[Bug 155619] I cannot set my screen resolution above [EMAIL PROTECTED] although my HW supports much better.

2007-10-21 Thread Nick
Public bug reported:

I have just installed. At Ubuntu's prompt, I installed the Nvidia
driver provided by the "wizard". (I really just sat and watched after
clicking OK)

During my installation, I found the prompts near impossible to follow
because Ubuntu chose 800x600 which cut off the buttons at the bottom of
each window. I only managed to install by shrinking the fonts and
moving the top and bottom menu bars to the sides of the screen.

Since installation of the Nvidia driver, the resolution panel offers me
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] My eyes are in pain as I type.

I am using a Samsung 900nf CRT monitor (recognized by Ubuntu) capable of
resolutions above 1600x1200.

GPU is an integrated 6150 on an ASUS AMD board A8N-VM-CSM (I think) also
capable of res above 640.

I am new to linux and ubuntu so I am sorry if I have somehow missed
something but I have tried quite hard to solve this and Ubuntu asked me
if I wanted to report a "problem" so here we are.

This is the full release of Ubuntu 7.10 for AMD 64 if that wasn't
already clear.

Is there more info I could provide?

Thank you,

Nick Syperek

2007-10-21 Thread Nick
Thanks. I was unsure. I could only have called it Ubuntu. I will look
into the link you sent.

I am really hoping to explore Ubuntu after hearing so much about it.
50hz is very hard to bear though.

thanks again,

Nick

2007-10-21 Thread Nick
My apologies for the messy addition above.

The problem is manifest in the main "desktop" portion of the Ubuntu experience
but during the boot process, the screen resolution appears much higher for the
Ubuntu logo.
I will try uninstalling the Nvidia driver.

[Bug 144985] displayconfig-gtk crashed with IndexError in isResolutionSettingsChanged()

[Bug 216630] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64 2.6.24-16-generic nvidia restricted kernel module fails to load

2008-04-19 Thread Nick
Yes! Running "sudo depmod" worked for me as well!

For it to work, I booted to the troubled kernel, this case:
2.6.24-16-generic. After I got the "low graphic mode" screen in Gnome,
I switched to one of the text consoles by pressing CTRLl + ALT + F2. I
logged in and ran:

$ sudo depmod

$

I got no output. I guess that means it worked.

I rebooted and everything is good!

[Bug 224142] [NEW] gnome_url_show says some evolution email links invalid

2008-04-29 Thread Nick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Clicking on certain links in emails displayed with evolution produces
the following message:

(evolution:17176): evolution-mail-WARNING **: gnome_url_show: The
specified location is invalid.

Examples of URLs that don't work:

finance.yahoo.com
lwn.net

Other URLs in the same email work perfectly fine. For example:

http://finance.yahoo.com
http://lwn.net
www.yahoo.com
www.lwn.net

So it seams that gnome_url_show is not very lenient when it comes to
deciding if a URL is valid or not. I was expecting it to simply open a
firefox window/tab with the link.

One further note is that my evolution is connected to an exchange server
via owa. Outlook in Vista happily opens these urls without complaint.

[Bug 224564] [NEW] Intel 3945 wireless card not working in Hardy Herron

2008-04-30 Thread Nick
Public bug reported:

I previously had 7.10 installed and my card was detected and the
installer asked if I would like to use a restricted driver which I did
and it worked perfectly including wireless light. However in 8.04 I
believe its now using a different kernel module which doesnt seem to
work - I get no network light and no wireless points listed in network
manager and am unable to use wireless.

Not sure what you need me to paste as with regards to reports so please
let me know and I will upload them asap.

2008-05-11 Thread Nick
Thank you.

I actually had manually uninstalled python-irclib (apt-get remove), to get
the upgrade to Hardy Heron to continue.
And then when I tried your suggestion, doing a manual install, and was
informed that I already had the latest
release.

Thank you.

[Bug 140524] gnome-settings-daemon keeps failing on start

2007-09-17 Thread nick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Im on a Dell xps M1330

With the last update of the gutsy round of packages gnome-settings-
daemon wont start. this started this morning sep 17.

I tried restarting it to see if any error message would pop-up and this
is what i got

$ sudo gnome-settings-daemon

The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.

backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

to zoom in have not had any success. If i try to type i can see hat
appears to be a pixel moving across the screen, which im assuming is the
curser.

Im working on the new dell xps m1330 if that helps with anything.

[Bug 140572] Gutsy Screen Birghtness using function keys Dell M1330

2007-09-17 Thread nick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Currently im working on a Dell xps M1330

The function keys to increase brightness are not working. I am able to
decrease the brightness at any point but to bring it back is not
possible. The screen does return to its brightness when i have left it
idle and then start using it again. This is a setting in the power-
management section that was changed.

The function keys were working before but this mornings round of patches
broke it.

thanks for all the help guys!!!

[Bug 162381] azureus crashed when I try to start it (Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy))

2007-11-13 Thread nick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: azureus

When I run azureus from applications menu, it crashes without any error report.
I have removed the azureus package and all packages that depends on it with

   apt-get --purge remove azureus
   apt-get --purge autoremove
This must result in resetting configuration of azureus packages, but when I
reinstall azureus I get the same crash.
When I try to start azureus from command line and get following:

2007-11-13 Thread nick
Removing "~/.azureus/logs/save" (as it is recommended with similar bug)
does not help, but when I have removed the whole directory "~/.azureus"
it will start normally. The question is why "apt-get --purge azureus"
does not remove this directory?

[Bug 175449] Re: Eye of Gnome print fails

2008-01-31 Thread Nick
After more testing I can say that Foomatic/hpijs (another included
printer driver that supports the Brother HL-5050) works fine. The
problem only happens when the Foomatic/Postscript driver is used. Is
the problem with the Postscript driver, my Brother printer or with
Gnome?

The answer isn't clear to me.

What is clear to me is that the Default/Recommended setup for Ubuntu in
this case is faulty and will continue to affect users if not fixed.
I'll be glad to continue to test and/or provide information but it isn't
clear to me if this bug is being worked and if so, by who?

[Bug 156648] Re: Error printing PDF files

2008-02-01 Thread Nick
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 175449 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/175449

Questions for the OP:

What printer driver are you using? Foomatic/Postscript ?

What program are you printing with? Evince ?

What printer are you using? Brother laser (mine is a HL-5050) ?

With the above combination I see exactly what is being reported.

If I change the driver or program I am using then printing works:

If I print with Adobe reader instead of Evince, it works fine.

If I change the printer driver to Footmatic/hpijs, it works fine.

2008-02-01 Thread Nick
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 175449 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/175449

BullCreek,

Thanks for the reply. I've researched as I've had time for a couple of
months. I've known this bug existed for a couple of years.

Everytime I find someone reporting a problem like this the person is
using a Brother printer with the Postscript printer and it only shows up
when trying to print with EoG or Evince. Hopefully this issue will be
fixed soon.

I saw messages about fixing this issue by using the Brother driver but
Brother's site isn't clear about how to do that. I've been to Brother's
site but it appeared to me there were 2 different drivers and I didn't
know which one to use and the installation instructions were far from
clear.

[Bug 185364] kde fails to init after updates (hardy alpha 3)

2008-01-23 Thread Nick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-core

After a fresh alpha-3 install (kubuntu, kde3), on a Dell 6400, Radeon
x1400 video, KDE works fine. I apt-get the fglrx-driver and modify my
xorg.conf for the driver and desired resolution. Re-boot and all is
still fine. KDE only breaks after I allow the updates to occur.

I'm at a different computer now (XP) so I have to use my old wetware
memory to describe the crash:

KDE starts and gets as far as the second init token. It sits there for a
long time, and then I'm back to the login screen. If I do a failsafe
session, and manually do a startkde, I get a message about not being
able to run kmserver.

Booting with the original alpha-3 kernel does not solve the problem.

If I install the gnome desktop, it works *partially*, but title bars and
associated windows decorations, including the ability to move windows,
are missing.

this is also a problem on the dell m1330 laptop model as well. fn+up

changes are possible with no irregularities. This change though happened
not on 9/18 as previously mentioned but on 9/17´s round of updates.

[Bug 175449] Re: Eye of Gnome print fails

2007-12-20 Thread Nick
I have what appears to be the same problem. This is not a new problem
in that I can remember it all the way back to at least Edgy. I'm just
now getting around to reporting it. It has recently become more
important to my work and I would like to see this fixed. Here are my
details:

Binary package hint: eog

Gutsy 32 bit on Intel P4 based system using eog 2.20.1. When you try to
print any file using a Brother HL-5050 results in the following error
being printed:

ERROR NAME: ioerror
COMMAND: fill
OPERAND STACK:

The exact same images print perfectly fine using Gimp, Openoffice,
Firefox or by any other means. I am using the foomatic/postscipt driver
(recommended) and the printer is on parallel:/dev/lp0.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: Intel P4 Northwood (32 bit)
Date: Thu Dec 20 11:05:00 2007
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 7.10 (32 bit)

The one thing that really caught my eye is that the OP and I are both
using Brother printers.

I'll try to provide additional information on request.

I reported this problem upstream with Gnome:

It appears this problem is with gtk+ and is not specific to eog.

[Bug 105490] Re: [Feisty] Swap partition receives new UUID

2007-06-17 Thread Nick
I've confirmed this problem on multiple systems with Fiesty and Gutsy.
I've followed the recommendations above but have been unable to get the
Swap UUID to stick. I've searched the forums, the internet and here.
My conclusion is that this problem is at the root of many reported
problems.

This problem kills hibernate capability.

Request that the priority be bumped to HIGH.

[Bug 105490] Re: [Feisty] Swap partition receives new UUID

2007-06-17 Thread Nick
After much searching, reading and testing I now have hibernate and Swap
going reliably on one system. I'll test this on other systems as I have
time. I realize this is not the fix we really need but at least it
works for now here:

Fiesty Swap/hibernate fix:

- Check swap: $ free | grep Swap

If you see the follow then your Swap file is broken:

  Swap:0 0 0

- Find the device name of swap: $ sudo fdisk -l

UUID support appears to be broken as far as the Swap is concerned.

- Edit fstab with correct non-UUID information: $ sudo gedit /etc/fstab

- Edit resume with correct non-UUID information:$ sudo gedit
/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume

  Example: RESUME=/dev/sda6

- sudo update-initramfs -u

- Reboot

- Check swap if you want: $ free | grep Swap

- Open some apps

- Test hibernate

I backed up my home directory with Ubuntu 7.10 to a NAS. I just

[Bug 209314] Re: Crash "No Such File Or Directory"

2008-03-30 Thread Nick
This is NOT a bug, it turns out that the created archive was corrupt.

Manually trying to extract the archive gave me a "unexpected end of
file" on the files.tgz that sbackup made. Looking closer at it's size,
files.tgz was exactly 2147483647, 1 byte short of 2GB. I bet this
failure occurs when the archive is not extracted and there are no files
to copy to the proper location.

So perhaps the real bug is that sbackup is unable to create tgz files
larger that 2GB?

Maybe I didn't notice my backup failed on Ubuntu 7.10 when I created it.
sbackup did successfully create an incremental backup using the "full"
backup. I bet sbackup doesn't even check files.tgz when doing an
incremental, but just checks what file versions have changed by looking
at flist or something.

So, the real bug is that sbackup is unable to create tgz files larger
that 2GB!

[Bug 152206] Re: Intel 965G (GMA X3000) - Video Tearing Effect & Poor Performance

2008-03-09 Thread Nick
Hi there, i tried to apply these patches as well but i'm not sure if it
worked after all. Applying the patch using the patch command wouldn't
work so i altered the original files manually. I compiled the driver

textured video. Could someone have a look at my Xorg.0.log and let me
know if the patch worked?

[Bug 88905] Re: No hardware rendering for "SuperSavage/IXC 64" and "Xorg 7.2"

2007-05-28 Thread Nick
The subject video chipset is the one used in the entire Thinkpad T2x
series. This was a very popular line and the systems are powerful
enough to still be in widespread use. A quick search of the forums
shows this bug is causing a lot of questions. I've reverted my wife's
T23 back to Windows 2000 because I don't have much hope of this bug
being fixed very soon given the LOW priority that it is assigned.

[Bug 95446] Re: Beryl does not work with ATI when fglrx is installed

2007-04-18 Thread Nick
Not a bug in beryl; installing fglrx is breaking your hardware
acceleration somewhere, possibly by diverting libGL.so ?

Obvious solution is to make xorg-driver-fglrx and xserver-xorg-driver-
ati conflict with each other, if they can't behave well together.

[Bug 68454] rutilt_0.12-0ubuntu1 fails to build on Ubuntu's build servers...

2006-10-26 Thread Nick
Public bug reported:

...this is because they run absurdly old kernels ;)

An example:-
http://librarian.launchpad.net/4923206/buildlog_ubuntu-edgy-i386.rutilt_0.12-0ubuntu1_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz

"
# Add here commands to configure the package.
./configure.sh --prefix=/build/buildd/rutilt-0.12/debian/rutilt/usr
--kernel_sources=/usr/src/linux-headers-`uname -r| cut -d- -f1,2`
Prefix set to : /build/buildd/rutilt-0.12/debian/rutilt/usr

Your kernel sources cannot be found.
Kernel headers found...
They does not match your running kernel.
make: *** [configure-stamp] Error 1
**
"

As-is, the package just grabs the latest version of the headers and
builds against them. Note that rutilt runs absolutely fine, no matter
what it's built against, as long as the wireless extensions are above
v17 or so (which they are, of course).

The solution should be to comment out lines 124-127 inclusive in the
configure.sh file - this can easily be done with dpatch... they are:
if [ `grep "#define UTS_RELEASE" /usr/include/linux/version.h | tr
-s '\t' ' ' | cut -d' ' -f3 | tr -d '"'` != `uname -r` ]; then
echo 'They does not match your running kernel.'
exit 1

Surely that depends on the MP3 player? iPod and iRivier, yes, because they
contain a hard drive. All my MP3 players use solid-state storage, however -

[Bug 86307] Re: Weird behaviour with Beryl.

2007-03-31 Thread Nick
The behaviour I'm seeing here is that when FSP is set to "High" or
"Extreme", invoking yakuake with F12 results in normal behaviour; the
other half of the time, it shows up behind the front window. _Focus_
works as expected in all cases.

Xprop indicates that there are no differences between the window in
either case.

[Bug 95706] Re: [apport] beryl crashed with SIGFPE in detectRefreshRateOfScreen()

2007-03-26 Thread Nick
OK, that's definitely the case. Can I ask for a little more information
from you? Specifically, the graphics card and driver you're using, the
"Device" and "Screen" sections from your xorg.conf, your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log after the crash has happened, and the output of the
command "xrandr"?

I have a hackish patch that would work around the problem but this is
either an Xrandr or driver problem, so it would be nice to get a proper
fix.

Thanks.

[Bug 89786] Re: Desktop-effect does not enable cube

2007-03-25 Thread Nick
This bug is not fixed in the Beta.

I did a clean install of the Fiesty Beta this morning and had to make
the changes as suggested by the OP. Cube works great now.

If Cube is going to be supported in Fiesty this needs to be fixed.
Having a menu item called "Workspaces on a Cube" that doesn't actually
do what it indicates it will do is not a good thing.

Oooh, lovely. It's actually a beryl-core bug, though, and I officially
fail at launchpad. Meh.

Workaround is, of course, FSP set to none, but the FSP code was taken

the problem.

[Bug 96401] Re: beryl crash on "feisty"

2007-03-26 Thread Nick
This error is common when another compositing manager is running (e.g.
kompmgr) - only one compositor can be active at a time.

If using KDE, try disabling "shadows and transparency" in kcontrol; also
make sure the kompmgr process isn't running.

If this is it, maybe we need $something in beryl-kubuntu to disable
KDE's compositing effects by default? Comments?

think a temporary workaround would be to unselect 'detect refresh rate'
in beryl-settings (General Options), which will cause rate in
setRefreshRate to = 60.

One suspects a bug in detectRefreshRateOfScreen(), or (more likely?)
whatever mechanism it's using to get the refresh rate; I'll investigate
further.

[Bug 96636] Desktop freezes when Openoffice Writer started when Workspaces on a Cube is active

2007-03-26 Thread Nick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

Testing Fiesty Beta.

P4, 1gb ram, ATI Radeon 9600 (open source driver xorg)

Desktop becomes non-functional when OpenOffice Writer is started if
Workspace on a Cube is running. The only option is to
but this is broken so I have to thento
get this system going again.

I have tested several times. The problem does not happen when "Windows
Wobble when moved" is active. It only happens when "Workspaces on a
Cube" is active.

My testing experience so far leads me think that "Windows Wobble when
moved" is pretty close to being ready for prime time. On the other
hand, "Workspaces on a Cube" is not ready for prime time.

** Affects: desktop-effects (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

Why not go all-out and call it Purgatory?

That's what it is, after all - where uncertain files wait until their fate is
decided...

Might offend non-Christians, though ;). Although I'm not offended. Anyone
else?
