[Bug 1235016] [NEW] Auto display dimming shows brightness meter popup

2013-10-03 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded to the beta, when my display auto dims due to
inactivity, the pop-up brightness meter displays as if i was dimming it
manually with the keypress. It should only do this if I'm actually
pressing the key.

[Bug 462466] Re: Broadcom BCM4322 STA brcm80211 can't see wifi channels 11 (2.462GHz)

2013-06-04 Thread Mark
I am seeing this problem as well (using wl module).

from lspci -vvnn:

By deinstalling bcmwl-kernel-source, the brcmsmac module activates and I
can access channel 13. However, the connection seems to drop a lot and
(for example) I cannot watch youtube videos.

[Bug 751689] Re: ThinkPads overheat due to slow fans when on 'auto'

2012-04-15 Thread Mark
I also had this problem repeatingly with different versions of Kubuntu.
As it turns out, the reason for this, is not the fan, but rather a
problem with the intel graphics driver which is not loaded correctly. On
Kubuntu I always notice it when there is a problem to activate Desktop
Effects. Currently I am running Oneric and with Oneric adding
blacklist intel_ips to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf did the
trick. Unfortunately I do not remember where I exactly found this trick.
But it helps. Instead of having a basic 80-90 °C and sometimes more when
the overheating appeared my CPU now has between 50-60°C, sometimes more,
but overheating has not been a problem since then on my Thinkpad X201. I
guess it will be again with the next Precise release, because new
release of (K)Ubuntu always break a lot and need months until they are
stable again. But for now everything is fine. I have to add that I am
also running the Xorg-edgers ppa https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
edgers/+archive/ppa and a fresh kernel from there. But this alone did
not help. Since I have lost the source of my information, I do not know
if I forgot something, but I believe that is all.

[Bug 1166525] [NEW] There is no way in Rhythmbox to refresh renamed/updated tags of songs. The old tag remains.

2013-04-08 Thread Mark

After changing the names of the ID3 tags the updates don't show up in
Rhythmbox. There should at least be an easy graphical way to
reload/update the library, or better yet, have it detect changes
automatically. I have to do it manually by deleting
~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml every time I edit a tag of a song.

[Bug 1087534] Re: [regression] Corrupted blurred overlays

2013-04-10 Thread Mark
I confirm that the method of Florian works. It's the same command as Unity
Tweak uses with 'background blur'.
If it is possible, and nothing would break, why wouldn't you deactivate blur by
default? Otherwise, you can disable all intel video cards blur..
As Frantisek indicates, this is against the words of Mark Shuttleworth. Because
it is not one operating system anymore for all different devices. ;)

[Bug 963736] Re: thunderbird freezes at random : must be killed and reload

2013-05-02 Thread Mark
Same for me, everything ran great until I upgrade to Raring from 12.x

Firefox 20.0, Thunderbird 17.0.5

The only thing I recall about upgrading is that new nVidia drivers were
install during the upgrade.

I was not using Oxygen GTK theme, I was using the Air Black Remix for
Window Decorations and Glassified for desktop theme.

Switched both anyway to see if that helps.

[Bug 628657] Re: freezes for 10s when displaying long changelogs

2013-05-14 Thread Mark
The effects of this bug became more annoying with recent update-manager
versions.

Starting with Ubuntu 13.04, update-manager (Software Updater) was
changed so that package names are no longer shown in the list. Only a
one-line summary is shown, but sometimes that gives no clue as to what
the package actually is; e.g. the summary could be something like
Transitional dummy package.

In order to show package names, you have to click Technical description,
then on the Changes tab. As you click on each item in the list, you have
to wait for the changelog to display, which takes ages and maxes out the
CPU for longer changelogs (e.g. for new kernel versions). [Since 13.04
was only released recently however, currently most changelogs are quite
short. Later in the cycle as changelogs get longer, that this will
become more of a problem.]

Ok more tests. With the Oxygen theme I get the lockups. When I switch
GTK-2 to Raleigh and GTK-3 to Emacs the lockups go away. But I'm stuck

Emacs theme reminds us of Windows 3.0 what a horrific memory !

@Marcus:
I confirm mv file and open keeps the filled in data. (Note difference between
Save as.., and Save a copy)

Backends here:

$ pacman -Qs poppler
local/poppler 0.22.2-1
PDF rendering library based on xpdf 3.0
$ pacman -Qs ghostscript

ghostscript is mentioned in Okular as backend.

[Bug 1100970] Re: [gen3] Dash background flickers on intel graphics

2013-03-15 Thread Mark
Adolfo thanks for your correction.

I may have found something interesting. In the link is a movie where I make a
partition smaller. When I open the dash, it flashes quickly, while i'm not
typing anything.

[Bug 1085398] [NEW] users-admin Advanced Settings window is too tall

2012-12-01 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

I'm testing Lubuntu 12.10 in a VirtualBox VM. The Desktop size is
1024x768 pixels.

Run users-admin (System Tools - Users and Groups). The Users Settings
window opens. Click Advanced Settings to open the Changed Advanced User
Settings window. It is too tall to fit on the screen and the Cancel and
OK buttons are off the bottom edge. The window doesn't need to be that
tall (there's just empty space between the content and Cancel/OK
buttons) and it's impossible for the user to reduce its height.

I'd suggest fixing this so the window is fully usable even at 800x600
resolution.

** Affects: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I also couldn't find any Nux lines. If there is a command or trick to do
that, I will try. This is glxinfo output:

Hmmm, I was fairly sure I added the PPA, it's in my sources.list. I did
another apt-get update and dist-upgrade this morning though and the Xorg
build date didn't change, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I can
tarball up the Xorg.0.logs as they are if you wish but I'm not sure if they
would be of any use to you?

Having said all that, the problem for me has gone away since 1st March. Up
to that I was getting the (to paraphrase) running in low res modeerror
most of the time on start up. I wonder would my dpkg log from that date be
of any use to you?

Re: [Bug 982889] Re: X trying to start before plymouth has finished using the drm driver

2013-03-03 Thread Mark
All 5 boots produced a usable X session. I haven't had a problem booting up
successfully since the 1st. By cold boot I just mean a normal power on
after a normal power off. In actual fact I haven't had to do a hard reset
(or manually hold down the power button to power off and then power on
again), with my current setup at all since the 1st of March, and even then
it was rare that I would have to have done it before that. And just to go
off topic a bit I find it amazing how quickly it does shut down, in
seconds, it's really cool!

cold boots, the last one is a reboot.

Aha, perfect. So, it looks like the bug hit on boots 2, 3 and 4, the
patch took effect and delayed the boot for 12 sec or so waiting on drm.
There is the setversion 1.4 failed (which is the thing we're trying to
avoid), but the rest of the log looks otherwise normal.

Can you confirm whether boots 2, 3, 4 produced a usable X session or if
it froze or crashed or something? By 'cold boot' do you mean you had to
manually power cycle (hold down the power button)?

If boots 2,3,4 worked, then I think we're golden. If not, then back to
the drawing board... maybe we need ickle's advice on what to look at next.

[Bug 775124] Re: Ubiquity should have a command line option to override the free space check

2013-02-08 Thread Mark
I wanted to install Lubuntu 12.10 to a 4GB USB flash drive, but the
12.10 installer refuses to work if the disk size is less than 4.4GB.
That's a problem because Lubuntu would actually install fine on a 4GB
USB drive, especially if the user chooses to not create a swap
partition. But the installer doesn't let the user get past the I won't
install on a 4.4GB disk stage.

It's perfectly feasible to install Lubuntu to a 4GB flash drive; there
would about 2GB free space after installation with no swap partition.

Some suggestions:
 - Reduce the minimum allowable disk size and make it a recommendation, not
mandatory.
 - When working out whether the drive is large enough for Lubuntu to be
installed, take into account the size of any swap partition. Perhaps show a
warning dialog if the user proceeds with a small drive, but don't prevent
installation completely.

Here are some space-used figures after I installed Lubuntu 12.10 to a
4.4GB VirtualBox VM:

Filesystem 1K-blocksUsed Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda13766504 1911200 1663972 54% /

Device StartEnd Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 2048 7655423 3826688 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 7657470 9226239 784385 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 7657472 9226239 784384 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Note the swap size! With no swap partition there would be almost 2.5GB
of free space. There would therefore be over 2GB of free space after
installing to a 4GB USB stick/memory card, if the installer allowed it.
That's plenty for light usage.

[Bug 1095847] Re: no GUI method for managing webapps

2013-03-11 Thread Mark
This is still a important bug when using webapps. Maybe it's a good idea
to merge online accounts and webapps together.

This can be done with a tab in 'online accounts'.
Or add firefox or chromium in the application list wich is used with an account.

[Bug 993117] Re: Dual monitor setup stops mouse from switching screens in Ubuntu 12.04

2012-05-05 Thread Mark
It probably isn't stuck. You just need to force it to the other
monitor. You can change a setting to make it like you expect.

Open the CompizConfig Settings Manager (or install it if you don't have
it) - go to Ubuntu Unity Plugin (again, you may need to install this if
you don't have it) - Experimental Tab. At the bottom uncheck Launcher
Capture Mouse.

[Bug 1266542] [NEW] Evince fails to display some PostScript files correctly

2014-01-06 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

I'm using Evince 3.10.0 in a Lubuntu 13.10 x86 VirtualBox VM.

Certain PostScript files fail to render correctly in Evince.

See the attached example document. It has three pages but when loaded into
Evince only the last page is shown, upside-down.
At that point Evince reports:
(evince:2829): EvinceDocument-CRITICAL **: ev_document_get_n_pages: assertion
'EV_IS_DOCUMENT (document)' failed

If I then choose Rotate Left the displayed page disappears. Evince reports:
(evince:2829): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_get_from_surface: assertion 'width
0 height 0' failed
(evince:2829): Gtk-WARNING **: drawing failure for widget `EvView': invalid
matrix (not invertible)
(evince:2829): Gtk-WARNING **: drawing failure for widget `EvView': invalid
matrix (not invertible)

Clicking Rotate Left again causes the document to be displayed upside-
down again.

If I convert the PostScript file to PDF (by doing ps2pdfwr filename.ps
filename.pdf), the PDF document does display correctly in Evince.

[Bug 751689] Re: [Lenovo Thinkpad x201s] Overheat due to slow fans when on 'auto'

2014-01-07 Thread Mark
For me the issue is fixed in Saucy, by doing a few things. I am not sure if it
is the combination or one of them did the trick:
- Installing: intel-microcode - Update of the CPU-Firmware
- running thinfan with the attached configuration (note: you must look for more
detailed installation instructions on the net, the sensor settings are for a
X201 only. You need to adjust them for other machines)
- installing i965-va-driver
- I also have updated my Bios to the latest version. But this was a while ago
and did not help. But it may contribute to it.

Before that I had an average temperature of 80 and quite often sudden
peaks leading to 100 and a shutdown. Now I have a permanent temperature
below 60 and only a few peeks above. What I am sure of is that it did
not help to have thinkfan installed, did not help alone.

I have to note that I am running a x201 and have an SSD. Switching from
a hardrive to SSD did not change a thing. So I assume this solution
works also with a harddrive.

Before having this solution it helped to remove the battery to prevent
the overheating from happening.

[Bug 1250196] Re: sane plustek backend not working on USB 3 root hub

2013-12-23 Thread Mark
I have a CanoScan LiDE 20 which worked fine unless i got a new notebook
with usb 3.0 although the scanner is well recognized. I have been
testing with kubuntu 12.04 and kubuntu 13.10. With both the scanner
works with the old usb 2.0 notebook and does not with the new one.

The new notebook claims to also have usb 2.0, but it does not matter
where i put the scanner in.

Ok more tests. With the Oxygen theme I get the lockups. When I switch

using themes that are, uh, just a bit too 1990's for my tastes - LOL.

The problem is in the udev driver. Updating the driver to the newest
version vill solve the problem. (Need to compile manually..)

[Bug 1197786] Re: flickrfs won't list sets and therefore stops working

2013-09-04 Thread mark
Andrius' fix stopped the hanging after an ls on the ~/Flickr dir, but
flickrfs still did not sync any sets. Tried on 12.10 and 13.04. Both
x64. Attached is my log file in case it helps. With Flickr now giving
1TB free, I imagine there's quite a few people looking to sync their
entire collection so it's def worthwhile fixing this if someone with the
knowledge would be good enough to have a go.

[Bug 1159513] Re: Banshee freezes on copying to iPod music which needs transcoding

2013-06-30 Thread mark
Yes! I have given 2.6.1-1ubuntu1.2 a decent workover and cannot find any
regressions. Transcoding is very stable.
Tks Ubuntu and Chow Loong Jin - with the USB interface improvements and this
Banshee fix I now have full portability for my music collection across any
device. This is something I have never been able to do in Linux . A major step
forward. Thank you very much :)

[Bug 1035755] Re: [firefox] Extension causes context/drop down menus to disappear

2013-07-02 Thread Mark
Since my update to Firefox 22.0+build2-0ubuntu0.13.04.2~ppa1 a few days
ago the bug has returned (running Kubuntu Raring). There may be another
cause that I am not aware of.

libdbusmenu-qt2 and libdbusmenu-qt2:i386 are on
0.9.2daily13.03.28-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 1207538] [NEW] misrendering of SVG files (clipping paths)

2013-08-01 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

Generating an SVG file using matplotlib,

from pylab import *

x = linspace(0,2,101)
plot(x,x)
xlim(0,1)
savefig('test.svg')

gives the SVG file attached. This file views fine in Inkscape, Firefox,
Chromium. However in Ristretto the blue line is not clipped properly and
extends past the right side of the plot. The file's XML is pretty
simple, with just one clip rectangle.

It seems there are a few image viewers with this problem including
Ristretto but also gpicview, comix, gthumb. I'm not sure why they all
share this issue (same library?). I'll submit the bug report here in
hopes it gets forwarded upstream to the right place.

[Bug 1159513] Re: Banshee freezes on copying to iPod music which needs transcoding

2013-06-27 Thread mark
Well, I was previously unable to transcode anything in 13.04x64 and
2.6.1. Having shouted at GStreamer for a few weeks I enabled proposed
updates just now and I confirm it works on both my Galaxy Note GT-N7000
and several USB .is_audio_player enabled sticks using Mass Storage. Only
issue appears that whilst it does actually transfer and transcode all
the tracks - it appears not to stop. The lower left hand indicator still
continues. However, just starting another sync seems to push off the
previous one and all is well.

Thanks.

[Bug 1062600] [NEW] please update package so it fixes Skype account no longer shows

2012-10-05 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

There is a bug in the package with is already fixed upstream, although
there is no release. The bug prevents skype to be show on empathy and
also Telepathy KDE which makes the packages pretty useless.

https://code.google.com/p/skype4pidgin/issues/detail?id=193

It would be great if a newer version of the package could be uploaded
for the release of quantal, but also precise.

Yes, selecting Mark for Complete Removal after already selecting Mark
for Removal does work correctly.

The bug is that after selecting Mark for Complete Removal, selecting
Mark for Removal does nothing (the status remains at Mark for Complete
Removal, in other words).

[Bug 944251] Re: Unwanted secret outbound connection

2012-12-07 Thread mark
Guys,

Just block the traffic altogether. You should be doing that anyway.
Its just good security practice.

On your ubuntu, linux, solaris server or whatever just blackhole all the
traffic.

Example:

In Ubuntu just type the command:

sudo ip route add blackhole 91.0.0.0/8

You can verify this with the
route -n command. Now start blocking tons of traffic. There are different
ways to block traffic but this is my favorite. No messages are sent back such
as unreachables as with reject messages. Think about it for a second. If you
send a reject message such as destination unreachable then didn't I just find
out that there is a live device somewhere? Who cares if the icmp was
successful or not. My whole point was network reconnaissance. So black hole
all of your traffic and hide in the shadows :-)

Here in the US I block all IP subnets out side of my country such as
Russia, China and so forth. If there is a specific need then you can
simply unblock the traffic when desired.
