirely off for Xorg fullscreen
applications like games to e.g. have lowest input latency? I suppose
doing unwanted vsync could also interfere with FreeSync once it's there
in free driver stack one day.

(In reply to tempel.julian from comment #11)
> Is it planned or possible to turn vsync entirely off for Xorg fullscreen

This can be controlled to some degree via the usual GLX/EGL
functionality, which can be overridden via the driconf vblank_mode
setting. Beyond that, it's up to the Wayland compositor.

> I suppose doing unwanted vsync could also interfere with FreeSync

Not really. The only difference with FreeSync is that the length of the
vertical blank period can vary within bounds, other than that it works
more or less exactly the same as fixed refresh.

> once it's there in free driver stack one day.

The Wayland compositor will also have to support it.

[Bug 1746163]

2018-06-21 Thread Tempel-julian
Is there some setting that needs to be toggled first? My situation is
still the same for me as with 1.19 with KWin on Plasma 5.13. My desktop
runs with fluid 73Hz, but e.g. browsers with Xwayland are still stuttery
60fps@73Hz.

[Bug 1716654] Re: [System Product Name, Realtek ALC1220, Pink Mic, Rear] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2018-06-21 Thread Dennis Mungai Lin.Jr.
Use this workaround which disables timer-based scheduling, which is the
root cause of the glitchy audio:

PulseAudio uses timer-based audio scheduling instead of the traditional,
interrupt-driven approach by default. This tends to expose issues in
some ALSA drivers, such as this glitch (observed on a Clevo P751DM2-G
under heavy load, for instance).

To turn timer-based scheduling off add tsched=0 in
/etc/pulse/default.pa:

Edit /etc/pulse/default.pa:

```
load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
```

Then restart the PulseAudio server:

 pulseaudio -k
 pulseaudio --start

Note that if you are using Intel's IOMMU and experience glitches and/or
skips, add intel_iommu=igfx_off to your kernel command line and
regenerate the grub configuration as shown:

sudo update-grub

And reboot to test your changes.

[Bug 1778153] [NEW] Parole can't find the correct proportion for many videos

2018-06-21 Thread Leonardo Müller
Public bug reported:

I'm doing the post-install test of Xubuntu Cosmic Daily and I've noticed
that, on many videos, Parole is unable to find their correct
proportions, playing them with the proportion of the last video it found
the proportion or a square, if none was found.

It's unable to find the proportion for:

Most FLV files encoded with H264 (for one it strangely found, it's the only one
with a yuv444 color space);
MP4 files encoded with H264;
WebM files encoded with VP8 or VP9;
MKV files encoded with H264, VP8 or VP9.

It was able to find the proportion for:

WMV files encoded with WMV1.

>From my tests, I can tell there is a correlation between the files
Thunar can show thumbnails and the files Parole is able to find the
proportion: if Thunar can show the thumbnail, the proportion of the
video is correct. If Thunar can't show the thumbnail, Parole can't find
the proportion.

This bug is particularly relevant because H264, VP8 and VP9 are common
codecs.

[Bug 1778072] Re: Upgrade to libinput 1.11

2018-06-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
libinput 1.11 is soon to be released in Ubuntu 18.10:
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libinput
and it has to be released in 18.10 first before we can think about 18.04.

However I think it might be a stretch asking for it in 18.04 so soon. I
agree we do want it in 18.04 in theory but have not had time to test it
yet to see if it really does fix all the major issues and is worth the
risk.

See also bug 1767559

** Summary changed:

- [SRU or Backport][Bionic] Touchpad is imprecise for small movements, keeps
missing clicks, the cursor jumps after being stopped for a while. Upgrade to

[Bug 1775881] Re: [radeon] Every time I boot up ubuntu, the login screen looks like a static TV screen. This does not occur with other login manages, only gdm3

2018-06-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think you mean "the installation disc was able to do it
automatically".

This is expected. The reason is that the installation disk uses Xorg as
the display server so that's the same as the workaround mentioned in
comment #5.

The problem after installation is that the login screen itself defaults
to using Wayland instead of X, and so you will hit the problem there
first.

You do indeed seem to have 2 monitors plugged in.

If the LG is known to be faulty then please unplug it, and this is not a bug.

[Bug 1772271] Re: stuttering mouse movement after any shell window opens

2018-06-21 Thread Peter Buerger
I ran a bunch of configs
none of them had a very big load on the processors. gnome shell 15%pk although
eyeballing it, the stable mouse conditions look a little less(?)

natural boot: both wayland and xorg have stuttering mouse.

boot adv option: non low latency: both wayland and xorg have stable
mouse, except wayland gets 'stuck' when crossing off the background onto
the favorites bar (mine is on the bottom). The mouse is stable in both
regions, but gets hung up when crossing the border. There is no hang up
when crossing desktop icons. xorg looks better than wayland under rapid
motion and careful examination.

That isn't necessarily a crash. Maybe just a graphics bug. If you move

Please:

1. Switch to a text terminal and log in: Ctrl+Alt+F4

2. Run 'apport-collect 1778076' to automatically send us more
information.

3. As a workaround try uncommenting this line (remove the #):
 #WaylandEnable=false

Yeah, If I look closely, by moving my mouse I can see something resembling

So it might not be a crash.

To upload the logs, I need this bug to be Private first, since these are still
prototype/not-released machines.
I have informed Michael Reed (Canonical) about it.

[Bug 1772271] Re: stuttering mouse movement after any shell window opens

2018-06-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes I would expect Xorg to be slightly better right now. For reasons
unknown as yet, moving the mouse in a Wayland session forces the GPU to
redraw everything which will slow it down and stutter more. But in Xorg
sessions the mouse pointer can move freely without the GPU having to
redraw anything.

I'm surprised you see a difference with lowlatency kernels, but if it
works for you then great.

So this is a general performance bug. Even though the system is over 10
years old I think it should be performing better, but know that gnome-
shell is not yet fast enough for most machines, even new ones.

I will continue working though the lists of performance problems here:
  https://trello.com/c/Q6JYXPPs
  https://trello.com/c/pe5mRmx7
and hopefully in future we will have good enough performance to close this bug.

** Summary changed:

- stuttering mouse movement after any shell window opens

Oops. Sorry if it appeared as if I was requesting it to be implemented
soon. I know this will need extensive testing, which is partly why I
wanted to put this on the radar as soon as possible.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

No, it's not a hardware problem. It's a software problem (see the links
in comment #10).
