[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2007-10-08 Thread Martin
/me starts lurking around at [EMAIL PROTECTED] :)

Another question. Do any of the other indexers out there work around
this problem somehow? And if so, how?

I mean, the problem is many small write():s and blocks being allocated
directly during write() instead of at page flush time, right? Can't you
merge several write operations together? Or maybe you already do that
"1000-5000 words at a time"? If not, could the on disk format be changed
to allow for merging several write():s together?

Also, is it really necessary to fsync() so often?

[Bug 61851] Re: don't demand CD even though it's in sources.list

2007-10-13 Thread Martin
"Since the cd will only appear, if the system was installed with the
packages from the alternate cdrom"

So... I don't follow you here... A "normal" installation will not prompt
for the CD? If it doesn't, please ignore the rest of this entry.

"It could be annoying for dial-up.users if we would trigger the internet
connection every time."

Well, now it's annoying for people with fast internet connections who
have to insert the CD every time even though there's really no reason
for them whatsovever to do so. Not all of those people will know they
should go to System>Administration>Software Sources etc etc.

Maybe an additional choice can be added to the dialog that prompts for
the installation CD? <"Look for all software on the Internet"> which
automatically removes the CD from the source list.

[Bug 140644] Re: xset fails to turn off LCD screen

2007-10-26 Thread Martin
I've got a Fujitsu Siemens C1410 with intel graphics, and I've set the
power-manager to turn the screen off after 6 minutes. Sometimes the
screen turns black (backlight still on) and sometimes the screen doesn't
even turn black. This started when upgrading to Gutsy. On my other
computer (VIA EPIA) the problem that the power-manager doesn't always
shut down the screen also exists.

[Bug 158040] Re: tracker doesn't leave any for the rest of the class

2007-10-29 Thread Martin
Jamie,

That sounds great! I've been pretty peeved about inotify:s lack of
built-in recursive directory monitoring. A ring buffer of all file
changes would solve that one automatically... and the max_user_watches
problem to boot. :)

Only hope you can get it accepted upstream...

Yes, I know. But it is fixable (reparent to a window as large as the

So... it is still a "bug" and should be kept open until it is fixed in
Compiz and Ubuntu can change mode. (Having this fixed in Compiz won't
automatically mean that Ubuntu's defaults will change.)

I wonder if even kernel hackers know enough to not follow fscks
suggestions... seriously...

like that is displayed:

Why not just run "automatic recovery". I don't really see mere mortals
doing anything else. It might be interesting for filesystem developers
doing some sort of debugging. But if you're a filesystem developer, you
can set up your system to not run fsck automatically anyhow.

If a question is to be put on the screen, I suggest making it timeout
after a couple of seconds. But I really don't see the point in asking at
all.

[Bug 132151] Re: "Edit as new" constantly greyed out

2007-08-14 Thread Martin

have locally in the sent mail folders seem to work with "Edit as new",
but not the ones in my IMAP folders.

Ah, I am using search folders, and when I went directly to the e-mail
accounts sent folder it was ok. But in my search folder which compiles
messages from all my accounts sent mail folder it does not work. Could
you try that as well?

[Bug 114079] Re: GstFFMpegCsp: subclass did not specify output size

2007-08-20 Thread martin
I'm using 7.04, and I regularly see this error. It is especially
annoying since the firefox-plugin doesn't show the error, but just won't
work. I could give you a dozen of movies where the error pops up now and
then, but that won't really help: most of the time, when retrying, it
works.

[Bug 128690] Disable automatic resizing by default

2007-07-27 Thread Martin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

What's the rationale for having automatic resizing enabled by default? I
find it quite disruptive having the window "jump around" like that. My
guess is that most users feel that way too. I don't know, moving
controls and elements around without user initiation... is bad in
general... I guess... most of the time...

Also, Totem upstream doesn't do it. Fixing this would decrease the diff
against upstream. :)

[Bug 128690] Re: Disable automatic resizing by default

2007-07-27 Thread Martin
Well... it's not about keeping everybody happy.

Moving controls around in a, to the user, seemingly random order just
because someone who knows about video resolution complains that high
resolution videos will be played in a very small window... that's just
silly.

Having the initial window size depend on the video resolution...
maybe... I guess that's a compromise that might "keep everybody happy".

2007-07-29 Thread Martin
Initial window size depend on the video resolution is probably bad too
btw. Just let user's watch videos in the size they prefer. :)

Perhaps the problem is that Totem's default window size is too small?
Perhaps it could be set to something like 2/3 of the screen size instead
of 466x436? (Video nerds who are in to techno bable like resolution,
high-definition video and what not shouldn't be too disapointed... and
if they happen to stumble upon a small video... so what, scaling is soo
good that it probably doesn't matter.)

RE: [Bug 140776] Re: thumnails konqueror

2007-09-18 Thread Martin
Hello,

storing thumbnails should be an option choosable by the user in the konqueror
property sheet. Of course the data are readable by any administrator. The other
thing is that a huge amount of storage is wasted. Therefore the storage should
be limited by an option let's say for example 5MB. Alternativly the user can
create a tmpfs file system in the RAM and link .thumbnails to this place.
Another thing is that any user data stored on the hd, which is not controlled
by the user is security vulnerabilty where somebody can attack (see the

[Bug 71560] Re: Crash information collection depletes resources, clogs up and crashes system

2007-12-08 Thread Martin
This is still a big problem in Gutsy. I have never, repeat _NEVER_, let
apport finished running.

When an application crashes the cpu spikes to 100% and the whole system
becomes unresponsive. After a few seconds I usually manage to do a
"killall apport" and everything is peachy again. It never fails.

I'm surprised apport is even enabled in this state... :/ It's bad enough
that an app has crashed, but why effecively bring the whole system to a
crawl?

[Bug 160394] Re: network manager unable to switch between wired and wireless connections

2007-12-12 Thread Martin
I've got the same problem with network-manager. I'm on Kubuntu, and I'm
using it with the Knetworkmanager applet.

Selecting a wireless network from the list won't get me a connection.
Knetworkmanager says "Connection failure", and re-connects to the wired
connection.

However, unplugging the LAN cord causes network-manager to get connect
to wireless instantly (often but not always).

I'm attaching /var/log/syslog and dmesg for the timeframe of the event
(choosing wireless network (eth1) in knetworkmanager, while the LAN cord
is connected).

[Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.3

2008-01-29 Thread Martin
"If anyone is contributing to this task, they should join forces with

So, since the Debian import freeze came and went a long time ago and
feature freeze is just two weeks away... no 3.3 in Hardy then... most
likely. :(

And downloading and running from the website doesn't work (I've
forgotten what the error was for me in Hardy and I'm back in Gutsy now).
Oh well.

[Bug 172651] Re: Can't run screen in Gutsy

2007-11-28 Thread Martin
I'm running a fully updated Gutsy install.

Did mkdir /var/run/screen dir, chmod 775 and chgrp to utmp. Don't see
any point in doing "sudo screen" after that. :) (Fixed it before filing
the bug.) I also have screen instances running right now so deleting the
dir right now isn't an option.

It's quite obvious what the problem is though, /var/run/screen wasn't
created at install time... right?

Well, it's obvious that /var/run/screen can't be created when screen is
run (as !root) so it must be created before that. At boot? At install
time? Don't know. But yes, if it is supposed to be created by some init
script, and isn't, perhaps finding the bug in that script ain't so
obvious...

Though I was actually wondering more about getting this working without

having a package in the first place is a step in that direction. :) (I

Hi,

since my upgrade of the kernel to 2.6.22-14.47 adept didn't crash anymore. May
be that's related to the kernel or other upgrades. I will monitor this
problem and report asap. Synaptic I used with Feisty, but 'I don't have
installed yet under gutsy. Apt-get or aptitude I'm using rarely, only if some
other people tell how to use.

The internet connection is indeed a strange probleme, because everytime I'm
opening adept related software, internet connection will break and I have to
wait about more then one minute to establish it again. Sometime it helps to
call my router via ip address, so it seems the DHCP is lost.

bye,
Martin

[Bug 198695] [NEW] [mplayer] major annoyances with pop-up error messages

2008-03-05 Thread martin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

I would like to request the removal of the graphical error messages from
MPlayer that are apparently enabled by default in Ubuntu. It seems that
everything that normally would go to the console is presented via a pop-
up GUI-window instead when using the Ubuntu .deb package provided in
Hardy.

Example of these error messages are incomplete avi/sync errors, random codec
messages (file plays fine, but displays "j-type picture is not supported"
during given intervals)
The most common are "header damaged" pop-ups which would be displayed a
gazillion times for incomplete files that do play, but obviously this causes
them to slow down.

The problem is that all these errors all have to be acknowledged
individually by clicking/dismissing them in order to continue watching
the file. Since I've unsuccessfully scoured the MPlayer options and the
web for ways to disable these, I can only conclude that they are enabled
at compile-time. I've not seen this behaviour on other distros such as
Gentoo, Fedora or RedHat.
