I've read the whole thread, and I just want to reiterate - all default
ubuntu installations enable main, restricted, universe and multiverse
components of an Ubuntu Series, including release, security and
updates pockets (e.g. jammy jammy-security jammy-updates). All of
these are considered to be part of a given Ubuntu distribution
release. A package is available to be installed by default, if it
exists in any of those places. The distinction between the various
locations are in the grand scheme of things fairly minor, and are
policy driven.

There can be specific cases and instances where things are missplaced,
or have been removed and reintroduced. If you have specific packages
and examples of things unavailable, please point them out for further
investigation. Removal and reintroduction often happens when a package
fails to be compatible with a given Ubuntu release, in the specified
timeframe due to timed releases. But these are exceptions rather than
the norm.

Ah! That's the key info missing in my head.

So would you say that universe and main is something like a stage/stair?
Beside of exceptional cases you have to be in universe before gettin
into "main"?

That was also new to me that it happens that kind of automatic.
I like that.

I totally misunderstood universe. I thought it was community driven. I
mean "Ubuntu fans" doing the packaging there.

This wish came from my wrong picture of universe I think.

Thanks a lot for broadening my horizons. ;)

The bug would be opened on the source package of whatever package you're
trying to promote to main. If the package is in universe, that's pretty
easy, visit the package page for it:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/PACKAGENAMEHERE

and click 'Report a bug'. Hopefully then the github piece will make more
sense.

If the package isn't actually in Ubuntu yet, it'll take more work. If you
get the package into Debian unstable, it'll automatically be imported into
Ubuntu universe by a syncing robot.

There's nothing that says your request would be closed immediately, but
there's no denying that it would take more work. Promoting packages to
main requires a team bug subscriber: you'd want to talk to whichever team
would make most sense to maintain the package and discuss why it'd make
sense.

Why specifically main? What's wrong with universe?

Thanks

Nice process. It is not clear for me how do I open a bug report. The
bug list on launchpad is closed. There is no "new bug report" item.

I assume I misunderstand something.

At this point I assume the same.

Please note that "main" in Ubuntu is not the same as "main" in Debian.
"main" + "universe" makes (approximately) up Debian's "main".

So unless you have a reason to ask that Canonical takes responsibility
for the maintenance, "universe" is probably right for whatever package
you are talking about. It's probably there already, isn't it?

I think there is a misunderstanding here, but it clear to me exactly
what you want or why you want it. Could you expand on that please, and
then maybe we'll be able to help you without misunderstanding?

MIR is not Mir (https://mir-server.io/)

Also Mir's death has been greatly exaggerated :)

Dear Gunnar,

I assume I misunderstand something.

I also think the process isn't worth and my request would be closed
immediately. My arguments for the package is easy. It is still in Debian
which is a quality fact by itself. So take it from there. Isn't Ubuntu
itself "based on Debian"? What does this technically mean? You just copy
some packages from a Debian repo?

How to ask for introducing a new package into main?

2023-01-19 Thread c . buhtz

Hello,

I checked the wiki and docu but couldn't find that process described
somewhere.

Is there a ticket system where I can open a wishlist-bug or something
else to ask for introducing a new package into the "main" repository?

"universe", launchpad or privat ppa are not an option because the
package is still there.
