Hey Bryce,

Not at all, I'm still converting my current xorg over to fdi, maybe my notes
will be helpful. Mappings look fairly straight forward and I found a good
thread in the forums that elaborates more on the subject.

Input Device Commented Out Lacks documentation

2008-11-05 Thread Dan Colish
I think there should be a link placed in the xorg document when
update-manager comments out an input device to the new fdi documentation. It
is hard to find that page in the wiki if you're not familiar with the
details of the project. It is also frustrating to not know the proper way to
configure a system when the methods of configuration change.

Right. On Ubuntu, right click on nm-applet and choose "Edit connections".

Yes, it actually does mean "out of the box". You just have to configure it :).

Note that this list is *not* for support.

Re: Jaunty open for development

2008-11-05 Thread Jim Legget
As a very interested user of UBUNTU, I found the ability to easily network
Linux and Windows machines is absent.
I have a LAN with 9 machines consisting of a mixture of UBUNTU Linux and
Windows Vista / XP operating systems.
I have found there is too much hand editing of configuration files such as
NSSWITCH.CONF, SMB.CONF and others to make it worthwhile. I haven't found a
good 'Wizard' that is foolproof and easy to use in setting up a combined
network. There are also many programs that do very similar things.
Instructions are often lacking, for instance, in the SAMBA setup; the
reference to EVERYBODY.. is EVERYBODY allowed or is EVERYBODY blocked?
Sharing of periphials is also a problem.
The answers to questions such as these are not always easy to find.
I believe a release that focuses on these problems is due.
Which OS to use? Sorry to say, problems such as these has turned me off
until a easy solution is at hand. At that time, I will use UBUNTU as a major
OS.. It is just a plaything, a curiosity, for me now.
You folks are doing a great job. I love the system save for the networking
setup problem.

I could be wrong, but you should take a look into NetworkManager,
which now handles all such devices.

And, btw, "support" doesn't mean "support out of box". Install proper
packages and you are set.

I've heard from your lastest relese announcement that ubuntu supports 3G...

Where is the code for that? I've treid to find it on lanchpad...(however I
really faild)..

And how does ubuntu support 3G (this is probably a stupid question..)? is it
drivers ,apps etc...

And also - where is the java stack? How did you guys manage to get java
working without actualy installing properity version of java?

You are right on both counts.
Didnt even know about -c.
But the bug IIRC was about -d. cant find it again.

Other then that, forget my comment. lol

Why would you add -d and expect it to not upgrade you to a devel
release? That's exactly what -d is for:

-d, --devel-release Check if upgrading to the latest devel release
is possible

Perhaps you mean -c ?

Any idea when will update-manager be patched to handle the migration, or shall
we do it the "old fashion" way?

Also, UM must be intelligent enough to understand that the user is on the
latest stable release and want to go to the devel one, and not migrate users
from older releases to devel, when the user adds the -d. I remember following a
bug on launchpad of users complying of that, and ended up on a devel release
and not a stable one.
