Wingdings (or, Can YOU crack the code?)
A bit of a follow-up to the Tahoma thread; as I've chronicled on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/msttcorefonts/+bug/50529 I've discovered that MS Word allows you to embed certain fonts (based on a 4-tier licensing scheme) inside files it creates; what's even more interesting is that for the most 'permissive' embedibility, a font "may be embedded in documents and permanently installed on the remote system" :-) When the Word97 viewer (what I tested, with Wine) opens the file, if the font isn't already installed, it automatically extracts and installs the font onto that computer in C:\windows\Fonts (yes, that sounds like a security risk to me, but hey, its Microsoft, ne? :) So here's the puzzle: I created a RTF file with Wingdings embedded into it: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/16679172/Wingdings.rtf (with a legit copy of Word 97 I bought at a thrift shop for $2! Take *that* Microsoft! ;) The Word 97 Viewer: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/corefonts/wd97vwr32.exe Outputs a TTF the exact same size as the orignal Windings font (though not the same MD5SUM, curiously). Now, inside the RTF is a very long batch of what looks like hexadecimal which is the font in some sort of encoded/compressed manner; the text itself is almost exactly the same filesize as the font, so the conversion is hopefully not hugely complicated. Indeed, it seems that OO.o is working on this: "Currently we do nothing with these (fairly rare) embedded fonts, though if you are a developer you can examine sw/source/filter/ww8/ww8par.cxx SwWW8ImplReader::CoreLoad and search for the comment "experimental embedded ttf dumper" which shows how to enable dumping the embedded font data." http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=discuss&msgNo=59931 But what would be really handy would be a little app to go something like: $ rtf2ttf Wingdings.rtf and out would pop the file :) It would not be long then until msttcorefonts could add Arial Narrow and Wingdings (maybe a new package 'msttmorefonts' ;) Can anyone here create such a thing? As software libre, of course ;) Sincerely, Conrad Knauer -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

2008/8/9 Alexander Jones <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Voice and video, period. By the time Empathy starts to reach Pidgin stability and feature parity otherwise, Pidgin probably has those too. Though it has been long in the making, the current V&V branch seems to be functional. Anyway, the more integrated approach of Empathy is interesting, but probably delivers less for the casual user for now than Pidgin. Among features I couldn't think of dropping (by switching from Pidgin to Empathy by default) are file transfers and joining password-protected chat rooms. Hmm, maybe bugs should be filed about these in Launchpad, too? As before, V&V can be done through Ekiga anyway as long as Pidgin doesn't support it in a release. -Timo -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss
Re: Call for testing empathy
No offence Marcin, but Gadu-Gadu is really only an issue if you are Polish. I don't think it's unreasonable to concede that such a small percentage of our user base will, in the absolute worst scenario, just have to install Pidgin themselves. Otherwise, help them build a Gadu-Gadu connection manager that either is or isn't built on Haze! -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

Maybe it could, but it does not. It does not support gadu-gadu which is supported by libpurple, even if telepathy-haze is installed. By "support" I mean also sending & receiving the list of contacts to the server, getting information about a user with the given ID, and searching for a user matching the given search criteria. Pidgin does this. Empathy does not support even basic talk. It has a chance of doing better than Pidgin by supporting the same sets of emoticons as the native gadu-gadu client (assuming that copyright allows that). -- Marcin Kowalczyk [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://qrnik.knm.org.pl/~qrczak/ -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

Hi, Empathy can use libpurple as backend for the protocols which don't have yet a telepathy backend. I for one am glad to see empathy get more attention as it seems highly promising. I would not push for use it in a LTS relese as is but intrepid is not. Anyway, it will probably not satisfy everyone right now: * pidgin and other clients will still be available for people who dislike it. Someone who can't install pidgin aftewards should clearly not test intrepid so early... * pushing it forward in the preview releases doesn't mean that it will be default in the final release Best regards -- Aurélien Naldi -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

Empathy is without a doubt a richer platform than Pidgin in our case. Because it is not intent on working across platforms, it can assume the presence of certain technologies like dbus and for GTK to exist in all its glory instead of relying on plugis (with their limitations) to achieve that. Also, while I am not sure 2.24 will see this, Empathy will be a very, very important part of GNOME in the future. The Empathy developers are working on a system with which a program can carry out online communication via Empathy. This means very, very easy connection and message handling both for the developer (a bit like a VFS), and especially for the user who then just has to select a contact. It makes a lot of sense to get this fitting into Ubuntu ahead of time, because the full rollout of that functionality deserves to be very quick and very significant. So... kudos to this thought, and good luck. I'll keep an eye on this :) Thanks, -Dylan signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss

Re: Call for testing empathy
The main goal of any instant messaging program is to allow the user to talk with friends and family around the world. Empathy, from the brief experience i've had, has that capability, as well as a multiple protocol capabilities which doesn't limit who they can talk to at all. I'm really interested in the ability to integrate well with GNOME, but more importantly the Voice/Video support. I am a college student, and I have many friends who own macs and they rave about the V/V support and how fun it is to use all the time. Having V/V to talk with family and friends from long distances is really important to me. Pidgin has evolved and has some great plugins, but the fact that Empathy has V/V support is what draws me into it. ~Brian C. Re-encoding sample content with latest theora encoders
Hi all, I hope this is the right place to discuss the example content. This is related to the video where Mr. Nelson Mandela explains meaning of Ubuntu. As good as the video content is, the video quality is I believe average at best. Theora has improved really well in last year. I think we should take advantage of the latest development in theora encoder [1] and re-encode the video from original source to produce better looking video.
