Seriously. What version of Kubuntu? What version of KDE? What version of Kaffeine? What packages for video codecs are installed? Do you use medibuntu? What version of the intel graphics driver? What is the exact file name? a) Xorg.0.log would be the one form the _current_ session, so it is of no use, attach .1.log for the previous (i.e. crashed session) b) basically same applies for .xsession-error, just that getting the previous is a bit more complicate. KDM doesn't require manual stopping. NSS is, KDM uses NSS so glibc suggests to restart KDM. I am still thinking about this, but in my humble opinion this is really an issue with the wording of the libc6 posinst script. It should advise to do a KDM restart _after_ the upgrade. It really doesn't make any difference if I restart it mid-upgrade or post-upgrade for KDM. Well, I am not sure. The trace files created by Apport suggest that the crash happened when trying to get access via Ice. Usually I would assume that your .ICEauthority file just got wrong permission that very time (could be caused when running GUI apps with sudo for example). It actually is intent behavior, the box exhibited in the second screenshot is a passive focus, once an item got focused it will stick with the focus (either active or passive) until you either change the focus or the directory. A passive focus basically means that you will be able to navigate with your keyboard to any item relative from the one with passive focus, where in the process of navigation an active focus gets used again.
