I would actually advocate removing Gimp from the default install in
Dapper+1. It's a highly technical app. I use it myself, but people who
need it can install it.

What most people want to do is crop and resize images before emailing
them (which would make sense to have the email client take care of --
you are about to send a 2MB file; would you like to resize it?)

KolourPaint has just the right amount of functionality IMO and F-Spot
just needs resize (unless I've missed it).

I would also support this, but I think it should wait until Dapper+1.

XSane is mandatory in menu.
I can't understand why it has been removed.
If it is deleted, there will be a VFAQ (Very Frequently Asked Question)
in forums and lists.

About Inkscape, it would be nice to include it.
If Ubuntu includes a professional pixmap editor, it should include a
professinal vector editor.

Another application which could be include is Sound Coverter. Easy to
use, based on gstreamer and programmed using pyton and libglade. It
reads everything that gstreamer reads and write to ogg or flac

Human Yasis Icon Theme

2006-02-11 Thread Jochen Skulj
Hi,

I am new on this list, so please excuse me for not replying to an
existing thread.

Are any plans to add the Human Yasis Icon Theme to an Ubuntu repository?
I've used this theme for a couple of weeks now and for me it fits almost
perfectly to the Ubuntu Human design. Aside from the discussion about
the default icon theme I think it would just nice if every user would be
able to install this icon theme easily by using apt-get or synaptic
instead of browsing through gnome-look.org

I already tried to build a package of this theme for my own use [2].
Maybe some of you are interested to try it out. But it is the very first
package that I ever created. If the package doesn't work correctly I
would appreciate your feedback to learn more about building packages.

Thanks, Jochen

By the way, is it too early (or late...) to promote Inkscape to be
installed by default? There was a bug in gnome-app-install that
prevented it from appearing even there, but additionally I am interested
if it could be the choice to "strenghten" the default application
selection to vector graphics (SVG), especially as the graphics menu is
rather empty currently. And inkscape is already in main.

Despite the version number, Inkscape is both stable and feature-rich,
and a worthy OSS competitor to CorelDraw, Illustrator etc. I'd guess
most of http://www.openclipart.org/ SVG clip art has been made with
Inkscape, though I could be wrong.

Other things, that are post-dapper:
- Audio or video tools would also be welcome (doesn't Mac OS X and/or
Windows have bundled movie editing?) if nice enough tools appear.
- Integrating Open Clipart to a nicely browseable (from OOo and other
places) collection of clipart. This is a huge package and might be
somehow offered as an easy download (perhaps even when selecting some
"clip art" option in OOo insted of gnome-app-install).
- Regarding Sample Content specification and the previous point, OOo
templates would be very much needed too for ordinary users.

I agree, this definitely needs to be restored. No one is going to think
of accessing GIMP to scan stuff.

The graphics menu is rather bare anyway :)
