just a little nitpick, restricted is not for apps, only for hardware
enablement. generally redistributable closed software needs to go to
multiverse.

To be included in the Ubuntu Archive (main & universe), it is indeed
should be open source software. When open sourcing, it is preffered to
use one of the established open source licenses as approved by OSI
[1]. Open sourcing your application will make it suitable for wide
inclusion in other Linux distributions as well.

Some software that is proprietary, but allows redistribution can be
included under limited circumstances in Ubuntu restricted or
multiverse components.

Furthermore one can also publish applications in Canonical partner
repository (e.g. Microsoft publishes Skype there) or Ubuntu Software
Centre [2].

how to contribute package to repository

2013-07-11 Thread Ovcharov Dmitry
Dear sirs,

Our company is software developer.
Our software is proprietary RDF database.
We would like to include our software package in the official Linux
distribution repository.
What do we need for this? A special license? Should we open source codes?

Best regards, Dmitry
Head of Department system administration
