Web Page Maintenance

2011-10-21 Thread Tim Henderson
Based on a post to the Users list, I'd like to offer my assistance in
keeping the web page a little more up to date. I am on the systems team
of a popular web host and and pretty good working my way around web page
maintenance, and server maintenance for what its worth.

Fixing the page issues would be a breeze and I'd be glad to help.

anytime. its not so much an issue of making the changes as it is getting
permission to make the changes. we are working on it, and would be more than
glad for you to come and help. thanks

Google Code-in

2011-10-21 Thread Daniel Holbach
Hello everybody,

[ I shamelessly stole parts of the announcement from Stefano
Zacchiroli's post to debian-devel@. ]

Google Code-in is a contest for pre-university students (e.g., high
school and secondary school students ages 13-17) with the goal of
encouraging young people to participate in open source.

If we want to participate we need volunteers who are willing to be
mentors and somebody helping with the organisation. Laura Czajkowski has
graciously agreed to help with the task of organising it. If you want to
be part of this initiative, please get in touch with her.

http://code.google.com/intl/de/opensource/gci/2011-12/index.html
http://www.google-melange.com/gci/document/show/gci_program/google/gci2011/faq
http://www.google-melange.com/gci/document/show/gci_program/google/gci2011/rules

The tasks of admins will be:
- having time to devote to the task from the beginning of November to
  the beginning of January
- calling for / organizing ways to collect Debian easy hacks, that
will be given out as GCI tasks
- interacting with the students that will take part in GCI

The deadline for *project* applications in GCI is November 1st. We'll
need to have volunteers before that date, as it'd be pointless to apply
if we aren't sure Ubuntu can participate properly in GCI. According to
feedback from past admins, it'd be wise to have at least 3 volunteers
before deciding to apply.

Have a great day,
 Daniel

extending desktop LTS to 5 years

2011-10-21 Thread Allison Randal
Hi all,

For Precise Pangolin, Canonical is planning to invest resources in
support and maintenance to increase the Ubuntu desktop LTS length from 3
years to 5 years (bringing it up to the same length as the server LTS),
and to offer additional updates for new hardware through the standard
SRUs and point releases in the first two years of the LTS. We've been
consulting with the Tech Board, members of the Release Team, and flavors
to make sure that this will be a beneficial contribution to the
community, and won't cause any unintended additional work.

Kate and I are scheduling a session at UDS about LTS planning, and we
can talk there around practical details. For example, flavors that have
taken the LTS designation in the past can choose now whether to use the
added support and maintenance to extend their own support cycles or
stick with 3 years. So, we'll talk through the ups and downs of each.
Happy to add other items to the agenda for the session, let us know.

Thanks,
Allison

Adding a feature to enable a third party repository to an application

2011-10-21 Thread Mario Limonciello
Hello,

In Mythbuntu we have a tool called Mythbuntu Control Centre (MCC) that has a
pluggable infrastructure for adding support via other packages. One of the
plugins available is a package called mythbuntu-repos. This package isn't
currently on the archive, but stored solely on
http://mythbuntu.org/auto-builds. This package adds an additional tab to
MCC which allows the user to enable or disable an extra repository for
mythtv updates. This repository contains packages kicked off by a script
that will build updated mythtv builds to both the current stable branch and
the current master branch. Users can select either one from the repository.

Thus far we've been reluctant to bring this feature directly into the
packages in the archive. More and more however, we're finding ourselves
recommending users go that URL to enable auto-builds and then update to the
latest of the stable branch to determine if the problem is present there.
So we're considering bringing the feature to enable the repository directly
into MCC without additional plugins, but of course leaving the repository
disabled until the user opts in to it.

I wanted to get feedback from other Ubuntu developers. What do you think
about allowing the user to enable a third party source from this tool?

Thanks,
