[Bug 260630] Re: Mouse disappears when moved over kstars star chart

2008-08-23 Thread Phil Bull
Thanks for your replies. I'm running Ubuntu rather than Kubuntu, and the
GNOME and KDE cursor themes are set independently. Is there a way of
changing the KDE cursor theme without having to install lots of KDE
packages? Changing the GNOME cursor theme has no effect.

[Bug 260319] [NEW] libpam-runtime fails to install (debconf DbDriver error)

2008-08-22 Thread Phil Bull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-runtime

Updating using update-manager fails due to the package libpam-runtime
(1.0.1-3ubuntu3). The following error details are provided by update-
manager:

debconf: DbDriver config: /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another

[...]

I'm running an otherwise up-to-date Ubuntu Intrepid and have received
this error twice in different updates over the last 24 hours. The
problem appears to be with /usr/sbin/update-grub locking
/var/cache/debconf/config.dat.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release:8.10

$ sudo fuser /var/cache/debconf/config.dat

$ sudo kill 4503

After killing the process (4503 in this case) and running update-manager
again, the upgrade can be completed successfully.

[Bug 155658] window border flaps or oscillates by itself

2007-10-21 Thread Phil Colbourn
Public bug reported:

Hard to explain: It happens when the following is true:

* a non-maximized window title bar is touching the top panel
* when dragging a window left and right
* window extends across two workspaces (

The title bar seems to bend upwards underneath the panel. When dragging
has finished (mouse button is released) the windows does one of two
things:

1. it 'dances' with the right side (or the left side depending on whether the
window is on the left or right side of the screen) of the window jumping up and
down continuously. The content is constantly adjusting the the new window size
(kind-of a nice effect but difficult to use)
2. the window dances a few times then the whole window slides down the screen
an inch and stops.

I have a video that I can send to someone.
I am running gutsy and only noticed it today (October 22, 2007) after an
upgrade (but this may be a red-herring).

[Bug 147807] Re: vol_id: does not recognise FAT* partitions with sector size 8192

2007-10-16 Thread Phil Richards
Well, the point was that *I* didn't format it. It came out of the box
(from Seagate) formatted that way.

It's really a none issue for me now - I gave up and reformatted the disk
with different filesystem types :-) (Something I would have done early,
but moving 200 Gb of data around was slightly fiddly on my current
machine).

However, I was slightly surprised that it worked with Edgy Eft (and had
worked with my previous Gentoo install for quite a long time), and
stopped working with Feisty Fawn - that's why I raised the issue. The
fact that one manufacturer (who, it could be argued, should know better)
is shipping disks with a bogus sector size is probably slightly
worrying... on the other hand, they are shipping them, and users will
plug them in and find that Linux doesn't see the disk whereas Windows
does, and say Linux doesn't recognise my hard disk. (vol_id is being
safely paranoid, but I wonder if the check could be relaxed a little,
regardless of what the spec says.) For what it's worth, blkid did
report the information correctly.

Anyway, as I said, I have fixed the problem locally by other means, so
it no longer affects me.

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

2007-10-17 Thread Phil Estes
It may be worth noting that looking to other new or upcoming releases of
other distros is not going to help. Although I initially was frustrated
with Ubuntu (and yes, there are other suggestions for improved
communication of the problem to users), the frustration should be
pointed towards AMD as CONFIG_SLUB=y is going to appear in every distro
coming down the pike.. Fedora 8 has it on by default as well. So, on
the bright side, maybe the next monthly drop of fglrx (coming soon?)
will have a fix for latest (2.6.23 or greater) kernel support (which is
really the root fix), and if not, hopefully they will soon hear it from
every distro user (fedora, ubuntu, openSuSE at some point?) that they
must be compatible with the slub allocator.

[Bug 102097] Re: Auto mount does not work for USB drive

2007-10-01 Thread Phil Richards
Sadly, I've still got the problem.

I know *where* the problem is in my case, but no idea how to fix it :-(
(See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/118292)

It comes down to vol_id not recognising a vfat partition: the device entry is
created, and I can mount it by hand:
$ sudo mount -o ro -t vfat /dev/sdg1 /mnt
works fine.

But, /sbin/vol_id shows:
$ vol_id /dev/sdg1
/dev/sdg1: unknown volume type

Of course, the system *can* recognise the partition properly if you use a
different command:
$ blkid /dev/sdg1
/dev/sdg1: LABEL=SEA_DISK UUID=-0ED4 TYPE=vfat

So as 118292 says, it's a udev (vol_id) bug (possibly under Ubuntu).

I am somewhat loath to do the workarounds suggested (especially rewriting
vol_id as a shell script), but unless somebody decides to fix it properly, I
don't see much choice.
I've been living with this bug since Feisty broke Edgy, and Gutsy is no better
(yet :-), but it's a bit of a pain...

[Bug 102097] Re: Auto mount does not work for USB drive

2007-10-01 Thread Phil Richards
Ok, having read the vol_id source code, and dumped out my header for
/dev/sdg1 (my external disk) I think I have an idea what the problem is:

The SEAGATE drive I have has a single partition over its 250Gb. This
has a sector size of 0x2000 (according to the disk header).

vol_id internally sanity checks the allowed sector sizes for a FAT* disk
to be one of: 0x200, 0x400, 0x800, or 0x1000.

This check fails. The partition is therefore rejected as a FAT volume.

Simple fix would be to add 0x2000 as a valid sector size...

[Bug 147807] udev vol_id does not recognise FAT* partitions with sector size 8192

2007-10-01 Thread Phil Richards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

Since upgrading from Edgy Eft to Feisty Fawn I have been unable to
automount my external USB 250Gb SEAGATE harddrive.

I've been subscribed to a number of bugs on related problems, but not seen a
solution. This weekend I tried Gutsy, and still no joy so I decided to dig
deeper.
(I've posted some of the following to 102097, but I thought it might be clearer
as a separate report.)

The problem boils down to vol_id not recognising the partition as VFAT. I've
looked at the source code, and I think the problem is in
udev-113/extras/volume_id/lib/fat.c at around line 328:
/* sector size check */
sector_size = le16_to_cpu(vs-sector_size);
if (sector_size != 0x200  sector_size != 0x400
sector_size != 0x800  sector_size != 0x1000)
return -1;

Dumping out the header for the partition, I calculate that the
sector_size on the partition is 0x2000 - which means that the partition
is rejected on the FAT* checks.

Any chance of a fix? Pretty please?

pihl

my prism2 card:

1) Is detected by hostap_cs, and has an interface created: eth1 as

2) Doesn't work with manual configuration (ifconfig, iwconfig and dhclient)
3) Works fine with orinoco_cs and manual configuration (I'm using it
now with a hacked 2.6.20 kernel)

** Summary changed:

- Wrong internal links in 'Installing a single package file'

[Bug 145673] Re: Ubuntu needs Guided Help

2007-09-29 Thread Phil Bull
I've had a stab at doing things in a graphical, step-by-step way. Make
sure that:

 * You are running GNOME
 * You have the python-dogtail and python-xlib packages installed
 * You have ticked 'Enable assistive technologies' in System - Preferences -
Universal Access - Assistive Technology Preferences
 * You have logged out and then logged back in again *after* ticking 'Enable
assistive technologies'

Then, download the Python file that I've attached, make it executable
and run it. You should see your mouse properties get messed with.

What do you think?

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] Suspend to Ram does not work on Z61m

2007-10-06 Thread Phil Estes
I can confirm as an employee of a company with 1000s of Thinkpad users
who use various distros, but lots of Ubuntu, this is going to really
suck. I just decided to try Gutsy and this is the one thing that is a
real downer to hear that no one really cares if ATI-based notebook users
just can't suspend. I guess Ubuntu's position is deal with it suckers
instead of the early Ubuntu days make Linux just work.. oh well (and
yes, I'm very aware of the issue that fglrx is involved, but Ubuntu has
to answer for that as well as they package, ship, and make it easy to
use restricted/non-open drivers.) I've CCed myself just in case happy
news comes down the pike before gold..

[Bug 144045] Re: hibernate does not work on Thinkpad t42 in Gutsy Gibbon

2007-10-06 Thread Phil Estes
this is most likely bug 121653.. a problem with fglrx (ATI binary
driver) and the new SLUB allocator. Summary of #121653 (my paraphrase):
ATI needs to fix the fglrx driver since it's closed source, and Ubuntu
kernel devs aren't willing to return to SLAB allocator which doesn't
cause the fglrx driver to fail on suspend.

I'm not sure I have powers to mark as duplicate, but someone should
probably go ahead and do that.

[Bug 150167] Re: Spelling errors in Hardware page

2007-10-07 Thread Phil Bull
I quietly fixed that typo this morning. The fix had been hanging around
in my local copy for a few days.

If you like, you can create a diff for one bug, use the 'svn revert
path/to/file.xml' command, fix the other issue, create a diff for that
and then attach each to their respective bug reports.

[Bug 150641] Desktop Effects settings UI has changed

2007-10-08 Thread Phil Bull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The user interface for the configuration of Desktop Effects has changed.
References to the new UI should be updated in the documentation.

 1. Press System - Preferences - Appearance
 2. 'Desktop Effects' has been renamed to 'Visual Effects'

[Bug 144783] Re: Intro paragraph in Advanced topics section doesn't really help

2007-10-08 Thread Phil Bull
Thanks for the patch Mads. Just a couple of comments:

 * The phrase to your special needs seems a little redundant, so could
probably be removed.
 * info = information

I think that your patch is an improvement over the original. I disagree
with mpt that a user would be more likely to solve their problem (at all
significantly) faster if the paragraph was not there, as I doubt most
users read intro paragraphs! However, I do agree that an intro paragraph
is not necessary in this case. I'm fine with it either way - a) updated
text or b) no text.

[Bug 152164] Wrong value given to requires lib=... with custom widget catalog

2007-10-12 Thread Phil Lello
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: glade-3

Version 3.2.0
-

When glade-3 is used with custom widgets, it tries to save the name of
the lib containing the widgets in the .glade file, via requires
lib=..., e.g.

  require lib=GtkMud/

The value for lib is being taken from the name attribute instead of the library
attribute.
e.g. the catalog looks like :
  glade-catalog name=GtkMud library=gtkmud-widgets depends=gtk+
   ...
  /glade-catalog

The correct value should of course be gtkmud-widgets, so that libglade
tries to open gtkmud-widgets.so, instead of:

  (gtkmud:1195): libglade-WARNING **: Could not load support for
`GtkMud': libGtkMud.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory

My 'work-around' is to link my app against a static version of my widget
library - I get an error message, but can still create my widgets.

compaq wl-100 is (if I read it correctly) removed from the orinoco_cs

[Bug 125832] Re: [gutsy] orinoco_cs.ko missing

2007-09-14 Thread Phil Colbourn
This is the compaq wl100. it matches my pcmcia card.
-   PCMCIA_DEVICE_MANF_CARD(0x0138, 0x0002), /* Compaq WL100 11 Mbps
Wireless Adapter */

I think the problem is that hostap is supposed to work for this and
other cards, but it does not seem to for many of us blessed with this or
similar cards.

I also have to blacklist hostap_cs and hostap so it does not take
control.

I should add that orinoco_cs in 2.6.20-16 (the last kernel it seemed to
be in from ubuntu) does not work as well as it once did, but this could
just be me. I can make it work even if I have to ifdown and ifup it
occasionally.
