Looking for Community Council nominations
Hello everybody, The Community Council is looking for nominees for the upcoming election. In the past months and weeks Laura and Mike stepped down from the CC for personal reasons, so we decided to restaff the CC a bit early. Normally, elections would have been in November, so we're a few months early. If you are interested in the CC's work, have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommunityCouncil and the pages linked from there. If you're an Ubuntu member, have been involved in the Ubuntu community for a good while and know its inner workings well, please consider nominating yourself or, if you know somebody and asked them, please nominate them for the role. The term length is two years and all Ubuntu members are eligible for voting. To nominate, just send a quick mail to community-coun...@lists.ubuntu.com with the name and Launchpad ID of the person you're nominating. Don't be shy. Mark will shortlist the list of nominations and we hope to kick off the election process in about two weeks. Thanks a lot everyone who was on the CC these past (almost) two years. Looking for list moderators
Hello everybody, I'm looking for additional moderators for some of our mailing lists. It's not a lot of work, it's just a matter of setting up the listadmin tool and running it regularly. In a lot of cases our spam filters let some mails through, in other cases there are genuine mails which need moderation. Sometimes there's an off-topic post or other issues to deal with, but not so often. It's the following lists: ubuntu-app-de...@lists.ubuntu.com ubuntu-devel-disc...@lists.ubuntu.com ubuntu-m...@lists.ubuntu.com ubuntu-spons...@lists.ubuntu.com universe-b...@lists.ubuntu.com If you are an Ubuntu member and a trusted contributor to those lists, I'm happy to share access and let you know the process. Hello everybody, we had a long look at the calendar and it looks like 15-17 Nov would be a good time for the next Ubuntu Online Summit. Hello, what I probably didn't express as clearly in my first mail as I should have: - on systems where skype is installed already apt updates/installations are now broken - this is not a skype package problem, but more of a multiarch i386/amd64 version mismatch (or something), so this might be occuring in other places too It looks to me like a serious problem, can anyone help debug this? Proposed UOS date
Hello, the feedback for the last UOS was to bring it back in sync with Ubuntu's release cycle again. As Ubuntu 15.10 releases on 2015-10-22 and UOS is usually from Tue to Thu, I'd like so suggest 2015-11-03 -- 2015-11-05 as the following week USA have Veterans Day (2015-11-11). This would give everyone enough time to get over release day hangover and we should also have opened the archive for the X cycle again. Any objections? If there are none, I'm going to announce this end of next week. Thanks in advance. Creating Ubuntu USB sticks
Hello everybody, in the past few weeks I saw the discussion about what was the best way to create Ubuntu USB sticks a couple of times. It looks like USB Creator and Testdrive didn't get as much love as they used to do in the past (please correct me if I'm wrong). I also noticed that https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity8DesktopIso under Creating the image mentions using Disks and heard that it's more reliable. Would it make sense to start updating our documentation? Is this what we all can agree on? UOS dates (draft)
Hello everybody, with the release plan for 15.04 being available (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/VividVervet/ReleaseSchedule), we can now start planning UOS dates. If we're going to leave 2 weeks between release and UOS and move back to Tuesday to Thursday this would get us 5 - 7 May 2015 as UOS dates. Are there any major objections to this? Hello, the moderation of this list took a bit of a backseat in the last time, so quite a few mails have been sitting in the moderation queue for a bit. As Michael said in one of his last mails, some new folks are now looking at moderation. If you see some old mails hitting the list every now and then, that's why. Landing patches in Ubuntu
Hello everybody, this was brought up in a discussion at UOS and it looks like we need some more help with reviewing patches and merge proposals again. Overview: http://reqorts.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/sponsoring/ Documentation: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/CodeReviews A lot of this is done by people who participate in the patch pilot programme. We had some non-Canonical pilots in the past, but not too many. If any of you should want to get on the piloting schedule and get a monthly reminder to do some piloting, let me know, and I'll add you. :-) So no matter if you want to do some adhoc sponsoring, or want to get added to the piloting schedule, it'd be appreciated. We want to get contributions in quicker and get new people on board more quickly. If you have upload rights or can do reviews, please help out. Thanks a lot in advance. Hey, On 16.01.2014 20:34, Steve Langasek wrote: On Thu, Jan 16, 2014 at 05:31:17PM +0100, Matthias Klose wrote: Trusty currently has qt 5.0 packages. Trusty-proposed has some unbuilt 5.1 packages. There are daily builds of 5.2 packages. Feature freeze is not that far away. What are the qt plans for trusty? I would like to include updated qt packages for the next test rebuild. I expect we will be taking 5.2 for trusty, but currently this is held up due to concerns about the qreal ABI change on armhf and its possible impact on apps in the app store. I'm in the process of analyzing the ABI changes for impact, and hope to be able to share the results this week. We will need to take a decision soon about how to handle the upgrade to 5.2; I'm hoping that the results of the ABI investigation will make this decision an easy one. Packaging Guide News!
Hello everybody, I’m please to announce the following changes have landed in the Ubuntu Packaging Guide [1]: * The Packaging Guide is now fully translated into French! Bravo, équipe français! Thanks a lot everyone who helped out here! * We moved from developer.ubuntu.com/packaging to our new home [2] - don’t despair, redirects are in place! This was done, because developer.ubuntu.com more and more moved into the direction of delivering tutorials for people who want to create content (apps, scopes, charms, etc.) on top of Ubuntu. This also gives us the benefit that we don’t have to integrate the guide into a wordpress installation somehow, but maintain it all on our own. Thanks a lot Tom Haddon for helping set this up and Andrew Starr-Bochicchio for beautifying the landing page. Great work everyone! * We are finally going to get rid of the old wiki guide. Andrew had announced the move many months ago and we should now be safe to remove the content. Our journey is far from over. If you want to help out, please do! * We have bugs [3] filed against the packaging guide and need help. Some are tagged as ‘bitesize‘ [4] already. * Please also help translating [5]the guide. Many teams have already put some work into this. You can help out by either translating or reviewing translated strings. Keep up the good work everyone. This is great! :-) [1] https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-packaging-guide [2] http://packaging.ubuntu.com [3] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-packaging-guide [4] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-packaging-guide/+bugs?field.tag=bitesize [5] https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu-packaging-guide Have a great day, Daniel -- Get involved in Ubuntu development! packaging.ubuntu.com Follow @ubuntudev on identi.ca/twitter.com/facebook.com/G+ -- ubuntu-devel-announce mailing list ubuntu-devel-announce@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-announce

Re: Planning to create a new distro of Ubuntu
Hello, On 02.11.2013 16:52, Ben Tinner wrote: I am planning to create a new distro of Ubuntu which will have the GNOME 2 look and feel. For those of you who are subscribed to ubuntu-users, you would have heard about my plans to create this (Anyone interested in a GNOME 2 look and feel remix?). Officially called Ubuntu MATE Remix, this will integrate the MATE Desktop Environment to the power and stability of Ubuntu. In fact, I already had a working prototype based on Saucy Salamander. You can download the prototype at https://shared.com/unqjauvtrj Currently, there are a few issues with the prototype. 1. I do not know how to implement a GUI bootmenu in the Live CD (like the one used in the Ubuntu Live CD). 2. I do not know how to make the system to autostart the GUI, so the only way to start the GUI is to type 'startx' on the command line. I will be generating another prototype based on Trusty Tahr soon. After testing out my prototype, can you give me a few suggestions to improve the distro? I hope that this will be officially recognised and supported by the Ubuntu community. Are you planning to get the necessary packages into Ubuntu itself? That might help make maintenance a lot easier. People from the other Ubuntu flavours might be able to help out with some of the issues you mention above. Re: Let good developers like Mozilla to maintenance their packages
Hello Prefix, On 20.09.2013 17:38, Prefix wrote: What is more important is that, they know a lot more about their code than us. If a large project like Firefox contain bugs in their code and can't work well in Ubuntu, we have to waste a lot of time to learn the code tree, learn the algorithm in the program and finally find where the bug is, and fix it. But the Mozilla developers are familiar with the code and is possible to fix it within five minutes! This will happen if only Mozilla maintenance Firefox packages themselves, because they will develop on Ubuntu, build on Ubuntu, test on Ubuntu. Bugs will become less and less, and less time will be wasted on things just like reinventing the wheel! Sure. Upstream authors would be great to have very close to Ubuntu and actively involved in Ubuntu itself. Did you ask anyone at Mozilla if they were interested in maintaining packages in Ubuntu and take care of all the integration with Ubuntu? I might be wrong, but I get the impression that you seem to assume that integration in Ubuntu is an easy thing to do. While it'd be great if that was the case, you might just want to have a look at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/+source/firefox/+changelog to get an idea of what kind of changes were necessary to make Firefox work well in Saucy. In the interesting cases in our archive, you bring in a new version of a piece of software and it will have a big impact on many other packages. Balancing this out and putting work into making everything work nicely often is quite an achievement. If you have any proposals how Upstream authors could more easily get involved in Ubuntu, please bring them up here on the mailing list. Hello, On 20.09.2013 17:54, Chris Coulson wrote: On 20/09/13 16:38, Prefix wrote: If we have a look at the maintainers of the packages in the Pool, we will find none of the maintainers are the software developers themselves. Well, thanks I think what Prefix wanted to say was that it's not the software authors. Although that's still hard to find out, especially in bigger projects. Please help with sponsoring
Hello everybody, http://reqorts.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/sponsoring/ was up to 95 requests this morning. Please have a look over a few items and please review and upload them or reject them if necessary. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/CodeReviews should have a few useful tips if you're unsure. Thanks a lot in advance. Sponsoring: stagnating at 50
Hello everybody, having a look at http://reqorts.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/sponsoring/ every now and then it looks like we're stagnating at around 50 sponsoring items. It'd be fantastic if everybody with upload rights could go and have a look and either sponsor, review or reject some entries in there. If you need any decision making help, have a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/CodeReviews Thanks a lot in advance, Daniel -- Get involved in Ubuntu development! developer.ubuntu.com/packaging Follow @ubuntudev on identi.ca/twitter.com/facebook.com/G+ -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

Thanks everyone!
Hello everybody, thanks a lot to everyone who contributed to the 13.04 release and make it such a beautiful beautiful thing! On https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RaringRingtail/ReleaseNotes/Credits/Developers you can find a list of people who contributed through uploads to Ubuntu. Bear in mind that lots of commits were auto-landed and some fixes not correctly attributed, but still it's a great thing to see how many people from how many different places contributed to the Raring Ringtail. Enjoy the celebrations! Accompanying a new generation of developers
Hello everybody, The Ubuntu Developer Advisory Team has been in place for two or three release cycles already and it’s been a fun journey so far. We’ve got in touch with many many new contributors and old contributors as well. If you don’t know what this team does, here’s what our wiki page has to say: We * Reach out to new contributors, thank them for their work and get feedback. * Reach out to people who might be ready to apply for upload rights and help them. * Reach out to contributors that went inactive and get feedback from them and offer help. I personally found this very rewarding as I got to talk to many new contributors and see how they feel about Ubuntu Development. You can help! If the above sounds interesting to you and you enjoy engaging socially, if you have made a few experiences in Ubuntu Development and want to help out, please talk to me. It’d be great to have you on board! https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DeveloperAdvisoryTeam Have a great day, Daniel -- Get involved in Ubuntu development! developer.ubuntu.com/packaging Follow @ubuntudev on identi.ca/twitter.com/facebook.com/G+ -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel
